Commodore’s Report
Greetings, fellow PCYC members,
As I write this, it is August, and we just completed our annual cruise to Catalina. Everyone
that participated had a very good time. We also saw first hand how club members look out
for each other. One of our boats ran over a polypropylene rope floating just under the
surface, and it fouled both its propellers. Jim and Marge Curley’s GaelForce II stood by it,
and waited several hours until Vessel Assist arrived at the scene. Lady D was then given a
side tie to Libertad for the duration of our stay on Avalon, and had an escort all the way home at the end of the
cruise. PCYC boaters take care of each other! This in turn makes it possible to plan ambitious cruises, like our
upcoming Cruise around Santa Cruz island.
We also just completed our 35 th McNish Classic. It was a grand event, and our club was graced by the presence of
27 classic wooden sail yachts, that raced under ideal conditions in our waters. Of course, all of the activities of this
event were hosted by our club and our members. We provided the support fleet to set the buoys, provided the
starting line boat, the photo boats and we even had an airplane follow and photograph the race. Our clubhouse
hosted all of the “on shore” activities. Dennis Conner took first place and our own “Cheerio” placed 2nd within its
class, and 13 th overall . Mr. Conner was very gracious and wrote us a thank you note for a job well done.
Our fishermen had two top shelf events recently. It started late June with their Grand Slam, consisting of catching
a Halibut, a White Sea Bass, and a Calico Bass, all on the same day. In July they had our traditional Mako
tournament. Both events were well attended, and the fishing group is having a very successful season.
If you own a sea going boat, there is no better way to use it than to participate in club-organized events. We have
first-rate cruising, fishing and sailing programs.
PCYC is the proud sponsor of Pacific Corinthian Youth foundation. They are now in full swing with their sailing
classes and youth activities. They recently had a fundraiser at the Club and I hope you were able to attend.
Your club is working very well, and all segments of our membership have been participating and enjoying the
activities of their choice.
It is all good news, and it is all because you care, you contribute, you participate.
A Message from your Membership Chair,
S/C Martha Jean Geisler:
Come to our Open Houses!
Two in September (9th & 30th), lots of opportunity to bring in your neighbors
& friends to enjoy our fun, food and friendship! If that's not convenient, call me
Vice Commodore’s Report
The House Committee has been busy trying to finish up all our projects. Don Dusette will be
putting the finishing touches on the dock renovation. His committee has been waiting for the
PCYF classes to finish so the rubber dock edging can be installed. Our GM Brenda Dickmann is
looking forward to having the security and computer servers moved to the communications room.
She will finally have the room she needs to conduct business meetings in her office. Once the
equipment is removed there will be some redecorating needed.
The final menus were approved thanks to all the hard work done by Quartermaster Graham Wilson and Brenda. The
committee will be selecting new covers for the menus. Be sure to notice the new wine lists available downstairs. Many
other projects are in various stages of completion and if you have any time please come join us for a House Committee
Meeting and see all the agenda items we have addressed. We meet on the 2 nd Thursday of each month at 5:00 P.M.
Volunteers are needed!
The Membership Committee would like to thank all the PCYC members who have been handing out invitation cards to
Friday Night Icebreakers. We will be including some additional cards in your monthly statements in case you need
some more. We will be conducting two Open Houses in September, so please tell your neighbors and friends to stop by
and take a look at all we have to offer. The committee will be finalizing some plans to take more advantage of our
waterside location. We hope to add additional value to a PCYC membership. We are looking forward to showcasing our
plans in the months to come.
Save October 11th for Ladies Who Do Lunch!
Traditionally, the October Ladies Luncheon is a cancer awareness fundraiser. We take time to
remember those we’ve lost and celebrate our friends who fight the battle. This year the luncheon
will be held on Thursday, October 11 th in the main dining room. Come early to taste-test wines,
olive oils, and other munchies that you will be able purchase.
We are pleased to announce that the proceeds from this year’s luncheon will be donated to
PleaseHearUs.org. This local organization provides both financial assistance and support for
cancer patients in Ventura County. They help cancer patients meet the challenging needs of
treatments; costs can be overwhelming. Perhaps you have visited their “Cancer Care Thrift Center” at 3761 W Hemlock
Street – just 5 minutes from the club. Your donations of nearly-new items are always appreciated. You can read more
about this charity online at www.PleaseHearUs.org.
