Page 10 The OSCAR - OUR 37 th YEAR MAY 2010 THE BIG PICTURE By Michael A. Dobbin and David Chernushenko “We have the power to lead abundant, fulfilling lives powered by renewable energy – and reinvigorate democracy in the process”. A new feature length documentary by Old Ottawa South filmmaker David Chernushenko is in the works. Coproduced with local producer Michael A. Dobbin of Quiet Revolution Pictures, Powerful showcases the remarkable achievements and inspiring examples of people and communities pursuing a path of conservation and renewable energy. The film explores the obstacles they encounter and introduces power players with an interest in maintaining the status quo. The feature length film is about reclaiming, or discovering for the first time, the power to do more and be more and to work within a community to accomplish more together. Headed for the Marché du Film at the Cannes International Film Festival in May, the producers have high hopes that the film will find audiences around the world. Exploring a universal theme, the subject matter is universal in asking: Who controls our energy supply and who has the power to decide which energy path to pursue? How will the quest for greater energy autonomy contribute to an important power shift that ultimately helps build a more just, equitable and healthy society and democracy? David Chernushenko, who describes himself as a Green Economy Educator and Entrepreneur, began his journey with his own electricity bill where an ongoing “nuclear debt retirement charge” appears every month. He journeys to the other side of the Atlantic to visit pioneering communities in Germany and Denmark who benefit from a 100% renewable energy supply. Out in California and back in Ontario, he leads an examination of the North America’s flirtations with renewables. Putting it all in context, he takes the audience back to his own house here in Old Ottawa South, and personal quest to be a part of a clean energy future and an empowered community. Leading by example, the viewer will discover with David the power to make a difference in their own life. More than anything, Powerful is about passionate people, alone and in communities, who work towards solutions, rather than get bogged down in the problems. People like Josef Pesch of Freiamt, Germany. Once an anti-nuclear activist, Josef now partners with small communities to develop renewable energy projects. Freiamt is a rural town that is 140% powered by renewable energy. They sell their surplus energy to the German grid and pump the profits back into their town’s coffers and the locally-owned energy cooperatives. While North American governments are mostly making excuses for not tackling climate change and dealing with major transportation and waste management challenges, the town of Linkoping, Sweden is charting a course that makes it not only a great place to live, but a showcase of smart city planning and economic development for the 21 st century. From the deputy mayor, to the cycling coordinator and the citizen-owned “waste-to-energy” plant, David meets people who are showing Canadian and American cities what the future could look like. Samsø, Denmark is a renewable energy island that has received a lot of international press for its pioneering project to be entirely powered by renewable energy. While such a dramatic change in practices could easily have generated a backlash, the citizens of Samsø appear fully supportive of this direction. Some, like farmer Andersen, want to go even further. He’s running his car and tractor on canola oil, heats with solar and biomass, has photovoltaic panels for electricity, and owns shares in the community wind turbines. Meanwhile, in contrast to Samsø, Wolfe Island, Ontario is a community divided. The massive 86-turbine wind energy project has the support of the majority, but a vocal minority is disturbed by the lack of community involvement, the disruption caused by construction, and the threats to bird sanctuaries and migration corridors. What happened on Wolfe Island to cause such deep divisions, and are there lessons about how not to develop wind energy in North America? Canadian Olympian Adam Kreek is a giant of a man (and gold medal Olympic rower) with a sense of humour and a biodiesel car. He joins David for a fast-paced and upbeat tour of California renewable energy projects. Audiences will join the guys for visits to all-woman-owned Biofuel Oasis co-op in Berkeley; the Solar Richmond project that trains visible minority men and women in rooftop solar installation – winning an award for crime reduction from the FBI in the process; and a pilgrimage to the “mecca” of renewable energy: the Real Goods/Solar Living Institute in Ukiah. Call it a gimmick, call it education, call it a revolution, but when fans at the concerts of Mr Something Something of Toronto, Ontario want more volume, they’ll need to take turns pedaling the “sound cycle” which powers the sound system. Lead singer Johan Hultqvist calls himself a “dance floor activist”, mixing in social commentary with afro-beat music made for dancing. Powerful asks fundamental and sometimes uncomfortable questions about energy and power. But unlike the vast majority of environmental documentaries, the journey for the viewer will be at times amusing, enlightening, frustrating and intriguing. Ultimately, the film provides a unique and uplifting insight into how the pursuit of a future anchored by conservation and powered by renewable energy can empower and energize those who take on such a quest. Outaouais farmers, Chantale Vaillancourt and Martin Turcot, deliver their crops from their familyoperated certified-organic Ferme aux Pleines Saveurs to the OOS drop-off site at 94 Hopewell Avenue. Basket deliveries run for 25 weeks beginning in late June to early December. Summer (17 weeks) and fall (8 weeks) baskets come in two sizes brimming full of 40 varieties of fruits and vegetables. Contents coincide with harvest times and over the course of the season include strawberries, herbs, lettuce, broccoli and squashes. Customers can even exchange up to three items on-site. “I like to nourish people with what we eat ourselves.
