BOWLSUNDAY
Pote’s Notes
Illustrious Sir Don Jensen
It was indeed a proud, but humbling
experience, to be elected
Potentate of El Riad Temple for the
year 2012! When Helen placed the
Fez that said “Potentate” on my
head at the public installation, it
reminded me of all the men who
have served in this capacity since
1888. The Fez means helping children
while building El Riad into the
fraternal and philanthropic organization
that it is today. I can only assure
all of the Nobles that I will endeavor
to do my very best to insure that this
tradition of excellence continues. I
would like to give a special “thank
you” to Dr. Pat and Denise for their
leadership in 2011 and over the
years becoming a lifelong friend.
I believe the leadership team of
El Riad is among the best in all of
Shrine International. Your Board of
Directors is
unlike any other
temple. We as members of the
Board of Directors, have a tremendous
responsibility to manage the
business and activities of El Riad.
This is our year. Our goal this year is
more of the same. The bar has been
raised and it is our job to raise it a
little higher.
The theme for this year is:
“Unity”
An Open Heart and an
Open Mind make El Riad
who we are!
I would like give a special thankyou
to our special guests—Senior
Grand Warden Charles Gilson and
his Lady Charlie and Junior Grand
OFFICIAL CALL OF THE POTENTATE:
NOBILITY OF EL RIAD
MONTHLY
STATED MEETING
7:00 p.m. – El Riad Shrine
For the Purpose of Old and New Business
Yours in the Faith,
DON JENSEN, Potentate
Warden Doug McFarland—from the
Grand Lodge of South Dakota who
attended the Annual Meeting and
the Installation Ceremony.
I would also like to express my
thanks to the following: to Jane,
Dick and Joel from the Shrine Office
who spent many hours preparing for
the day’s activities; to the Provost
Unit for tiling the doors; to the
Snack Unit for preparing the oyster
stew and chili; to the Chanters for
singing during the installation; to
Past Potentate Bruce Wallin for
being the Installing Officer; to Past
Potentate Arlen Knutson for being
the Installing Marshal; to the
Dixieland Band for providing music
during the reception that followed
the Installation; to the Potentate’s
Aides for bartending; to Chief of
Staff Tom Johnson and Assistant
Chief of Staff Tim Bachman for
organizing the event following installation;
and to all of you who attend
the Annual Meeting and Installation
Ceremony and Reception.
I want to close with a special
thank-you to Dr. Pat Colbert and his
Lady Denise. You two have been a
shining example of what the leadership
and dedication to the Shrine is
all about. Helen and I especially
want to thank you for being our
friends—it has been a great trip only
made better because we were able
to share it with you.
DIRECTOR’S STAFF
Happy New Year to all of our fellow Nobles in the El
Riad Shrine!
The Director’s Staff Unit ended 2011 in full force and is
heading into 2012 with both barrels loaded!
During the last five weeks of 2011, we hosted the Hy-
Vee Christmas party right after Thanksgiving and introduced
our warm blooded Camel float to winter by adoring
him with lights and parading him in the Parade of Lights,
both of these were the same weekend!
We helped out with two Cold Sands Sessions before
the end of the year. In between all of that, we had time for
our Annual Christmas Party. The Director’s Staff, Parker
Flivvers, The Legion of Honor, The Highlanders and The
Hillbillies joined together for the Christmas Party. The
Chanters entertained us with their wonderful series of
Christmas and traditional music. The Rickshaws bartended
to wet our whistles. A BIG THANK-YOU to all the Units that
helped make our Christmas Party a huge success and the
ladies who did the decorating and planning.
Thanks to Merlyn Sundvold for leading us during
2011 and Bob Zwart and Mark Sundvold for leading us in
the Second Sessions of Orientation.
Our 2012 officers of the Director’s Staff are: President,
Bill Schepeler; VP, Scott Denney; Treasurer, Ken Steele;
Temple Director, Bob Sorenson; Secretary Dave Dierks.
Going into 2012 we are ready for action. Our first
event is hosting our Annual Super Bowl Party on February
party…great music, a lot of
dancing and all kinds of fun people to
party with. SAVE THE DATE for this
EL RIAD FIFE & DRUM CORPS
Happy New Year, Fife-N-Drums.
We have much to talk about but
first I would like to thank everyone for
attending our Annual Christmas Party.