It’s not too early to put together a table of friends for this most important luncheon. We’d love to put together a sell-out
crowd so make your plans today to join us. You can make your reservations at the front desk or call 985-PCYC.
Thanks for your support,
In General
Did you know that we have docked on your very own PCYC Dock, Sélavy, a Capri 26? She is
available for use by all club members. There is no charge, and she is available on a first come -
first served basis. (Sélavy: 1990 Year built, year model 1991 Length 26 feet.) What you will need
to do first is to call our very own PCYC member and volunteer Doug Russell. Doug will
familiarize you with how Sélavy sails and all about her rigging. To contact Mr. Russell, please
refer to your PCYC Roster or call the front desk.
Once you are checked out and ready to set sail into the beautiful seas of Channel Islands Harbor, you will need to call
the Front Desk, reserve your time, come and complete a form and pick up your key!
Quite a few years back one of our previous members
wrote this very simple glossary of nautical terms, and
believe me, they are very, very helpful.
Bow…The pointy end of the boat.
Stern…The blunt end of the boat
Mast…Tall vertical pole
Boom…Shorter horizontal pole
Forestay…Wire holding up the mast
Backstay…Another wire holding up the mast
Shrouds…More wires holding up the mast
Jib…Sail up front
Main…Sail in back
Tiller…Steering stick
Helmsman…Guy who runs the steering stick
Helmswoman…Lady who runs the steering stick
Sheets…Ropes that control the sails
Crew…Guy who pulls the sheet (sheerer)
Thanks, Rosemary!
Above all, please come and enjoy all the wonderful
amenities that your club has to offer. Come to lunch or
dinner via your boat, just call the Front Desk and verify
that the PCYC Dock is available for you. Come and
enjoy the swimming pool which is heated to a
delightful 85 degrees. Relax in the sun with family and
friends.
Our lines are always open, Wednesday through Sunday,
for your event reservations. Please take note that when booking reservations for persons other than yourself, we greatly
appreciate a member number and food choice. Also, in order to make the event as enjoyable as possible, we recommend
special orders be made at least a week in advance. For clarity and communication purposes, it is best to remember who
took your reservations...
The Club Sail Boat, Sélavy, is free for members to use, and there are a lot more members sailing this great boat. All
you need to do to check out the boat is have basic boating and sailing skills and be checked out by a designated club
member. Give the front Desk a call for an appointment. This is a member maintained boat. Our members have been
donating equipment and their time keeping the boat and motor in ship shape condition. When you call to reserve the
boat, check to see if the boat has been used lately; if not, you may want to put aside enough time clean the boat before
use. If all the members just follow a few simple steps before and after use, everyone should enjoy their sail.
When you get to the boat:
Check the fuel level. Outboards tend to burn a lot of gas. You may motor more than you expect if the wind
turns light. A quarter of a tank should be enough gas for most trips in and out of the marina. If you are 5 miles
out, you’ll need more.
Check to see if all safety equipment and registration is aboard and in-date.
1- Fire Extinguisher
1- Horn
1- VHF Radio (mounted next to
power panel)
4- Life Jackets. If you need more
bring your own. Remember, all
children 12 and under must wear a
proper size Life Jacket all the time.
3-Flairs, in-date.
1- Anchor in Chain Locker on
bow.
Turn on main battery switch
under the steps.
Turn on VHF Radio and set to
channel 16.
Start the motor before setting up
the boat for sailing. If it doesn’t
start you may need to go to plan B
and do a Harbor sail.
Check the condition of the boat; if there is something wrong let the Front Desk know.
When you return to the dock, leave the boat in the condition that you would like to find it:
Check the fuel level. If it is less than a quarter of a tank, please fill the tank.
Replace all covers.
Coil all lines and hang them from the boom or wrap them around the winches.
Stow wench handle in cabin.
Turn OFF main battery switch.
Rinse off boat.
When you return the key, let the Front Desk know if something is wrong with the boat.

Come Cruise With Us!
Labor Day Cruise: Our Labor Day Cruise, starting August 30 – September 3, around Santa
Cruz Island will happen after I submit this article, so you will have to “tune-in” next month to
find out how much fun we had. In the meantime, let me fill you in on our July Catalina Cruise.
