Why do I exist?<br />

These are <strong>the</strong> most funda<strong>me</strong>ntal<br />
questions you can ask <strong>in</strong> life. Have you<br />
ever asked <strong>the</strong>se questions, wonder<strong>in</strong>g<br />
where to turn <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> answer?<br />
The truth is that you were made<br />
by God and <strong>for</strong> God. Until you<br />
understand this, life will never make<br />
sense. God has never created anyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
without a purpose. Colossians 1:16<br />
says; For everyth<strong>in</strong>g, absolutely<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g, above and below, visible and<br />
<strong>in</strong>visible…everyth<strong>in</strong>g got started <strong>in</strong> God<br />
and f<strong>in</strong>ds its purpose <strong>in</strong> Him.” The<br />

pleasure!! You,… God…created<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g and it is <strong>for</strong> Your<br />
(God’s) pleasure that <strong>the</strong>y exist and were<br />

The Bible says that God is<br />
love. It doesn’t say God has love. It<br />
says God is love. Love is <strong>the</strong> essence<br />
of His character. God created you as an<br />
object of His love. You were made to<br />
be loved by God—that’s your number<br />
one purpose. God didn’t need to love<br />
you. He wasn’t lonely. He didn’t need<br />
servants. He wasn’t bored. God created<br />
humans because He wanted to love<br />
us. We were planned <strong>for</strong> His pleasure.<br />

Consider These Thoughts BY Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)<br />
“Make no reserve, exercise no choice but obey His (<strong>Christ</strong>’s) command. When<br />
you know what He commands, do <strong>not</strong> hesitate, question, or try to avoid it, but ‘do it’,<br />
do it at once, do it <strong>hear</strong>tily, do it cheerfully, do it to <strong>the</strong> full. It is but a little th<strong>in</strong>g that,<br />
as our Lord has bought us with <strong>the</strong> price of His own blood, we should be His<br />
servants. The apostles frequently call <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>the</strong> bond-slaves of <strong>Christ</strong>. Where our<br />
‘Authorized Version’ softly puts it “servant” it really is “bond-slave.” The early sa<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
delighted to count <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>Christ</strong>’s absolute property, bought by Him, owned by<br />
Him and wholly at His disposal. Paul even went so far as to rejoice that he had <strong>the</strong><br />
marks of his Master’s brand on him, and he cries, “let no man trouble <strong>me</strong>; <strong>for</strong> I bear <strong>in</strong><br />
my body <strong>the</strong> marks of <strong>the</strong> Lord Jesus.”<br />
There was <strong>the</strong> end of all debates, he was <strong>the</strong> Lord’s, and <strong>the</strong> marks of <strong>the</strong><br />
scourges, <strong>the</strong> rods, and <strong>the</strong> stones were <strong>the</strong> broad arrow of <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g which marked<br />
Paul’s body as <strong>the</strong> property of Jesus <strong>the</strong> Lord. Now if <strong>the</strong> sa<strong>in</strong>ts of old ti<strong>me</strong> gloried <strong>in</strong><br />
obey<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Christ</strong>, I pray that you and I, <strong>for</strong>gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sect to which we may belong, or<br />
even <strong>the</strong> nation of which we <strong>for</strong>m a part, may feel that our first object <strong>in</strong> life is to obey<br />
our Lord and <strong>not</strong> to follow a human leader, or to promote a religious or political<br />
party. This one th<strong>in</strong>g we <strong>me</strong>an to do, and so follow <strong>the</strong> advice of Solomon as he says,<br />
“Let th<strong>in</strong>e eyes look right on, and let th<strong>in</strong>e eyelids look straight be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong>e.” Beloved,<br />
let us endeavor to be obedient <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ute as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> greater matters, <strong>for</strong> it is<br />
<strong>in</strong> details that true obedience is best seen.<br />
We are to wait upon our Master humbly, reverently, feel<strong>in</strong>g it an honor to do<br />
anyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> Him. We are to be self surrendered, given up hence<strong>for</strong>th to <strong>the</strong> Lord, free<br />
<strong>me</strong>n, and yet most truly serfs of this Great Emperor. We are never so free as when we<br />
own our sacred serfdom….Often Paul calls himself <strong>the</strong> servant of <strong>the</strong> Lord, and even<br />
<strong>the</strong> slave of <strong>Christ</strong>, and he glories <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> brand<strong>in</strong>g iron’s marks upon his flesh. “I bear,”<br />
says he, “<strong>in</strong> my body <strong>the</strong> marks of <strong>the</strong> Lord Jesus; hence<strong>for</strong>th let no man trouble<br />
<strong>me</strong>.” We count it liberty to bear <strong>the</strong> bonds of <strong>Christ</strong>. We reckon this to be supre<strong>me</strong>st<br />
freedom <strong>for</strong> we s<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> psalmist, “ I am thy servant; I am <strong>the</strong>y servant, Thou has<br />
loosed my bonds” “B<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> sacrifice with cords, even with cords to <strong>the</strong> horns of <strong>the</strong><br />
altar.” Such is <strong>the</strong> conduct which our servitude to our Lord requires.<br />
Every true <strong>Christ</strong>ian pronounces this phrase, “Jesus our Lord,” with <strong>the</strong> emphasis<br />
of unreservedness. We desire that <strong>Christ</strong> Jesus should be our Lord <strong>in</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
Lord over every part of our be<strong>in</strong>g…He who truly loves Jesus, and who knows that he is<br />
one of those who are redee<strong>me</strong>d by Him, says with all his <strong>hear</strong>t that Jesus is Lord, his<br />
absolute Sovereign, his Despot, if that word be used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense of <strong>Christ</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
unlimited monarchy and supre<strong>me</strong> sway over <strong>the</strong> soul. Yea, O “Jesus our Lord,” thou<br />
shalt be <strong>the</strong> autocratic, imperial Master of our <strong>hear</strong>t, and of <strong>the</strong> whole dom<strong>in</strong>ion of our<br />
manhood.