A great time was had by all and we
were able to recognize two wonderful
men—Bill Butler and Walt Leyse—for
their contributions to this organization!
I would like to commend Quentin for
an outstanding year as we allow him
out of the hot seat…thanks, Q, for
keeping us all on task! Congratula -
tions as well to Harland for his new
role as Brigadier and Sergeant Major
Woody for stepping up to the line. I
look to the upcoming year to be another
fun-filled chapter in our book.
We have much to look forward to
with an OASIS and two larger than life
parties in the near future! February will
be a busy month for us and we need
all the help we can get to make it work
smoothly! Please sign up for our Wed -
nesday night bar and be sure to bring
family and friends down to make it
another success. Of course we look
forward to our 15th year with the one
and only Johnny Holmes on the 11th,
and it promises to be monumental!
Get your tickets and invite everyone
you know…they WILL NOT want to
miss this year! Following Johnny is the
St. Patty’s Day Bash and this year the
Holiday falls on Saturday so you can
While the Flivver cars slumber in
the barn and the members rest on
their laurels, we feel a thank-you is in
order to the 300 who participated in
the Football Pools. As usually happens,
all the books sold out quickly…
the odds of winning are really very
good and a person can win more than
once during the football season. Plus,
we have an extra drawing at year end.
This year the final drawing was
held at the Shrine Christmas Party
held at the Temple December 16.
There’s simply not room enough to list
all the winners of the year but we are
listing those who won more than once:
Brian Kelley, Jim Reed, Brian Mach -
muller, Doug Kettwig, and Stan
Cadwell.
Winning one weekly session plus
$50 at the year-end party were Russ
Robbers and David Murray. The big
winner with one win during the year
plus $100 at the party was Mike Hass
with Dave McCoy picking up $100
also. Congratulations to all and a big
thank-you from the Parker Flivvers.
Remember to be watching in the
fall for the announcement of the 2012
Football Books. And good luck to
everyone.
Respectfully submitted,
— Dana Schmid, Secretary
be certain the house will be full with
green revelers. I would like to thank
the party committees for working so
diligently on these events. They are a
success in large part because of you!
Last year was full of new events
and faces. I suspect that the future
holds much of the same and with
good reason. I feel that people see
what I see looking at the Fife-N-
Drum…an opportunity to be surrounded
by great people, having fun and
making a difference for those we may
never have the pleasure of meeting.
Thank you, gentlemen, for making
ours one of the finest units in Shrine -
May this year bring wonderful
things to you and your family!
At this very moment... and
the next...or the next...girls
and boys in your schools are
trying to learn while trying to
overcome bullies; to understand
friends who are considering
or succeeding in their
suicide threats, to cope with
personal depression, to negotiate
their way through the
threats and challenges of drug
and alcohol use.
WHAT IS THE MMSAP
Right now, across South Dakota,
the children in our schools are victims
of bullying, depression, suicidal idea -
tion, alcohol and drugs. Sometimes
our own child or grandchild may be a
“bully” or the target of a bully. Perhaps
your child has had a friend who committed
suicide or told her or him he
was considering it.
Increasingly our children come
from single parent families, live in
homes with one or more adults who
are already over-powered by drugs,
including alcoholism or are patients
suffering from depression. Often parents
are totally overwhelmed by their
job, economics or simply despair in
being a parent. These children lack
the stabilizing forces of a child-centered
family and the only people who
can help are the educators in our
schools. School districts and their
“home” communities in South Dakota
continue to seek help in trying to correct
these problems; help in serving
the young people who live in your
community.
The South Dakota Masonic Model
Student Assistance Program delivers a
pro-gram for educators from public
and private schools in a three-day
workshop designed to teach every
education employee in your schools
how to identify children at risk of selfdestructive
behavior and how to
develop a course of interventions
involving the parents, other educators
and the child.
What is the MMSAP?
The Masonic Model Student
Assistance Program was developed
by two specialists working in the
Pennsylvania Department of
Education. Then-Governor Dick
Thornburg directed Larry Newman
and Thomas Stecher to develop a system
to enable teachers to identify students
at risk of suicide and who were
in the early stages of using drugs or
alcohol. The program has been implemented
in South Dakota schools and
educators praise the program and the
Masons who make it possible.