Follow-up on Catalina Cruise: We had a great turnout, with the following boats joining us at
either Cat Harbor or Avalon or both. Our PCYC Cruisers: Jim and Marge Curley’s on
GaelForce II, Bob Fortner and Kathy Raduenz on Piece of Mine -with their crew of Al and
Karen Lorenzen , Jim and Dee Canaday on Lady D, Don Johnson and Dixie Redden on Margaritaville, Jim Jones
and family on Carrie Jay II, Jim Milles and friends on Bad Habit, Jack Schuler and Rose Helms with family on
Esmeralda, Graham and June Wilson on Bella Vita, Henry and Shirley Goldman with family on Lady Sadie II, Rich
and Candace Reynolds on Serenity, and of course the Citeras with guests Tom and Alice Kearney on Libertad. If I
missed anyone, my apologies! Our first stop was Cat Harbor, and that night, we kicked off the cruise with a Cocktail
party aboard the Citera’s Libertad, followed by a group dinner at Doug’s Harbor Reef Restaurant. The next night we
really partied hearty (some of us A LOT MORE than others) with a “Cheese Burgers in Paradise” aboard the
Curley’s boat, GaelForce II. Marge and Jim Curley went all out by decorating the boat with theme Palm Trees,
followed by delicious cheeseburgers from Chef Marge. On Sunday, most of us moved on to Avalon while a few
stayed behind in Cat Harbor. The Canadays had a misfortune, in that their prop picked some “stealth” poly rope and
had to get towed in to Avalon. Thankfully, the Curleys came up behind and stayed with them until the Tow Boat
came (some 4 hours later). Our hats are off to Jim and Marge for being the buddy boat for Lady D! Sunday night we
celebrated getting into Avalon aboard the Fortner/Raduenz boat, Piece of Mine. By Monday, the Canadays had
recovered from their ordeal well enough to host dinner for everyone with a “Taco Bar” aboard the Lady D. The next
night we all gathered aboard the Goldman’s boat, Lady Sadie II, where we had another fantastic time. Wednesday
was our annual Miniature Golf Tournament, followed by lunch at Mi Casita. Thursday we all met for cocktails at the
Descanso Beach Bar and Grill, and followed by another group dinner at Antonio’s. By Friday, many of us were
“partied out” and departed for homeport. A few of us lingered on, enjoying the perfect weather in Avalon.
“Back to Cat Cruise”: Our next adventure will be our “Back to Catalina” Cruise, on Sept 28 through Oct 7.
The signup sheet should be posted the first week in September, so look for it. If you have any questions or need
more information, please text or call me at 661-373-6887, or email kym@citera.org .
Looking forward to cruising with you…
Fame Sweeps the Fleet in 35 th Annual McNish
Classic Yacht Race
Dennis Conner takes best overall and in class in his 102-year old boat
By Catherine French, McNish Race Committee and
Gene Beville, Fleet Captain Sail, Race Committee Chair
Channel Islands Harbor – Saturday, July 28, 2012 marked the 35 th annual
running of the McNish Classic Yacht Race, sponsored by Pacific Corinthian
Yacht Club.
This specially designed race was created in 1977 by PCYC member Dick McNish and his friend Jim Crandall to allow
wooden yachts to compete.
What a difference a year made for Dick McNish as he just splashed his 1931 46-foot yawl Cheerio II in late May after
having suffered a broken main mast during last year’s classic causing him to abandon the race. This year, he finished
second in his class—Yawls.
“It was so great to do so well in the race after having to abandon last year’s race. It took awhile to get the new mast built
and stepped, but Cheerio II is back and ready for more racing and cruising,” said McNish.
Twenty-seven classic wooden yachts from all over southern California competed in this year’s Classic. The racers
enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of sailing with gentle seas and steady 10-14 knot northwesterly breezes. Because the
wind was fairly constant during the race, the pursuit start format worked as it should and the competition was very
exciting with all the boats finishing within an hour with most finishing within half an hour of the first to cross the line.
The pursuit start format allows slower boats to start first and includes a windward leg, two reaching legs and a
downwind finish.
