DESCHUTES COUNTY BULLETIN PUBLISHED<br />
"<strong>Geology</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mineral</strong> Resources <strong>of</strong> Deschutes County, <strong>Ore</strong>gon," by<br />
N.V. Peterson, E.A. Groh, E.M. Taylor, <strong>and</strong> D.E. Stensl<strong>and</strong>, has<br />
just been published as Bulletin 89 by the <strong>Ore</strong>gon <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Geology</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mineral</strong> <strong>Industries</strong>.<br />
For the past 40 million years, Deschutes County has had a<br />
complex history <strong>of</strong> volcanism. <strong>The</strong> products <strong>of</strong> these eruptions,<br />
particularly the more recent ones, are basic to the economy <strong>of</strong><br />
the County: <strong>The</strong> unique volcanic scenery promotes recreational<br />
expansion, while the abundance <strong>of</strong> construction materials satisfies<br />
the ever-increasing urban development. As population <strong>and</strong><br />
l<strong>and</strong> use increase, however, the knowledge <strong>of</strong> the locations <strong>and</strong><br />
extent <strong>of</strong> the resource materials becomes m<strong>and</strong>atory in order to<br />
conserve <strong>and</strong> plan for the future.<br />
<strong>The</strong> 66-page bulletin is illustrated <strong>and</strong> includes a geologic<br />
map <strong>of</strong> the County, larger scale geologic maps <strong>of</strong> the Bend <strong>and</strong><br />
Redmond areas, <strong>and</strong> a locality map <strong>of</strong> mineral resources.<br />
Bulletin 89 is for sale at the <strong>Department</strong>'s <strong>of</strong>fices in Portl<strong>and</strong>,<br />
Baker, <strong>and</strong> Grants Pass. <strong>The</strong> price is $6.50.<br />
