Contributors Gregory B. Barker, PhD, received his doctorate in School/Clinical Child Psychology from the University of Virginia in 1981. For over 25 years he has specialized in working with children and adolescents in residential, hospital, college counseling, and school settings. For 17 years Dr. Barker consulted to the Bard College Counseling Center and is currently a school psychologist in the Rondout Valley public schools. He also has a private practice in Rhinebeck, New York, where he specializes in working with families and children. Leya Barrett, MSW, LCSW, is the Family Therapist on Program I, “The Field of Dreams,” at Onarga Academy, where she specializes in the treatment of adolescents with sexual behavior problems. As a licensed clinical social worker, she is always increasing her experience with expressive arts activities and fi nding new ways to bring treatment alive for her clients. She has presented at national conferences for professionals who treat children with sexual behavior problems and at international play therapy conferences. In addition, she has coauthored (along with three of her Onarga Academy colleagues) a chapter in Using Superheroes in Counseling and Play Therapy, edited by Lawrence Rubin. The use of pop culture in counseling and play therapy is a natural fi t for Barrett, who has a special place in her heart for 1980s pop culture. Jan M. Burte, PhD, MSCP, is a Licensed Psychologist who has taught and lectured nationally and internationally on hypnosis for the past 20 years. He is a past director of the Milton H. Erickson Institute of Long Island, past president of the New York Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and a Certifi ed and Approved Consultant in Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). Dr. Burte has been published in numerous journals and books, and has appeared on radio and television discussing the applicability of hypnosis for a wide range of patients and conditions. In addition, Dr. Burte is a Certifi ed Sex Therapist (AASECT), a Diplomate in Pain Management (AAPM), and holds a postdoctoral master’s degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology. He xiii
xiv CONTRIBUTORS is an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University and is in private practice in Boca Raton, Florida. David A. Crenshaw, PhD, ABPP, RPT-S, is a Board Certifi ed Clinical Psychologist by the American Board of Professional Psychology and a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor by the Association for Play Therapy. He is founder and director of the Rhinebeck Child and Family Center in Rhinebeck, New York. He is a cofounder and currently the president of the New York Association for Play Therapy. He is the author of several books on child and adolescent psychotherapy, including Evocative Strategies in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (2007) and Therapeutic Engagement of Children and Adolescents: Play, Symbol, Drawing and Storytelling Strategies (2008). Nancy Davis, LCSW, RPT-S, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. She is a therapist in private practice at Child and Family Counseling, LLC, in Crawfordsville, Indiana. She has over 20 years of clinical experience working with children, teenagers, and adults. She served on the board of directors for the Indiana Association for Play Therapy from 1995 to 2000 and the National Association for Play Therapy, 2001–2007. She was president of the Association for Play Therapy in 2003–2004. Nancy grew up in a very musical family. Her mother, Beth Pickard, with whom she cowrote the chapter, was an elementary and a college music teacher and instilled in her a love of music. She has three children, each of whom is involved in music. The beat goes on! Pamela Dickinson, MA, earned her master’s degree in Counselor Education from the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. Her work using characters such as Basil Henderson, who are drawn from fi ction and other popular culture sources, to illustrate diagnosis skills, approaches to case conceptualization, and methods of treatment planning, emerged from her own study and practice of diagnostic, conceptualization, and treatment planning skills while pursuing her graduate education. Thelma Duffey, PhD, is professor of counseling and is also counseling program director at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Duffey spearheaded efforts to establish the Association for Creativity in Counseling, the newest division within the American Counseling Association, and has served as founding president for the association. She is also editor for the Journal of Creativity in Mental Health. Dr. Duffey has received awards for teaching and service and more recently received two international awards during the 2006 American Counseling Association convention in Montreal: the Professional Development Award by the American
