Conclusion<br />
My heartfelt thanks go to all of you for <strong>the</strong> help,<br />
support, and encouragement you give me throughout<br />
<strong>the</strong> year.<br />
32<br />
I conclude this report by outl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> aims of <strong>the</strong><br />
APW which we cont<strong>in</strong>ue to strive to follow:<br />
+ To unite all <strong>in</strong> prayer, study, fellowship and<br />
service to enable <strong>the</strong>m to make a Christian<br />
witness <strong>in</strong> home, church and community<br />
Property Committee<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r year has turned around very quickly.<br />
So much attention has been focused on <strong>the</strong><br />
Christchurch earthquakes, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g extended<br />
attendance by two Property Committee eng<strong>in</strong>eers,<br />
that <strong>the</strong> first half of this year has been someth<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
a blur.<br />
We are pleased to be able to report on several<br />
sizeable pieces of work that have been completed<br />
this year.<br />
The security system upgrade went quite smoothly<br />
consider<strong>in</strong>g its scope, and <strong>the</strong> system appears to<br />
be offer<strong>in</strong>g good service. A few teeth<strong>in</strong>g problems<br />
were expected and experienced, but <strong>the</strong> worst of that<br />
seems to be over! Forthcom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stallation of alarm<br />
sounders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> foyer areas of <strong>the</strong> Conference<br />
Centre and Troup House will help to ensure that <strong>the</strong><br />
system is restored (technical jargon for ‘turned off ’!)<br />
at <strong>the</strong> earliest opportunity. Currently <strong>the</strong> system<br />
sends hundreds of messages to <strong>the</strong> monitor<strong>in</strong>g<br />
company each time it is (usually unknow<strong>in</strong>gly)<br />
activated.<br />
Sp<strong>in</strong>ks Cottage was partially re-roofed due to ‘right<br />
through’ corrosion of <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g cladd<strong>in</strong>g. Several<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r roof areas are due to receive more m<strong>in</strong>or<br />
attention soon.<br />
You will have noticed <strong>the</strong> new ‘beefed up’ bollards<br />
protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> front of <strong>the</strong> church. These were<br />
+ To support at home and abroad <strong>the</strong> work of<br />
parent churches<br />
+ To encourage an <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> worldwide<br />
mission and evangelisation<br />
Not just words, but aims that here at <strong>St</strong> John’s we<br />
have endeavoured to put <strong>in</strong>to action.<br />
Mary Gibbs<br />
President<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiated by <strong>the</strong> considerable damage experienced by<br />
one of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> door uprights, we th<strong>in</strong>k on collision<br />
with a large revers<strong>in</strong>g vehicle. Re<strong>in</strong>statement to<br />
a suitable standard was costly, although partially<br />
covered by <strong>in</strong>surance. Slight bend<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> new<br />
bollards s<strong>in</strong>ce has confirmed <strong>the</strong> need!<br />
Work cont<strong>in</strong>ues on <strong>the</strong> redevelopment of <strong>the</strong> lower<br />
level of Sp<strong>in</strong>ks Cottage and on potential upgrad<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of <strong>the</strong> upper levels of Troup House…..both still at<br />
plann<strong>in</strong>g stages. Information will be shared when<br />
it’s sufficiently developed.<br />
The current large blot (blot, not blob!) on <strong>the</strong><br />
radar is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>surance premiums we<br />
are experienc<strong>in</strong>g as a result of <strong>the</strong> Christchurch<br />
earthquakes. The whole church (<strong>in</strong> fact all owners<br />
of large properties) faces huge <strong>in</strong>creases, at least <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> next five years, as <strong>the</strong> world’s <strong>in</strong>surance coffers<br />
are re-filled. We’re look<strong>in</strong>g at ways to reduce <strong>the</strong>se,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> potential for earthquake streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of <strong>the</strong> church build<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> next couple of years.<br />
I’m grateful to <strong>the</strong> committee for <strong>the</strong>ir work, David<br />
Coplon for his expert hand on <strong>the</strong> tiller and our two<br />
terrific caretakers: Graeme Coppell <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and Mark Farrow <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon.<br />