This Month’s Extraord<strong>in</strong>ary Uses For Ord<strong>in</strong>ary Th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
Oven Mitts<br />
Use as beverage cozy or egg war<strong>me</strong>r…Keep that mug of java or tea from gett<strong>in</strong>g cold<br />
when you’re called away by plac<strong>in</strong>g an oven mitt over it. The glove’s <strong>in</strong>sulation will<br />
keep it warm until you get back. You can also use an oven mitt to keep boiled eggs<br />
warm <strong>for</strong> up to half an hour. Conversely, an oven mitt will help keep a cold dr<strong>in</strong>k<br />
colder longer.<br />
Use <strong>for</strong> dust<strong>in</strong>g and polish<strong>in</strong>g. ….although oven mitts are typically conf<strong>in</strong>ed to kitchen<br />
duty, <strong>the</strong>y are actually great <strong>for</strong> dust<strong>in</strong>g an polish<strong>in</strong>g around your house. Use one side<br />
of <strong>the</strong> mitt to apply wax or polish to your furniture and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side to buff it up. It’s<br />
a great way to use old mitts or all those extra ones you’ve collected.<br />
When prun<strong>in</strong>g thorny plants….although oven mitts may be a bit too awkward to use <strong>for</strong><br />
weed<strong>in</strong>g or plant<strong>in</strong>g seedl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> your garden, <strong>the</strong>y can co<strong>me</strong> <strong>in</strong> handy when it co<strong>me</strong>s<br />
ti<strong>me</strong> to prune trees, hedges and bushes—particularly those thorny ones such as holly,<br />
firethorn and rosebushes.<br />
Remove hot eng<strong>in</strong>e parts….Keep<strong>in</strong>g an oven mitt <strong>in</strong> your car’s glove compart<strong>me</strong>nt or<br />
trunk can make life a lot easier when you need to handle hot radiator caps and <strong>the</strong> like<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g an on <strong>the</strong> road e<strong>me</strong>rgency.<br />
Change a hot light bulb….Did <strong>the</strong> light bulb on your read<strong>in</strong>g lamp just blow out? Don’t<br />
scorch your f<strong>in</strong>gers when replac<strong>in</strong>g it. Once you’ve removed <strong>the</strong> lampshade put on an<br />
oven mitt, remove <strong>the</strong> dead bulb <strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> socket and toss it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> garbage. That way,<br />
you won’t still be blow<strong>in</strong>g on your f<strong>in</strong>ger tips when screw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new bulb!!<br />

STRAWBERRIES<br />
Strawberries are one of <strong>the</strong> season’s most delicious fruit, and <strong>the</strong>y pack more<br />
vitam<strong>in</strong> C than any o<strong>the</strong>r berry. Make <strong>the</strong> most of <strong>the</strong>se nutritional jewels by swapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>for</strong> jam on a sandwich to dispense with <strong>the</strong> added sugar and calories. Slice<br />
so<strong>me</strong> onto whole wheat toast spread with peanut butter or almond butter, or serve<br />
<strong>the</strong>m over whole gra<strong>in</strong> pancakes, <strong>for</strong> satisfy<strong>in</strong>g sweetness.<br />
Turkey-Strawberry-Sp<strong>in</strong>ach Salad<br />
1 lb. asparagus spears<br />
½ cup bottled poppy seed salad dress<strong>in</strong>g or<br />
Italian salad dress<strong>in</strong>g<br />
1 teaspoon f<strong>in</strong>ely shredded orange peel<br />
1 tablespoon orange juice<br />
8 cups fresh baby sp<strong>in</strong>ach, torn fresh<br />
sp<strong>in</strong>ach or assosrted greens<br />
2 cups sliced fresh strawberries and/or<br />
whole blueberries<br />
¾ to 1 pound cooked turkey or chicken, cut<br />
<strong>in</strong>to ½ <strong>in</strong>ch cubes<br />
¼ cup pecan halves, toasted<br />
CARROTS<br />
Snap off and discard woody bases<br />
from asparagus. (If desired, scrape off<br />
scales.) Cut <strong>in</strong>to 1 <strong>in</strong>ch pieces. Cook<br />
asparagus, covered, <strong>in</strong> a small amount of<br />
boil<strong>in</strong>g lightly salted water <strong>for</strong> 3 to 5<br />
m<strong>in</strong>utes or until crisp tender. Dra<strong>in</strong><br />
asparagus. R<strong>in</strong>se with cold water. Let stand<br />
<strong>in</strong> cold water until cool; dra<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Meanwhile, <strong>for</strong> dress<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> a small<br />
bowl stir toge<strong>the</strong>r poppy seed dress<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
orange peel, and orange juice, set aside.<br />
In a salad bowl comb<strong>in</strong>e asparagus,<br />
sp<strong>in</strong>ach, berries, and turkey. Place on salad<br />
plates. Top with toasted pecans .Drizzle<br />
with dress<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Makes 4 to 6 ma<strong>in</strong> dish serv<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Carrots conta<strong>in</strong> more carotenoids, <strong>the</strong> cancer fight<strong>in</strong>g antioxidants that give <strong>the</strong>m<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir orange pig<strong>me</strong>nt, than any o<strong>the</strong>r vegetable. The body converts <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to vitam<strong>in</strong><br />
A, essential <strong>for</strong> healthy sk<strong>in</strong> and eyes and a strong immune system. Plus, one cup of<br />
carrots packs <strong>in</strong> more fiber than a slice of whole gra<strong>in</strong> bread.
C<strong>in</strong>namon Carrot Muff<strong>in</strong>s<br />
¾ cup al purpose flour<br />
½ cup whole wheat flour<br />
2 tablespoon wheat germ<br />
1 teaspoon ground c<strong>in</strong>namon<br />
1 teaspoon bak<strong>in</strong>g powder<br />
½ teaspoon bak<strong>in</strong>g soda<br />
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt<br />
1/3 cup vegetable oil<br />
1/3 cup buttermilk<br />
2 large eggs<br />
¾ cup light brown sugar<br />
2 cups f<strong>in</strong>ely grated carrots (4-5 carrots)<br />
Corn Bake<br />
1 small onion<br />
½ green pepper<br />
½ cup margar<strong>in</strong>e<br />
1 can whole kernel corn<br />
1 can cream style corn<br />
1 box Jiffy cornbread mix<br />
2 beaten eggs<br />
1-2 cups shredded Cheddar<br />
(or your favorite) cheese<br />
1 cup sour cream<br />
Preheat oven to 350°. L<strong>in</strong>e a standard<br />
muff<strong>in</strong> t<strong>in</strong> with paper cups. Whisk flours,<br />
wheat germ, c<strong>in</strong>namon, bak<strong>in</strong>g powder,<br />
bak<strong>in</strong>g soda, and salt <strong>in</strong> a bowl. Whisk<br />
rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>in</strong> a separate<br />
bowl. Fold dry <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>in</strong>to wet and mix<br />
until just comb<strong>in</strong>ed. Spoon batter <strong>in</strong>to<br />
cups. Bake until a toothpick <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
center of a muff<strong>in</strong> co<strong>me</strong>s out clean, about<br />
22 m<strong>in</strong>utes. Cool <strong>in</strong> pan <strong>for</strong> 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes,<br />
<strong>the</strong>n transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly<br />
be<strong>for</strong>e serv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Yield 12 muff<strong>in</strong>s<br />
Saute onion and green pepper <strong>in</strong><br />
margar<strong>in</strong>e. Add vegetables to <strong>the</strong> 2 cans of<br />
corn, eggs and cornbread mix.<br />
Stir and pour <strong>in</strong>to a greased 9 x 13<br />
<strong>in</strong>ch pan. Spread on 1 cup sour<br />
cream. Spr<strong>in</strong>kle with 1 to 2 cups shredded<br />
cheese. Bake at 350 deg <strong>for</strong> 45 m<strong>in</strong>utes. (or<br />
until lightly browned and toothpick or knife<br />
<strong>in</strong>serted co<strong>me</strong>s out clean)<br />

