Most people today take electricity and the
infrastructure to deliver it for granted.
But it takes a lot of technical know-how to
get electricity to where you need it.

knows thE bEst, safEst and most EfficiEnt
businEssEs and production facilitiEs.
The evaluation of cable vs. overhead line
transmission systems requires a comprehensive
study of technical, economical and
environmental aspects. Whereas in some
cases overhead lines are chosen as the most
cost-effective way of transmitting electricity,
cable solutions have to be taken into consideration
in cases of lack of aboveground space
or if the local topography does not allow for
overhead lines.
If a customer’s power distribution project cannot
be achieved through aboveground cables,
it may be addressed through underground
cables. Pöyry is one of the few consulting firms
For governments wishing to incorporate more
energy from renewable sources, such as wind
power, into their existing power grids, these
grids must become ‘smarter’.
Pöyry supports the development and
implementation of smart grids today.
Smart grid technology offers enormous
potential for electrical transmission and
distribution operators, as well as other companies,
to respond to flexible demand in their
networks. Smart grids have the capability to
work together with, or independent from, large
conventional generators.
Pöyry can also provide assistance in forecasting
and mitigating the impact of peak
demands in cases where consumers simultaneously
react to time-variable price signals,
especially with regard to the expected boom
of electric vehicles. Dealing with increasingly
complex planning and operation of networks
in a ‘smart’ world, with load-flow inversion and
more dynamic demand, presents unique challenges
that we can address.
Pöyry offers support in the modeling, development
and implementation of new technologies
and market mechanisms. Our main focuses in
designing future power systems include:
• Quantitative modeling of future energy
markets
• Evaluating the impact of intermittency on
TSos and dSos
• design of demand side management
• Engineering technology solutions for Smart