Every year skippers compete for the coveted Strathmore Cup – and to win their weight in Champagne. Making his 5 th
appearance in this 17-mile triangular course race designed for wooden yachts, veteran America’s Cup skipper Dennis
Conner of San Diego YC handily finished first overall taking the cup and the Champagne and first in Schooners Class
ahead of the 1926 built La Volpe sailed by Jim O’Brian who finished second (and won the Bristol boat award). At the
helm of his beautiful102-year old 40-foot topsail gaff-rigged Long Island Sound schooner Fame, Conner finished nearly
ten minutes ahead of the second place overall H-28 ketch, Splinter, skippered by Dan Shepley, Jr., who also placed first
in the ketch class. Bryan Chamberlain took third on Rose of Sharon.
“It’s great to have Dennis here again this year in his beautiful boat Fame. He’s a great sailor and tough competitor,”
McNish said.
The Golden Dolphin trophy for lowest elapsed time went to the 50’ yawl Circe, skippered by M&C Bohanan who
finished the course in 2:19:32, averaging 7.3 knots, also taking first place in the Yawl class.
In Ketches Class, first place went to Dan Shepley on Splinter, team Dorty and Jensen took second on Patience and
Spitfire took third place with Jeffrey Woods at the helm.
Ladies Who Do Lunch Wrap Up
It was a beautiful day in the harbor as the Ladies of PCYC and their guests gathered for the August
Luncheon.
Our hosts for this luncheon, Mary Kersting and Julia McQuillan, welcomed everyone to a room
decorated in sea colors, shells and lighthouses. We feasted on Shrimp Louie salads and Chicken
Teriyaki Bowls while sipping some exotic drinks fashioned by our Bar Manager, Courtney.
The windows overlooking the harbor were the backdrop for the beautiful baskets that were either donated by members
or put together by the LWDL committee from members’ donated items. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of
you for your donations of baskets, or other items to create these baskets. Your generosity has made it possible for the
LWDL committee to raise monies for those unfunded items for the Club….thank you so much!
Our own member, Catherine French, wowed the audience with a presentation of the video ‘Treasure in the Sea’ narrated
by Ventura County’s own Kevin Costner. The video was a beautifully filmed portrayal of what is truly a treasure in our
midst, the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. Catherine has been a volunteer for the Park for over 11
years. She gave us an introduction to the video and answered the many questions we had about the Park after the video.
We thoroughly enjoyed hearing her stories of tours and adventures while serving as volunteer. Many of us were not
aware of the many opportunities to explore the Channel Islands that are available to us. We extend our thanks to
Catherine for a fun and very informative presentation. In a special drawing, two very lucky people won Island tours
donated by Island Packers.
We are now looking forward to our next luncheon in October. This luncheon is the one time that the proceeds are
donated to charity. This year the charity is Please Hear Us. Org. This organization is dedicated to providing financial
assistance to help pay for Ventura County cancer patients’ treatments and medications. Judi Roussey and Roxy Gross
are our hosts for this luncheon. Please give them or me a call if you would like to help with this luncheon.
Dinghy Dine Around
(It’s really lunch.)
11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2012
In Sloops/Cutters A Walter Russakoff, who has sailed his yacht Vignette in every race for the past 35 years, won
first place, with Antares coming in second with Steven Guilford at the helm, and third place was taken by Tom
Zetlmaier on Spartan.
Sloops/Cutters B had Savannah taking first by Bill Proctor and crew, followed by John Duff aboard Raiatea,
Bequia took third place with Lopez at the helm. And in XX Class (new this year for cold molded boats) was Silvan
in first sailed by Dan Israel, and Senior Advantage placed second with John Thawley at the helm.
The good breeze made for a flashy finish with yachts finishing in close together with their colorful array of chutes
billowing in the afternoon breeze just outside the detached breakwater at Channel Islands Harbor. The competitors
and the many spectators reported having a wonderful day, fitting for such a glorious celebration of yachting
tradition, and enjoying every aspect of the event and they packed the PCYC clubhouse after the race to watch Dick
McNish award the trophies.
PCYC member Scott Harrison was the Race Coordinator with Gene Beville, S/C Martha Jean Geisler and
Hi Brenda,
I've been meaning to send off a thank you for hosting the Santa Barbara Sail and Power Squadron
over the July 7 weekend. We all had a great time and especially enjoyed the dinner - it was delicious.
We've been doing this for some 27 years now and we were very pleased with the accommodations,
support, and service.
Thanks so much,