emotions may extend <strong>the</strong> years of quality liv<strong>in</strong>g, says Anthony Ong, assistant professor of<br />
human develop<strong>me</strong>nt at Cornell University. Why? Happier people are more likely to<br />
exercise, eat well, and <strong>not</strong> smoke. And upbeat folks produce fewer of <strong>the</strong> harmful hormones<br />
related to stress.<br />
+ Take steps to protect your sk<strong>in</strong> while garden<strong>in</strong>g etc s<strong>in</strong>ce ultraviolet rays <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g, sasys Macrene alexiades, assistant cl<strong>in</strong>ical professor of dermatology of Yale<br />
University School of Medic<strong>in</strong>e. Gloves will protect your hands and a wide brim<strong>me</strong>d hat will<br />

+ To make your brightly hued nail polish last longer, be<strong>for</strong>e pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, swipe nails (even if<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are bare) with polish remover to get rid of any moisture or your sk<strong>in</strong>’s natural oils,<br />
which can prevent polish from stick<strong>in</strong>g, says nail artist Julie Kandalec. Always use a base<br />
coat and a top coat, but skip fat dry<strong>in</strong>g varieties-although convenient, <strong>the</strong>y can cause polish to<br />

When <strong>in</strong>fants are first <strong>in</strong>troduced to solid foods, <strong>the</strong>y often develp a golden<br />
sk<strong>in</strong> tone because of all <strong>the</strong> pureed carrots and squash <strong>the</strong>y are gett<strong>in</strong>g.” Says<br />
NoelleSherber, M.D., a Baltimore based dermatologist. “later <strong>in</strong> life, <strong>the</strong> variety <strong>in</strong><br />
your diet dilutes that effect.” A recent study from <strong>the</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom found that<br />
eat<strong>in</strong>g plenty of fruits and vegetables each day imbues sk<strong>in</strong> with a glow that’s more<br />
attractive to o<strong>the</strong>rs than a tan. That’s thanks to carotenoids, a class of<br />

dermatologist. <strong>“If</strong> your digestion stagnates, your complexion suffers—it’s nature’s<br />
warn<strong>in</strong>g sign.” Limit simple carbs(white breads and processed foods) <strong>in</strong> favor of<br />
complex ones (whole gra<strong>in</strong>s and produce). Rich <strong>in</strong> fiber, <strong>the</strong>y help buffer sugar<br />
absorption and fend off rudd<strong>in</strong>ess. Likewise, while fats are necessary to keep your<br />
sk<strong>in</strong> hydrated, avoid <strong>the</strong> saturated k<strong>in</strong>ds and opt <strong>for</strong> o<strong>me</strong>ga 3s. (salmon and fish<br />
oil), monounsaturated (olive oil), and polyunsaturated (nuts) all of which aid<br />
digestion. While probiotics <strong>in</strong> yogurt may improve sk<strong>in</strong> tone, choose dairy that’s<br />
free of hormones, which are associated with acne and dull sk<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Unless you regularly eat o<strong>me</strong>ga 3 rich foods such as salmon or walnuts, fish<br />
oil supple<strong>me</strong>nts may be your best bet <strong>for</strong> decreas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and<br />
reviv<strong>in</strong>g dry sk<strong>in</strong>. Also consider tak<strong>in</strong>g glucosam<strong>in</strong>e, a natural compound found <strong>in</strong><br />
cartilage. It’s ,most commonly used <strong>for</strong> osteoarthritis, but dermatologists are<br />
report<strong>in</strong>g benefits such as fewer wr<strong>in</strong>kles and improved hydration. And get your
vitam<strong>in</strong> levels checked at your annual physical: Dietary deficiencies can show up<br />
as sk<strong>in</strong> problems. A multi can fill any gaps.<br />