Universally those who have attended
the workshops tell us that when the
“Core Team” in a school is formed and
begins work, success follows and
problems which young people are
experiencing decrease.
Plans are being made now to
present MMSAP to School
Superintendents, Administrators,
Teachers and School Counselors at
the El Riad Temple on June 11, 12, 13
and 14, 2012.
How El Riad, Masonic-Shriners
Can Help
If the Masonic Model Student
Assistance Program is to become
available to more teachers, counselors
and administrators each year, we must
in-crease our voluntary contributions.
You may give directly to the SD-
MMSAP by sending a check to the
Grand Lodge of South Dakota. You
C H A N T E R C H AT T E R
By the time you receive this issue
of the Cactus, we will be in the New
Year with goals and dreams for the
year ahead. The Chanters’ new officers
are Bill Brennan, President;
Brian Scott, Vice President; Doug
Schneider, Secretary; and John
Nordlie, Treasurer. As a side note
Gary Smith, Cactus editor, grudgingly
gave up the Secre tary job after three
years. A loud cheer went up when
Doug accepted the position.
Prez Bill Brennan is working on
what looks like summer apparel. In
other words, something other than hot,
black tuxedos, every time we have a
singing engagement! Picture this if
you can . . . a shamrock colored sport
coat with a matching color tie covered
with shamrocks! Top that off with white
slacks and green colored loafers and
you have the complete package. How -
ever, our chorus members have not
voted on Bill’s brainstorm as of yet.
The unit has selected two numbers
for future competition and also to
be added to our current repertoire.
In other news, our kitten on the
keys, Vicki Tucek, and Tom Streifel,
finally exchanged vows in Las Vegas
where they also spent their honeymoon.
The Chanters send congratulations
to a great couple.
At our recent Christmas party we
honored two outstanding Chanters.
Director Del Hubers was named
“Chanter of the Year” while Charles
Woodward was selected “Rookie of
the Year”. Congratulations, Nobles!
Now is the time to give our new
Potentate Don Jensen and his divan
our full support and help make this a
banner year for El Riad! Every year
presents new challenges and we readily
accept them. Remember, Together,
Healing That Knows No Borders
A charity finds a surgeon to help family of burned Chinese kids
By HARVEY RICE
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
GALVESTON — Four women sat in
Dr. Ted Huang’s Galveston office last
October, hoping their 18-month quest
to save a Chinese girl’s life had ended.
Min Tang was 8 years old when she
dashed into her family’s burning home
in Yunnan Province to save her 1-yearold
brother in 2008. Among other in -
juries, her burns fused her thighs to -
gether, making elimination so painful
she had nearly stopped eating.
Chinese doctors were unable to
help, so the women from HandReach,
a small Boston-based charity, set out to
find a surgeon who could operate on
Min. They finally succeeded when they
contacted the world-renowned burn
center at Shriners Hospital for Chil -
dren in Galveston, where Min and her
brother Ze have undergone surgeries that
are vastly improving their young lives.
“There was no doubt she was not
going to survive much longer,” Brecken
Swartz, HandReach executive director,
said of Min Tang.
Operating on a tiny budget,
HandReach had to find a surgeon who
would donate his services. Two organizations
turned them down, so Swartz,
her daughter and two HandReach volunteers
turned to the Galveston hospital.
Sitting in Huang’s office in the
Shriners building, the women asked
Huang to come to China and operate
on Min.
“We were four young women sitting
in his office, very desperate,”
Swartz recalled. “Our hearts were beating
fast, and we were on pins and
needles.”
His reply—“I’m sorry, I’m not
going to China”—nearly brought
Swartz to tears. After a pause he said,
(Continued from page 15)
HandReach volunteer Qui Mc Intosh phoned the children’s
father, Yue Yun Tang, 31, in China. His hopes dashed
so many times before, Tang was skeptical, but he was willing
to try anything.
The day his children were burned, Tang had argued
with his wife about payment for two women he had hired to
help in his vegetable farm in the village of Shin Je. Tang,
interviewed this week in Galveston, said he left his wife
in the bedroom while he sat down to eat lunch Min
had prepared.
Saving brother, child
His distraught wife poured gasoline on herself
and the bed, Tang said. He turned to see his wife on
fire.
