Caring for Children in a Very Special Way
Brasfield & Gorrie was a prime leader in construction of the Walt Disney World
Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children.
The project consists of a 34,000 square foot, 7–story new elevator
lobby. It is connected at the ground floor to the main entry and
connects at each floor above through a bridge to the existing
south wing of the hospital. Also, the pavilion is comprised of 200
pediatric beds with a dedicated emergency department.
This is a seven–story facility that creates a relaxing environment,
bringing a special Disney magic into the hospital. When patients
enter they are greeted by a unique interactive lobby created by
Disney’s Imagineers.
Inspired by a soothing natural environment, the lobby features
Disney characters such as Timon and Pumba from the Lion King,
Flounder and Sebastian from The Little Mermaid plus Rutt and
Tuke from Brother Bear as well as Baloo from The Jungle Book.
The pavilion also contains an advanced 81–bed Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit and surgical suites. The natural artwork and design
themes are carried throughout the new hospital even including
custom scents on each floor.
In the lobby, children of all ages are able to draw individual markings
on a cave wall, create jungle sounds on musical step pads,
fish for virtual salmon or play in a magical world of popping bubbles
and dancing sea horses. At sunset, the area transforms into
a celestial display featuring constellations on the ceiling and a
musical score created by the patients themselves.
Technology extends to the in–room experience, where the first
Interactive Patient Care technology of its kind in Central Florida
allows bedside access to the GETWELLNETWORK PATIENT–LIFE
SYSTEM with video games, movies and the internet.
Vibrant changeable colors highlight the ceilings controlled by patients
or parents.
From the talent of Disney Imagineers, Brasfield and Gorrie General
Contractors and the entire pavilion hospital building team has
come this amazing joy and comfort to suffering youngsters and
their families.