If you’re like most people, you down your pills with juice or food, th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g you’re<br />
do<strong>in</strong>g your stomach a favor by <strong>not</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>me</strong>dications alone. As it turns out, you may<br />
be do<strong>in</strong>g more harm than good to food drug <strong>in</strong>teractions.<br />
Recent research shows that foods and beverages can have a dramatic effect on<br />
how <strong>the</strong> body absorbs certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>me</strong>dications.<br />
“Twenty years ago, a team of researchers and I realized that grapefruit juice <strong>could</strong><br />
cause many <strong>me</strong>dications to be as much as 10 ti<strong>me</strong>s more powerful than <strong>the</strong>y’re <strong>me</strong>ant<br />
to be,” says David G. Bailey, PH.D., cl<strong>in</strong>ical professor of pharmacology at <strong>the</strong> University of<br />
Western Ontario <strong>in</strong> Canada.
Thanks to <strong>the</strong>ir research, more than 50 <strong>me</strong>dications now carry cautions about<br />
grapefruit juice on <strong>the</strong>ir labels.<br />
Now Bailey has discovered that grapefruit, apple and orange juices can actually<br />
have <strong>the</strong> opposite effect on so<strong>me</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r drugs. “They block <strong>the</strong> pills’ absorption, so you<br />
get less or even no benefit from tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m.” says Bailey. “This might cause so<strong>me</strong>one<br />
to th<strong>in</strong>k that <strong>the</strong>y need to switch to a ‘better’ <strong>me</strong>dication—when <strong>in</strong> fact chang<strong>in</strong>g what<br />
<strong>the</strong>y eat, or when, <strong>would</strong> make <strong>the</strong> drug effective.”<br />
How long should you wait? In most cases, you can consu<strong>me</strong> a potentially pill<br />
block<strong>in</strong>g food or beverage about three to four hours after you’ve taken your <strong>me</strong>ds, but<br />
it’s best to ask your pharmacist, who can tell you <strong>for</strong> sure. Plus, he/she can check to see<br />
if o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>me</strong>dications or supple<strong>me</strong>nts you take might fur<strong>the</strong>r affect how your body<br />
absorbs your <strong>me</strong>dic<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