“I don’t want to live,” she shouted, according to
Tang. Flames engulfed the house within seconds.
He grabbed Min and his other son, Shen, then 4,
and ran outside. His wife had run out of the house, and he
was trying to smother her flaming clothes when he heard
Min shout, “Help me father, help me!”
Min had run back into the house and thrown herself
over Ze to shield him from the flames.
“I thought of nothing in my mind, just my brother,”
Min said. “I needed to get in to my brother.”
As neighbors formed a bucket brigade, Tang covered up
in a wet blanket and ran into the house. Emerging from the
flames, Tang handed Ze to a neighbor, and they ran toward
the nearest hospital seven miles away, running nearly half -
way there before catching a ride.
Chinese doctors saved the children’s lives but could not
or would not do the necessary surgeries. Tang’s wife suffered
burns on her arms and legs and spent three years in
prison before returning to the family.
In a country where the average annual income is
$2,786, the Tang family relied on relatives and charity to pay
for the medical care. China has no government program to
finance medical care for injured children.
McIntosh said she learned about Min’s plight through a
Chinese Internet bulletin board and contacted Tang 18
months ago. That helped launch a search that ended with
Huang.
‘I feel so happy’
A doubtful Tang and his children, accompanied by two
Chinese doctors whom Huang had agreed to train, arrived
in Galveston in May. Donations paid for their trip.
Tang shed his doubts after the first operation. “In the
beginning I didn’t have a big hope, just a little hope,” Tang
said. “But right now I feel so happy because the improvement
is so obvious.”
After a dozen surgeries, Min, now 11, is eating
heartily. Her brother, now 4, who hadn’t learned to walk
before losing his legs to the fire, is walking for the first
time in his life with the aid of prosthetic legs. Min will
be fitted with prosthetics to replace her lower legs,
Huang said, and will be walking before she returns
to China.
The children will need numerous operations to
loosen the scar tissue as they grow, and the prosthetics
will need replacement a dozen times. Huang
said he will be keeping tabs on the children and will
advise Chinese doctors if need be.
Swartz said HandReach is opening a prosthetics
unit in Beijing that will care for the Tang children.
The unit will be connected electronically to the
Shriners Hospital for Chil dren in Springfield, Mass.,
which specializes in rehabilitation.
Patient’s Mom Thanks
Shrine for Assistance
Noble Roger Risty received the following letter from the
mother of a young Shriners Hospital patient in Sioux Falls.
December 15, 2011
Dear members of the Womens General Auxiliary,
Shriners Hospitals for Children–Twin Cities, El Riad
Shriners, and Rehabilitation Designs, Inc.,
I’ve been reflecting on how to even begin to thank you
for helping our family. We are so deeply grateful for your
generosity! You’ve given our little boy something invaluable
⎯ a gift of mobility, which will provide him new opportunities
to shine.
You know, I read a story some time ago and there’s
more to it, but the part that sticks with me goes something
like this…
Santa placed a candle on the mantle and lit it. The soft
glow from its one tiny flame brightened the room. Santa
said, “The glow of the candle represents how people can
show their thanks for the gift of that Christmas Eve long
ago. Teach the children to go about doing good, and to let
their light shine so that all may see it. This is what is symbolized
when the twinkling lights shine on the tree like
hundreds of bright, shining candles, each of them representing
one of God’s precious children, their light shining
for all to see.” (author unknown)
Our precious Conner, is our bright star! He’s got a
sparkling personality and his smile lights up the room. His
giggles make everyone around him giggle too! Conner’s
been an example of character to us and his pure determination
has taught us to be thankful for so many things. Quite
honestly, things we probably took for granted all too often
before he came around.
As I look around and see colored lights on trees, twinkling
lights on houses, bright stars in the sky, I think of children
⎯ how you’ve helped my child, and the many other
children you’ve helped. My eyes have grown teary now, and
I am speechless. And, I am grateful.
In this season and beyond, our prayers are with you,
and the many other children you help. May all their lights
shine!
is really getting anxious for spring to
get here. We are patiently waiting for
the weather to allow us to get our cars
out of storage and fire up the engines.
Our 2012 President, Dave Duncan, is
preparing for another extremely productive
and fun year. Our new VP, Rod
Newhagen, is compiling a long list
from the many towns that have invited
us to parade this year. Terry Berk -
car and start having some fun. The
five new members from 2011 should
help us get all 12 cars on the street
during the 2012 parade season.
