The Boys’ Brigade - 2nd Wellington Company The Object of the Boys’ Brigade is the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom among Boys, the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self respect and all that tends towards true Christian manliness. As the Captaincy of the Boys’ Brigade changed with the new year, the 2010 year will be reported on by David Jackson and 2011 will be reported on by Matthew Bayliss. 2010 The final six months of 2010 were packed with activities. But the thing that really impresses me about St John’s Boys’ Brigade is the attitude and camaraderie that accompanies these activities. The Boys’ Brigade covers such a varied programme and it is great to know that we consistently operate in God’s Spirit as we build a supportive culture of these young men to develop into strong Christian men. The highlights of 2010 include: + the continued support from our Chaplain Rev Allister Lane and elder Sandy Lawson + the continuation of our Junior/Team Section which meets Mondays at 5:45pm for boys aged 7 and upwards + the growth, both spiritually and numerically + the way leadership has grown in depth, with both our adult and young leaders + the commitment of all involved to honour and respect each other as we journeyed together. Farewell It is with much sadness I decided to step away from BB service to pursue other areas of service at the end of 2010. The adventures, challenges and learning through BB will never be forgotten. I pray that each of those involved in this movement currently and in the future will receive the same blessing I did from being part of this exciting family. The past ten years have been full of change and exciting times. Thank you to all the boys, parents, leaders and supporters of St John’s Boys’ Brigade. Thank you for making this ministry such a joy. 2011 Matthew Bayliss was officially appointed as Captain at a service on 3 April 2011. Leadership has been a challenge with David and Daniel Arnold departing at the end of 2010, and Kwasi Afosa moving to Australia at the start of term 3. These capable and committed leaders are missed at BB. I would like to thank Bryan Penlington for his constant support and his ability to think creatively, and for his compassion and care for everyone. Boys’ Brigade has a small but committed group of young men attending each week. Highlights from the year include mini golf, sending messages using morse code, using compasses, and many games of soccer and stopball. The seniors have also been able to show their own talents by each taking a class in skills as diverse as building ‘Exploding Triangles’ from popsicle sticks to how to shuffle (the dance style, not the card trick). We’ve been learning about Christian Manliness and what it means to be a man, and to be a man after God’s heart. It has been encouraging for me to continue to see the boys grow in leadership and community, and to build each other up.