But like all liv<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs, ,mosquitoes play an important role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ecosystem, so<br />
it’s <strong>not</strong> a good idea to try to kill every last one. However, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ir bite can cause<br />
an itchy welt at best and spread disease at worst, here are so<strong>me</strong> simple steps you<br />
can take to discourage <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> your garden.<br />
Understand how <strong>the</strong>y breed and feed. Like butterflies, mosquitoes have a four part<br />
life cycle, egg, larva, pupa and adult. Females lay eggs on <strong>the</strong> surface of<br />
water. The aquatic larvae are <strong>not</strong> strong swim<strong>me</strong>rs, so <strong>the</strong> female seeks water<br />
with little or no move<strong>me</strong>nt. The larvae feed on bacteria and algae and go through<br />
several molts, eventually pupat<strong>in</strong>g and e<strong>me</strong>rg<strong>in</strong>g as w<strong>in</strong>ged adults.<br />
Adult mosquitoes are nectar feeders and poll<strong>in</strong>ate plants such as orchids and<br />
goldenrods. The females feed on blood to get iron and prote<strong>in</strong> only when <strong>the</strong>y’re<br />
ready to reproduce. Mosquitoes are a food source <strong>for</strong> a myriad of wildlife species,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g dragonflies, frogs, lizards, fish, birds and bats.<br />
Shut down <strong>the</strong> mosquito nursery. Anyth<strong>in</strong>g that holds water—clogged ra<strong>in</strong><br />
gutters, flowerpots, puddles on tarps, or kiddie pools—will serve as a nursery <strong>for</strong><br />
mosquito larvae. It takes a m<strong>in</strong>imum of five days <strong>for</strong> larvae to turn <strong>in</strong>to bit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
adults, so empty birdbaths and o<strong>the</strong>r stand<strong>in</strong>g water twice a week. Stock garden<br />
ponds with fish and encourage predators such as frogs and dragonflies. Goldfish<br />
and mosquito fish are <strong>not</strong> native so never release <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to natural waterways.<br />
Pesticides can be toxic to predators that reduce mosquito populations. Never put<br />
oil on water surfaces, as this pollutes <strong>the</strong> water and kills many <strong>for</strong>ms of life.
If elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g breed<strong>in</strong>g areas and encourag<strong>in</strong>g natural predators isn’t do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
job, you can add a bacteria called Bacillus thur<strong>in</strong>giensis israelensis ( Bri) to<br />
ponds. Purchase Bri <strong>in</strong> disc <strong>for</strong>m at garden stores, water garden suppliers, and<br />
ho<strong>me</strong> improve<strong>me</strong>nt centers. But be aware that though Bri won’t harm birds,<br />
mammals, or amphibians, it can be harmful to <strong>in</strong>sects that are mosquito predators.<br />
Get <strong>the</strong> better of <strong>the</strong> biters. Females f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir blood <strong>me</strong>als by follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trails<br />
of carbon dioxide, body heat, and water vapor that vertebrates exude. They aren’t<br />
attracted to light, so all purpose bug zappers don’t work (although <strong>the</strong>y will kill<br />
thousands of beneficial <strong>in</strong>sects.)<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Centers <strong>for</strong> disease Control and Prevention, repellents conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> active <strong>in</strong>gredients DEET, picarid<strong>in</strong>, and oil of lemon eucalyptus are most<br />
effective aga<strong>in</strong>st mosquitoes. Natural repellents with citronella, lemon balm, and<br />
m<strong>in</strong>t are effective if reapplied often. There are no plants that repel mosquitoes on<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own.<br />
So<strong>me</strong>ti<strong>me</strong>s common sense is your best solution. Avoid go<strong>in</strong>g outside at dawn and<br />
dusk, when mosquitoes are most active, and wear long sleeves to cover exposed<br />
sk<strong>in</strong>. Mosquitoes are <strong>not</strong> strong flyers, so a fan is often all you need to keep <strong>the</strong>m<br />
away.<br />
Female mosquitoes can transmit disease from one organism <strong>the</strong>y bite to <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>next</strong>. In North A<strong>me</strong>rica, <strong>the</strong>y can pass on several types of encephalitis, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
West Nile Virus, which affects humans and o<strong>the</strong>r mammals. Mosquitoes also pass<br />
diseases (can<strong>in</strong>e <strong>hear</strong>tworm, <strong>for</strong> example) to do<strong>me</strong>stic animals such as horses, cats<br />
and dogs.<br />
That said, mosquitoes are more of a nuisance than a health threat <strong>in</strong> this part of<br />
<strong>the</strong> world. Each year, millions of people <strong>in</strong> North A<strong>me</strong>rica are bitten y mosquitoes,<br />
but only a few get sick. Overuse of pesticides can lead to poison<strong>in</strong>g, pollution, and<br />
<strong>the</strong> death of beneficial wildlife.<br />
The key to m<strong>in</strong>imiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> annoyance and <strong>the</strong> risk of disease from mosquitoes is<br />
prevention.<br />
TOADS<br />
(I have always liked toads from <strong>the</strong> ti<strong>me</strong> I was a child, and thought this a good article about<br />
<strong>the</strong>m and how beneficial <strong>the</strong>y are. I try to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> population <strong>in</strong> our yard. )<br />
Roll out <strong>the</strong> red carpet <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> humble toad, one of <strong>the</strong> most useful critters <strong>in</strong> your<br />
garden. And no, he can’t give you warts!!
Frogs will just have to share <strong>the</strong> award. When <strong>the</strong> Association of Zoos and<br />
aquariums declared 2008 <strong>the</strong> Year of <strong>the</strong> Frog (which <strong>the</strong>y did <strong>in</strong> order to call<br />
attention to <strong>the</strong> global decl<strong>in</strong>e of frogs and o<strong>the</strong>r amphibians) <strong>the</strong>y <strong>me</strong>ant toads,<br />
too—because toads are a type of frog. And toads are actually more likely to show<br />
up <strong>in</strong> a typical garden, because <strong>the</strong>y are more adapted than o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>ds of frogs to<br />
terrestrial habitats (as opposed to aquatic ones.)<br />
What better way to celebrate than to roll out <strong>the</strong> red carpet <strong>for</strong> toads <strong>in</strong> your<br />
garden? They’re easy to attract and <strong>the</strong>y make great garden <strong>in</strong>habitants.<br />
Learn to recognize toads. There are many species of toads, but <strong>the</strong>y typically<br />
belong to <strong>the</strong> family Bufonidae. Toads generally have a stocky appearance, dry<br />
sk<strong>in</strong>, and short, thick legs with little webb<strong>in</strong>g between <strong>the</strong>ir toes. They move<br />
around by walk<strong>in</strong>g and rak<strong>in</strong>g short, quick hops ra<strong>the</strong>r than massive leaps or<br />
underwater dives. Many sport tan, gray and brown patterns that camouflage <strong>the</strong>m<br />
<strong>in</strong> dry leaves or rocky terra<strong>in</strong>. These adaptations allow <strong>the</strong>m to range fur<strong>the</strong>r from<br />
water <strong>for</strong> longer and survive <strong>in</strong> dryer ecosystems than o<strong>the</strong>r frogs.<br />
Build a toad kitchen. To provide food <strong>for</strong> toads, select native plants <strong>for</strong> your<br />
garden. This isn’t because toads eat plants—like all amphibians, <strong>the</strong>y are<br />
carnivorous, consum<strong>in</strong>g any liv<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y can capture with <strong>the</strong>ir sticky tongues<br />
and stuff down <strong>the</strong>ir throats. So<strong>me</strong> large species tackle mice, snakes and even<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r frogs, but <strong>in</strong>sects and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vertebrates are <strong>the</strong> most common prey. You<br />
have <strong>the</strong> best chance of attract<strong>in</strong>g a healthy <strong>in</strong>sect population—and thus, happy<br />
toads—with native plants.<br />
Dial back your level of control. Garden designs that are <strong>not</strong> overly tidy provide<br />
good habitat <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>sects and shelter <strong>for</strong> toads. If you cr<strong>in</strong>ge at <strong>the</strong> thought of<br />
provid<strong>in</strong>g habitat <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>sects, re<strong>me</strong>mber that toads are voracious predators that<br />
will help keep pests <strong>in</strong> check. Toads are actually a far better <strong>me</strong>thod of pest<br />
control than toxic chemicals, which don’t kill just <strong>in</strong>sects—<strong>the</strong>y kill toads,<br />
too. Amphibians as a group are extre<strong>me</strong>ly sensitive to tox<strong>in</strong>s, which <strong>the</strong>y readily<br />
absorb through <strong>the</strong>ir sk<strong>in</strong>. And speak<strong>in</strong>g of toad sk<strong>in</strong> and tox<strong>in</strong>s, toads don’t have<br />
warts. The bumps on <strong>the</strong>ir sk<strong>in</strong> are called aprotid glands, and <strong>the</strong>y produce tox<strong>in</strong>s<br />
that make toads taste bad to predators. You CANNOT get warts by touch<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
toad.<br />
Give tadpoles a pool. Although adult toads are terrestrial, <strong>the</strong>y rely on stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
water <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir eggs and tadpoles. If you don’t have a lake or pond nearby, create a<br />
simple garden pond. Bigger is better, but even small, prefabricated plastic pools<br />
work, provided <strong>the</strong>y have gradually slop<strong>in</strong>g sides or plenty of vegetation and<br />
branches dipp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> water to allow <strong>the</strong> toads easy entry and exit. Toads will
also attach <strong>the</strong>ir eggs, which <strong>the</strong>y lay <strong>in</strong> long str<strong>in</strong>gs, to this plant material. Be<br />
careful about <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g fish, which will f<strong>in</strong>d toad eggs and tadpoles a tasty<br />
treat. If you have fish, provide plenty of aquatic vegetation and underwater<br />
branches near which tadpoles can hide.<br />
It’s quite a sight to f<strong>in</strong>d dozens of toads mat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> your pond <strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g. The trill<strong>in</strong>g<br />
calls of <strong>the</strong> males will be your first <strong>in</strong>dicator, but toads are <strong>not</strong> shy and are easy to<br />
see float<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> surface. Even if you don’t attract a breed<strong>in</strong>g population, just<br />
know<strong>in</strong>g that you’ve created a friendly habitat <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>se important little creatures<br />
will make you feel good!<br />