The Unit had its annual Christmas
party on December 17 at the Mosque.
We had over fifty members, spouses
and a well represented Divan. Every -
one had a great time, plenty of food,
drinks and fun.
Our unit will be hosting the Wed -
the Treasurer of the Unit, I can assure
you we now have enough gas money
to get us through the year and proudly
represent El Riad Temple throughout
the upper Midwest. Our Unit is looking
forward to competing in Grand Forks
at the 2012 Midwest Summer Session.
We also look forward to the fun of the
Shrine Circus coming up in late April
and plan to actively participate in our
Temple’s largest single fundraiser. Our
Unit welcomes our new Potentate Don
The OB had a great year in 2011!
We would like to commend Potenate
Pat Colbert for a great year! We are
all brothers, but it is with great pride
that he’s also an OB member.
We ended the year with a very
nice Christmas Party, where a fun time
was had by all! Thanks to the Clowns
for bartending. Awards included: Dave
Dalthrop award to Jason Strauss;
Jerry May award to Todd Miller;
Equip ment award to Moose Fitz -
gerald; and Jamie Voight received
the Jake award.
We then hosted the Billion Christ -
mas Party. This is a great fund raiser
for the OB, and a success due to the
membership.
The OB had the Wednesday night
bar for January. Great team efforts. OB
Chili cook off winners were: 1st place;
Falls Landing; 2nd place, Jim Hoy;
3rd place, Tim Wingen; 4th place,
Ryan Rients.
The OB Spring Fling is scheduled
for April 20-21-22. It involves a bus trip
to Omaha where we’ll be staying
down town in the Old Market Area. It is
a time to show our wives a good time
and thank them for their support.
Normal OB meetings will resume
in February. We will be tuning up for
the St. Patty’s Day Parade. We will also
be honing our skills for the up-coming
Spring Rumbles event. Until then!
A Message from Our Imperial Potentate
Greetings my fellow Nobles,
I hope everyone’s new year is off to
a great start!
2012 began with an exciting event
—the Tournament of Roses Parade. I
had the opportunity to ride on our
health care system’s float, along with
national patient ambassador Kate
Hickman, Shriners Hospitals for Chil -
dren®–Los Angeles patient Marius
Woodward, Chairman of the Board of
Trustees Doug Maxwell, Imperial Sirs
Wayne Lachut and Raoul Frevell, and
Illustrious Sirs Peter Rippenstein and
Robert Secoy. You may not realize it,
but waving and smiling for more than
three hours can be a little tiring. For -
tunately, the spectators’ admiration
and passion for our hospitals made it a
lot easier for me. During the parade, a
nice surprise was seeing our other
national patient ambassador, Alissa
Perkins, and her family, in the crowd
cheering for us.
Televised on ABC, NBC, CBS and
HGTV networks, the parade brought
our organization a tremendous
amount of exposure. Also, the Grand
Marshall of the parade, J.R. Martinez,
was gracious enough to participate in a
30-second PSA about Shriners Hospi -
tals for Children that aired during the
broadcast. Martinez is an actor who
was severely burned during his tour of
duty in Iraq and is also known for his
performances on the television pro-
gram “Dancing with the Stars.”
Another event highlight was having
our float win the Tournament Volun -
teers’ Award. I would like to thank
everyone whose hard work led to that
recognition.
Last month, I attended the service
awards luncheon for employees at
Shriners International Headquarters in
Tampa, Fla. During the event, Execu -
tive Vice President of Shriners Interna -
tional and Past Imperial Potentate, Jack
H. Jones, along with staff members
Zorrie Muskovac, Janey Fisher and
John Moose were given awards in
recognition of their 30 years of service
to our organizations. I would like to
thank all of them for their hard work,
dedication and loyalty to Shriners In -
ter national and Shriners Hospitals for
Children.
My next stop was Nashville, Tenn.,
where Patty and I attended the Christ -
mas party at the Al Menah Shrine
Temple. At the party, we read Christ -
mas stories to 50 patients from
Shriners Hospitals for Children. The
best part of the evening was seeing the
expressions on each of the children’s
faces when they were given a brand
new bicycle, donated by a local company
in Nashville. There isn’t anything
more gratifying than witnessing giant
smiles on children’s faces.
