BRIEF INFORMATION ON NUMBERED GENERALS FROM PREVIOUS PAGE AND THEIR EXPEDITIONS
The ranks of those marked with asterisk were the ones they finally reached in their life. The ranks of unmarked generals were the ones
that they had during their several military campaigns against the Chin/Zo people from 1842 to 1895 and once again during the Haka and
Thado-Kuki Rebellions(1917-19). The author is still enquiring about the final ranks that those unmarked personalities had attained in their
life - and their biographies as well.
It was a milestone in their military careers to have taken part in any of the said expeditions, because these expedtions were ranked
among major expeditions of British forces around the world(Appendices U-1 & U-2). They took great pride in being a part of these expedi-
tions and these therefore are always mentioned in their biographies(see Appendices O & Y). Several of them got promoted and bestowed
with outstanding awards for their performance during these expeditions. For instance, Lt. General Sir Phyre and Maj.-General Fytche
were Captain and Lieutenant respectively when they led the first punitive expedition against the Chins back in 1842.(See text and Appendix
O for the roles and ranks of the generals listed above during the various expeditions.)
In addition to the 229 recipients of the Indian General Service Medal from the two battalions during the Chin-Lushai Expedition of 1889-90
and the Chin Hills Expedition of 1892-93(Appendix U-3), and the distinguished awards conferred to armed force personnel of the Assam
Rifles and Burma Military Police during the Haka, and Thado-Rebellions of 1917-19(Appendix W), a list of recipients of similar awards
by other military units are to be seen in Appendix Y. The author is still collecting information on other recipients of similar awards from
other units. ( http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/british_regiment/norfolk_regiment.htm )
INDIA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1854 95
“... The remaining clasps were issued for services during expeditions to nearby countries — Persia, Malaya and Burma... In
addition, most of the expeditions were undertaken in very difficult terrain against determined and often fanatical resistance
from tribesmen. Whilst some of the clasps are quite common, others are very scarce and some rare. The three rarest clasps in
the series are "Kachin Hills 1892-93", "Hunza 1891" and "Chin Hills 1892-93". The medals were issued in silver to British and
Indian troops, although from 1885 onwards bronze awards were issued to native transport personnel and followers. Medals
with three or more clasps are very scarce...“