A LONG HARD DAY ON SKIS<br />
Merrill H. Doud had <strong>the</strong> contract to carry <strong>the</strong> mail between M<strong>in</strong>eral Po<strong>in</strong>t and White<br />
Cross <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1880’s. M<strong>in</strong>eral Po<strong>in</strong>t was a m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g town located near <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> divide<br />
between Silverton and Lake City, at about 12,000 feet altitude.<br />
The skis used were so<strong>me</strong>where between eight and ten feet <strong>in</strong> length, and each probably<br />
weighed about eight pounds. The skier used a s<strong>in</strong>gle pole to control <strong>the</strong> slats. Doud left M<strong>in</strong>eral<br />
Po<strong>in</strong>t be<strong>for</strong>e 8:00 a.m. and went to White Cross, return<strong>in</strong>g that afternoon after climb<strong>in</strong>g at least<br />
a thousand feet.<br />
When he arrived back, <strong>the</strong> postman learned that a m<strong>in</strong>er had just blown a portion of his<br />
hand off pick<strong>in</strong>g a “missed hole.” A missed hole was one <strong>in</strong> which dynamite was lodged but had<br />
<strong>not</strong> gone off <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> planned explosion. Medical attention was needed as soon as possible, so Doud<br />
skied down to Silverton, about 15 miles away, to get a doctor. He and <strong>the</strong> <strong>me</strong>dical man returned,<br />
ski<strong>in</strong>g up about a three thousand foot rise <strong>in</strong> altitude by around six <strong>the</strong> <strong>next</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
In all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>trepid mailman had skied <strong>for</strong> twenty two hours and logged fifty two<br />
miles! With today’s light skis on level ground, that <strong>would</strong> still be quite a challenge <strong>for</strong> both speed<br />
and endurance.<br />
A WORLD FAMOUS AERIALIST<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> world’s most renowned aerial per<strong>for</strong><strong>me</strong>rs made his headquarters <strong>in</strong> Denver<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> height of his career. The man just <strong>could</strong> <strong>not</strong> resist walk<strong>in</strong>g both tight and loose<br />
ropes across deep canyons or mak<strong>in</strong>g parachute jumps from balloons be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> era of<br />
aviation. He per<strong>for</strong><strong>me</strong>d his stunts throughout <strong>the</strong> U.S., Java, Mexico, Borneo, and Europe.<br />
Willie Ivy was born <strong>in</strong> San Antonio, Texas, <strong>in</strong> 1866 and moved to Denver as a<br />
youngster. For awhile, he per<strong>for</strong><strong>me</strong>d with a troupe known as <strong>the</strong> Baldw<strong>in</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>rs and adopted<br />
<strong>the</strong> na<strong>me</strong> by which he beca<strong>me</strong> famous: Ivy Baldw<strong>in</strong>.
Baldw<strong>in</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Signal Corps dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Spanish-A<strong>me</strong>rican war and survived when his<br />
observation balloon was shot down. He contracted with Elich Gardens, a Denver amuse<strong>me</strong>nt<br />
park, to per<strong>for</strong>m regularly and made it his <strong>in</strong>ternational headquarters.<br />
He was <strong>the</strong> second man <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation to make a parachute jump. (<strong>the</strong> first was his tour<strong>in</strong>g<br />
partner, Tom Baldw<strong>in</strong>) His most spectacular feats, though, were probably his walks<br />
across Eldorado Canyon, 582 feet above <strong>the</strong> streambed, first on a tight rope and <strong>the</strong>n on a loose<br />
rope sway<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d.<br />
Dropp<strong>in</strong>g from high above <strong>the</strong> streets <strong>in</strong> Chicago and New York, he showed many urban<br />
dwellers <strong>the</strong>ir first sight of a parachute jump. Baldw<strong>in</strong> was among <strong>the</strong> first <strong>in</strong>ductees to <strong>the</strong><br />
Colorado Aviation Hall of Fa<strong>me</strong>.<br />
Late <strong>in</strong> life, he made his ho<strong>me</strong> at Marshdale, near Evergreen. At <strong>the</strong> age of eighty two, he<br />
took ano<strong>the</strong>r ropewalk across <strong>the</strong> canyon at Eldorado Spr<strong>in</strong>gs; his eighty sixth stroll across <strong>the</strong><br />
rav<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>re. If he ever ca<strong>me</strong> close to fall<strong>in</strong>g, he never admitted it. Baldw<strong>in</strong> lived to <strong>the</strong> age of<br />
eighty seven, dy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1953 at Arvada.<br />
On Marriage<br />
TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR A HEALTHY MARRIAGE<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mak<strong>in</strong>g written by Richard Exley. It is a devotional <strong>for</strong> couples. You might want to hunt this<br />
book up and read it <strong>in</strong> its entirety. There is a section on each of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

off at all costs and spend <strong>the</strong>m toge<strong>the</strong>r as a<br />
couple and as a family.<br />