I also had the pleasure of visiting
Shriners Hospitals for Children–Green -
ville, where I was given a tour by one of
the patients. It was my first time there;
I was able to see the new prosthetics
room and the cutting-edge services
Trip Reports: Chief Rabban Don Jensen reported on
the Membership Seminar in Tampa, FL, and Potentate
Colbert reminded everyone that there is still some room left
for the Dec. 9 bus trip to the TCU.
Other Business:
Potentate Colbert reminded all present to submit
Shriner of the Year nomination apps. New Associate Mem -
ber Gary Greenleaf told a fairly humorous joke. Potentate
Colbert recognized Noble Rick Reyes, a member of AL
ZAFAR in San Antonio, TX, now living in the area and interested
in Associating with EL RIAD. Noble Reyes then told
the best joke of the night.
There being no further business to come before the
body, the Potentate thanked the Provost for tiling the
doors. A Motion was made and seconded to adjourn the
meeting at 8:15 p.m. It was approved.
CLASSIE AUTOS
Hello all, the Classie Autos has been very busy since
the last Cactus. We have had a couple meetings, a
Christmas party, installation of new officers, and lots of
planning for our up coming party. The officers that have
been chosen are: President, Josh Mannhelter; Vice
President, George Zahn; Secretary, Heath Lacey; and
Treasurer, Howard Greer. With a line-up like this we are
bound to have a good year.
We had a great Christmas party in December down at
the Shrine. Brunch style with very good food and fellowship
as always. Josh and his lady did it again. Good ol’
Dale Kiebach won the “spark plug” award, for all his hard
work putting together the monthly cruises this year. Dale
and his wife both deserve a pat on the back for what they
have done for the unit.
As we write this article we are planning our Hobo Stew
event for January 22 at the Shrine. How this works is
everyone must bring two cans of vegetables, one for the
stew and one for the food bank. Every year the stew is different
but it always tastes great.
We are also very exited to announce that we have the
“RUDE” band locked down to give us another awesome
night when we host “Kool Summer Nights”. The date for
that event is set for May 12. Get your tickets early, these
guys have a great show lined up for us.
Membership Recruiting
- Using proven and tested tools -
All of us at one time or another have been asked by someone out side of the fraternity –
“What are Shrine/Masons?” or “How do I join?” Even though most of us can answer
this question, do your responses create a desire for this ‘prospective member’ to join and
do you deliver the same message each time? A single point of reference has been
created to answer all of the inquirers questions and it will deliver a proven and tested
message as well as answer a lot of questions that they may not know that they have. If
you have not yet explored www.beashrinernow.com , I encourage you to do so. You
may ask “why send a prospective Masonic candidate to a ‘Shrine’ website,” – so let me
tell you. Shriners International has spent a lot of time developing a fantastic resource to
assist in membership recruitment. This
means the Lodges will also reap the
benefits of this membership push and
we should be doing all that we can as
Shrine/Masons to promote this activity.
When a prospective candidate views the
website they can view 5 short online
videos that explain who and what
Shrine/Masons are as well as how to
join. The ‘Roadmap’ tab goes into
extensive detail about all of the steps
necessary to join a Lodge and a Temple.
If a candidate has any questions after
exploring the site they still have an
avenue to explore. A candidate can
request to speak with a Virtual Mentor
to continue their Masonic education.
Once they register they will receive by
e-mail a letter from the Imperial
Potentate talking about Freemasons and
Shriners.
Just who are these Virtual Mentors you ask? Based on the candidate’s home zip code,
they are your fellow Lodge and Shrine brothers that have signed up to help educate, guide
and assist candidates – not some nameless person outside of the area. Additionally, if a
prospective candidate requests to speak with a Mentor their contact information is saved
in the membership system enabling us to keep track of possible future members and
invite them to Rush Parties and other Masonic and Shrine events. Please encourage your
prospective candidates to explore www.beashrinernow.com and have them request to
speak with a Mentor. Also, if you are interested in becoming a Virtual Mentor please
contact Reid Jensen at email@reidjensen.com for additional information.
had an enjoyable lunch with some of
to learn more about these wonderful
I then headed to Spartanburg, S.C.,
to watch the Shrine Bowl of the Car o -
game, it is a definite must! The event is
the biggest of the high school Shrine
bowl games and had a packed stadium
of close to 14,000 people in attendance.
