EL RIAD SPRINT CARS The El Riad Shrine Sprint Car Unit is really getting anxious for spring to get here. We are patiently waiting for the weather to allow us to get our cars out of storage and fire up the engines. Our 2012 President, Dave Duncan, is preparing for another extremely productive and fun year. Our new VP, Rod Newhagen, is compiling a long list from the many towns that have invited us to parade this year. Terry Berk - ness is our 2012 Secretary. We can’t wait to get him into a car and start having some fun. The five new members from 2011 should help us get all 12 cars on the street during the 2012 parade season. The Unit had its annual Christmas party on December 17 at the Mosque. We had over fifty members, spouses and a well represented Divan. Every - one had a great time, plenty of food, drinks and fun. Our unit will be hosting the Wed - nesday night mixers during March. As the Treasurer of the Unit, I can assure www.edwardjones.com Member SIPC you we now have enough gas money to get us through the year and proudly represent El Riad Temple throughout the upper Midwest. Our Unit is looking forward to competing in Grand Forks at the 2012 Midwest Summer Session. We also look forward to the fun of the Shrine Circus coming up in late April and plan to actively participate in our Temple’s largest single fundraiser. Our Unit welcomes our new Potentate Don Jensen and will be available to assist him throughout the year. More next month on our attempt to get our ‘tires on the streets’. — Mike Olawsky El Riad Shrine Sprint Car Unit EL RIAD ORIENTAL BAND Membership The OB had a great year in 2011! We would like to commend Potenate Pat Colbert for a great year! We are all brothers, but it is with great pride that he’s also an OB member. We ended the year with a very nice Christmas Party, where a fun time was had by all! Thanks to the Clowns for bartending. Awards included: Dave Dalthrop award to Jason Strauss; Jerry May award to Todd Miller; Equip ment award to Moose Fitz - gerald; and Jamie Voight received the Jake award. We then hosted the Billion Christ - mas Party. This is a great fund raiser for the OB, and a success due to the membership. The OB had the Wednesday night bar for January. Great team efforts. OB Chili cook off winners were: 1st place; Falls Landing; 2nd place, Jim Hoy; 3rd place, Tim Wingen; 4th place, Ryan Rients. The OB Spring Fling is scheduled for April 20-21-22. It involves a bus trip to Omaha where we’ll be staying down town in the Old Market Area. It is a time to show our wives a good time and thank them for their support. Normal OB meetings will resume in February. We will be tuning up for the St. Patty’s Day Parade. We will also be honing our skills for the up-coming Spring Rumbles event. A Message from Our Imperial Potentate Greetings my fellow Nobles, I hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start! 2012 began with an exciting event —the Tournament of Roses Parade. I had the opportunity to ride on our health care system’s float, along with national patient ambassador Kate Hickman, Shriners Hospitals for Chil - dren®–Los Angeles patient Marius Woodward, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Doug Maxwell, Imperial Sirs Wayne Lachut and Raoul Frevell, and Illustrious Sirs Peter Rippenstein and Robert Secoy. You may not realize it, but waving and smiling for more than three hours can be a little tiring. During the parade, a nice surprise was seeing our other national patient ambassador, Alissa Perkins, and her family, in the crowd cheering for us. Televised on ABC, NBC, CBS and HGTV networks, the parade brought our organization a tremendous amount of exposure. Also, the Grand Marshall of the parade, J.R. Martinez, was gracious enough to participate in a 30-second PSA about Shriners Hospi - tals for Children that aired during the broadcast. Martinez is an actor who was severely burned during his tour of duty in Iraq and is also known for his performances on the television pro- gram “Dancing with the Stars.” Another event highlight was having our float win the Tournament Volun - teers’ Award. I would like to thank everyone whose hard work led to that recognition. Last month, I attended the service awards luncheon for employees at Shriners International Headquarters in Tampa, Fla. During the event, Execu - tive Vice President of Shriners Interna - tional and Past Imperial Potentate, Jack H. Jones, along with staff members Zorrie Muskovac, Janey Fisher and John Moose were given awards in recognition of their 30 years of service to our organizations. I would like to thank all of them for their hard work, dedication and loyalty to Shriners In - ter national and Shriners Hospitals for Children. My next stop was Nashville, Tenn., where Patty and I attended the Christ - mas party at the Al Menah Shrine Temple. At the party, we read Christ - mas stories to 50 patients from Shriners Hospitals for Children. The best part of the evening was seeing the expressions on each of the children’s faces when they were given a brand new bicycle, donated by a local company in Nashville. There isn’t anything more gratifying than witnessing giant smiles on children’s faces. I also had the pleasure of visiting Shriners Hospitals for Children–Green - ville, where I was given a tour by one of the patients.