On Parent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

knees,….or go<strong>in</strong>g aside regularly, to keep ti<strong>me</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> Lord.<br />
“Let <strong>the</strong> <strong>hear</strong>t of <strong>the</strong>m rejoice that seek <strong>the</strong> Lord, seek <strong>the</strong> Lord and His strength; seek His face<br />
evermore” - Psalm 205:3,4<br />
“You must have a good <strong>hear</strong>t,” one man said to his child,” if you are go<strong>in</strong>g to act right <strong>in</strong> this<br />
world.” And <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong> illustrat<strong>in</strong>g his po<strong>in</strong>t he cont<strong>in</strong>ued, “Suppose my watch was <strong>not</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g ti<strong>me</strong><br />
very well. Would it do any good if I went to <strong>the</strong> town clock, and made <strong>the</strong> hands of my watch<br />
po<strong>in</strong>t exactly <strong>the</strong> sa<strong>me</strong> as those of <strong>the</strong> larger clock <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> square? No, of course <strong>not</strong>!! Soon my<br />
watch <strong>would</strong> be just as <strong>in</strong>accurate as be<strong>for</strong>e. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, I should take my watch to a watchmaker, or<br />
to a jewelry store that repairs watches. It is only when my watch has been cleaned and repaired<br />
that its hands will be able to keep ti<strong>me</strong> accurately all day long.”<br />
When we spend ti<strong>me</strong> <strong>in</strong> prayer, we are, <strong>in</strong> like manner, go<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Heart Maker, ask<strong>in</strong>g Him to<br />
“clean and repair our <strong>hear</strong>ts” from <strong>the</strong> damage caused by s<strong>in</strong>s we have committed. We are ask<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Him to put us right aga<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side, so that we can more clearly discern right from<br />
wrong. When our children see us do<strong>in</strong>g this, <strong>the</strong>y are much more likely to go to <strong>the</strong> Heart Maker<br />
when <strong>the</strong>y feel <strong>the</strong>ir own lives <strong>in</strong> disarray or “out of sync” – ra<strong>the</strong>r than turn to <strong>the</strong> world and reset<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir souls accord<strong>in</strong>g to its standards and priorities.<br />
There are many ways to <strong>me</strong>asure success; <strong>not</strong> <strong>the</strong> least of which is <strong>the</strong> way your child describes<br />
you when talk<strong>in</strong>g to a friend.<br />
Two little boys were discuss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir lives one day, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> various behavioral patterns of<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir parents. One boy f<strong>in</strong>ally asked, “Does your Daddy sit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> den a lot after he co<strong>me</strong>s ho<strong>me</strong><br />
from work?<br />
“No,” his friend replied, “he growls all over <strong>the</strong> place at our house.”
Your children <strong>not</strong> only have a candid op<strong>in</strong>ion about you, but <strong>the</strong>y are also likely to copy your<br />
behavior, both good and bad. Even if y our child doesn’t particularly like what you do—when<br />
asked objectively about it – he or she is likely to behave <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sa<strong>me</strong> way, unconsciously. A two<br />
year old might walk with a swagger just like Dad. A three year old is likely to use all <strong>the</strong> words<br />
his parent use, even <strong>the</strong> ones <strong>in</strong>appropriate <strong>for</strong> polite company! Above all, children imitate <strong>the</strong><br />
way <strong>the</strong>ir parents behave one to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
Three little girls were play<strong>in</strong>g house one day, tak<strong>in</strong>g turns play<strong>in</strong>g various roles, when one of <strong>the</strong>m<br />
said to ano<strong>the</strong>r, “Now you be <strong>the</strong> daddy.” The little girl pouted <strong>for</strong> a m<strong>in</strong>ute and <strong>the</strong>n said, “I<br />

“On Jordan’s Stormy Banks”<br />
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life <strong>for</strong> his friends,”<br />

Samuel Stennett, <strong>the</strong> Seventh Day Baptist who wrote “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks,” orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />
titled it “Heaven Anticipated,” a senti<strong>me</strong>nt that later com<strong>for</strong>ted a dy<strong>in</strong>g twenty one year old<br />
spy.<br />
Sam Davis was a student <strong>in</strong> Nashville when <strong>the</strong> Civil War broke out. He jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />
Confederate army and proved such a fearless soldier that he was selected <strong>for</strong> an elite group<br />
of spies na<strong>me</strong>d, “Coleman’s Scouts.” Sam excelled and an undercover agent. Once he even<br />
shared a table at Nashville’s ST. Cloud Hotel with General William Rosecrans, listen<strong>in</strong>g to a<br />
discussion of Yankee battle plans.<br />
In November, 1863, Sam was seized <strong>in</strong> Giles County, Tennessee, and thrown <strong>in</strong>to jail. The<br />
maps and papers under his saddle exposed him as a spy. His captors promised to spare<br />
his life if he <strong>would</strong> only reveal <strong>the</strong> identity of <strong>the</strong> mysterious “Coleman.”<br />
Sam refused, and it fell to Private C.B. Van Pelt to <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>m him of his sentence. “I read him a<br />
copy of his death sentence,” Van Pelt later said. “A reprieve was extended which I also read<br />
to him, if he <strong>would</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>m us where “Coleman” was. He stood be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>me</strong>, an uncrowned
hero, his eyes flash<strong>in</strong>g and said: “ I will die a thousand deaths ra<strong>the</strong>r than betray my<br />
friends.” We were both moved to tears and rema<strong>in</strong>ed silent <strong>for</strong> a ti<strong>me</strong>.”<br />
Unknown to <strong>the</strong> Yankee soldiers, ‘Coleman’ was really Dr. H.B. Shaw, who at that mo<strong>me</strong>nt<br />
was be<strong>in</strong>g held <strong>in</strong> an adjacent cell and who was later released.<br />
On <strong>the</strong> eve of his execution, Sam wrote to his dear mo<strong>the</strong>r, say<strong>in</strong>g: Oh how pa<strong>in</strong>ful it is to<br />
write you! I have got to die tomorrow morn<strong>in</strong>g—to be hanged by <strong>the</strong> Federals. Mo<strong>the</strong>r, do<br />
<strong>not</strong> grieve <strong>for</strong> <strong>me</strong>. I must bid you good-by <strong>for</strong>evermore.<br />
Chapla<strong>in</strong> Ja<strong>me</strong>s Young spent <strong>the</strong> day be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> hang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>pray<strong>in</strong>g</strong> with him. That night <strong>in</strong> a<br />
small worship service, Sam asked if <strong>the</strong>y <strong>would</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks.” Young later<br />
said he <strong>would</strong> never <strong>for</strong>get <strong>the</strong> young soldier’s animated voice as he sang; “I am bound <strong>for</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Promised Land; I am bound <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Promised Land.”<br />
Today <strong>the</strong>re is a monu<strong>me</strong>nt honor<strong>in</strong>g Sam Davis on <strong>the</strong> grounds of <strong>the</strong> Tennessee State<br />
Capitol. Underneath are <strong>the</strong> words: ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay<br />