It was a great game; the North
Your Editor’s
Grumblings
by Gary Smith
Well, it’s finally happened.
Former Cactus
editor, current contributor
and artist, Terry Roisum,
has been after me for
some time to write a
monthly column. Now he’s gone to all
the work of creating a caricature of me
to use with the column—added guilt.
How can I not do something?
Terry is a great artist who has created
drawings for anyone who asks. I
know for a fact that he’s still owed a
bottle or two for previously commissioned
pieces. Let’s hope he collects
because he’s a hoot when connected
to a vessel containing spirits.
There is, of course, always something
to write about when it comes to
El Riad. First and foremost is our
recent annual meeting and installation
of officers for the new year. What a
great turn-out for the public installation
ceremony. Hundreds were on hand to
support our new Potentate, Don
The ac -
complishments
that took place
during Pat’s
year at the helm—literally at the
helm—are many, and there is not room
here to list them all. But we all know he
worked overtime to make sure El Riad
remained the finest temple in all of
Shrinedom. Thank you, Pat and
Denise, for your
many sacrifices in
2012.
As for Pote Don,
we don’t have to
worry. He’s been
involved as anyone
the past few years
and lives, eats and
will remain at the top of the heap when
it comes to Shrine Temples.
But there’s a caveat. We all need
to support this leadership in every way
possible. We should question and we
should contribute—and together we
will always succeed.
quite right (haven’t combed what’s left
he does have me in my slippers, feet
hand. Man, it doesn’t get any better
Boy’s Dream of Playing Violin Comes True
When Luis Fernando Robles-Aria
was 3 years old, it was impossible for his
parents to imagine him playing the violin.
Born without a right forearm and
hand, Luis could not hold the handle
bars on a tricycle with both hands,
much less guide a violin bow.
The prosthetic device Shriners Hospitals
for Children designed for Luis Fernando
Robles-Aria, 12, makes it possible for
him to play the violin.
Life changed for Luis when a social
worker referred him to Shriners Hospi -
tals for Children®–Northern Califor nia,
where Luis was introduced to the highly
specialized, life-changing care he needed
to pursue his dreams.
“The help that Luis receives is a
blessing for all of us. We thank you for
taking care of all the children that need
it,” says Luis’s mother , Maria Del Car -
men Arias Torres. “The experience with
Shriners Hospital has been very pleasant.
We feel welcome, we have received
the necessary help and they always
greet us with a smile,” she adds.
Thanks to the support of the volunteer
Shriner-drivers in Reno, Luis and
his parents have been able to make all of
his medical appointments even though
the hospital is a long drive from his
home in northern Nevada.
During his first visit to the Shriners
Hos pital in Sacramento, Michelle James,
M.D., chief of orthopaedics, ex amined
Luis and told him he could be fitted for
a prosthetic arm to help him participate
in activities that require two hands.
“Children born with one hand don’t
need a prosthesis for daily activities.
They develop normally, and do nearly
everything that children with two hands
can do — surprising their parents and
teachers,” said Dr. James.
“However, when they get a little
older and want to do specialized activities,
like playing musical instruments or
some sports, a custom-designed prosthesis
can make this possible. Our limbdeficiency
team, which includes expert
prosthetists, orthotists and oc cu -
pational therapists, loves helping kids
figure out how to do activities that are
important to them,” Dr. James adds.
When Luis told Dan Munoz, manager
of orthotics & prosthetics at the
hospital, he wanted to ride a bike, the
team at the hospital designed a device
that allows Luis to grip both handlebars.
Luis, now 12 years old, loves music
and has always enjoyed singing. His
dream of playing the violin came true
when he was fitted with a prosthetic
arm and adaptive device which allows
him to hold the violin bow. Luis began
taking music lessons in the fall of 2010.
He practices at home, where his dog
Marley loves to watch and listen to
Louis play. Luis hopes to play the violin
in his middle-school band.
Like other boys his age, Luis enjoys
computer games and playing Wii with
his brother Alex. With Social Studies
and English his two favorite subjects,
the seventh-grader has his sights set on
the future.
“I’m going to be a lawyer to help the
needy,” says Luis.
