5 Results 25 Concerning the chemical status of groundwater bodies and the “measures necessary to prevent or limit the input of pollutants into groundwater and to prevent the deterioration” (WFD, Art.4(b)(i)) the same criteria and indicator to achieve a good status for surface water as explained in the paragraph above can be referred to. Regarding protected areas “Member States shall achieve compliance with any standards and objectives” (Art.4(c)). This is addressed in the EWS standard to restore and preserve water- cycle related HCV areas (EWS, principle 3). EWS standard and the Programme of Measures of the WFD (Art.11) The directive provides guidance towards the PoMs under article 11 but is realized within the river basin district on a national level and co-ordinated on an international level. The evaluation of the PoMs provided insight on how the EWS standard can support a Member State in practice with the implementation of the WFD. The river basin district for the German part of the Elbe River basin suggested measures for agriculture being divided into the following categories: (i) measures for reduction of nutrient inputs, pesticides and sediments, (ii) measures to protect drinking water zones, (iii) measures to improve habitat and (iv) measures to reduce water abstraction. The EWS standard could contribute to all suggested measures to reduce effects from agriculture with indicators of monitoring and mitigation (Table 5).