always loved ra<strong>in</strong>bows so <strong>the</strong>se thoughts were especially <strong>me</strong>an<strong>in</strong>gful to <strong>me</strong>.)<br />
“Anyti<strong>me</strong> you stand fac<strong>in</strong>g a ra<strong>in</strong>storm with your back to bright low angle sunlight, that spectrum of colored<br />
light appears <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> clouds. White light enter<strong>in</strong>g a ra<strong>in</strong>drop divides <strong>in</strong>to a spectrum of colors. That light, reflected<br />
from <strong>the</strong> backside of ra<strong>in</strong>drops travels to your eye. The red co<strong>me</strong>s to you from <strong>the</strong> drops that create <strong>the</strong> top of<br />
<strong>the</strong> bright colored arc and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r colors are progressively lower—orange, yellow, green, blue, <strong>in</strong>digo and f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />
violet.<br />
The result<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>in</strong>bow is <strong>me</strong>ntioned <strong>in</strong> only six Bible verses. Three are <strong>in</strong> Genesis chapter n<strong>in</strong>e, culm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with verse 16, “Whenever <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow appears <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> clouds, I will see it…” O<strong>the</strong>r translations render this, “I will<br />
look upon it…” So whenever you are look<strong>in</strong>g at a ra<strong>in</strong>bow, know <strong>for</strong> sure you are <strong>not</strong> alone. There is a greater<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g and higher consciousness observ<strong>in</strong>g that ra<strong>in</strong>bow.<br />
It might be a little awkward to imag<strong>in</strong>e that you are just do<strong>in</strong>g so<strong>me</strong>th<strong>in</strong>g fun with God. However, take a<br />
leisurely look at a ra<strong>in</strong>bow and sense <strong>the</strong> presence of God <strong>the</strong>re do<strong>in</strong>g what He promised.<br />
Like <strong>the</strong> tree of life, <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow occurs <strong>in</strong> Genesis, revelation and only one Bible book <strong>in</strong> between. In 1:28,<br />
Ezekiel describes his vision of radiance like a ra<strong>in</strong>bow around <strong>the</strong> one on <strong>the</strong> heavenly throne.
With <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow be<strong>in</strong>g so scripturally tied to <strong>the</strong> presence of God, its radiance helps us perceive attributes<br />
of God. God can<strong>not</strong> be fully comprehended from earth, but <strong>the</strong> bow <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> clouds can help narrow <strong>the</strong> gap. Paul<br />
<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong><strong>me</strong>d us <strong>in</strong> Romans 1:20 that we can perceive attributes of God from <strong>the</strong> creation. This special relation of<br />
ra<strong>in</strong>bows on earth and <strong>in</strong> heaven to <strong>the</strong> presence of God puts <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> position to help us understand <strong>the</strong><br />
magnificence and glory of God. We co<strong>me</strong> closer to realiz<strong>in</strong>g why God splashed beauty throughout His creation and<br />
designed a creature <strong>in</strong> His image that can appreciate that beauty. God created <strong>the</strong> potential <strong>for</strong> color <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
electromagnetic field, created many animals equipped to perceive <strong>the</strong> color, and created us with <strong>the</strong> capacity to<br />
appreciate its beauty. And He placed <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cloud. The pathway to a<strong>the</strong>ism <strong>would</strong> be a little easier <strong>in</strong> a<br />
cosmos without ra<strong>in</strong>bows.<br />
A human fable imag<strong>in</strong>es a treasure at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow. With Ezekiel’s and John’s visions of heaven,<br />
it is revealed that what we need to be seek<strong>in</strong>g resides at <strong>the</strong> center of <strong>the</strong> endless ra<strong>in</strong>bow. So when you reach<br />
that po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> life where <strong>the</strong>re is no longer an opportunity to look at an earthly ra<strong>in</strong>bow, by <strong>the</strong> grace of God, you can<br />
step through <strong>the</strong> door to see a brilliant one encircl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> throne. And <strong>the</strong>re too is God.<br />
Our Nation’s Godly Heritage<br />
In a book which I have quoted be<strong>for</strong>e, I share so<strong>me</strong> excerpts from ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
section. This is from <strong>the</strong> chapter on Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple # 1 which is:<br />
“THE ONLY RELIABLE BASIS FOR SOUND GOVERNMENT AND JUST<br />
HUMAN RELATIONS IS NATURAL LAW.”<br />
“It may be surpris<strong>in</strong>g, even to A<strong>me</strong>ricans, to discover how much of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
Constitution and <strong>the</strong>ir life style is based on pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of Natural Law. For<br />

The concept of “unalienable rights” is based on Natural Law. (we talked<br />
about unalienable rights last month)<br />
The concept of Unalienable Duties is based on Natural Law.<br />

These few examples will illustrate how extensively <strong>the</strong> entire A<strong>me</strong>rican<br />
constitutional system is grounded <strong>in</strong> Natural Law. In fact Natural Law is <strong>the</strong><br />
foundation and encompass<strong>in</strong>g fra<strong>me</strong>work <strong>for</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g we have co<strong>me</strong> to call<br />
“People Law.”<br />
This is precisely what Thomas Jefferson was talk<strong>in</strong>g about when he wrote <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Declaration of Independence: “We hold <strong>the</strong>se truths to be self-evident, that all<br />
<strong>me</strong>n are created equal, that <strong>the</strong>y are endowed by <strong>the</strong>ir Creator with certa<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>alienable rights, that among <strong>the</strong>se are Life, Liberty and <strong>the</strong> Pursuit of Happ<strong>in</strong>ess.”<br />
These well re<strong>me</strong>mbered phrases from A<strong>me</strong>rica’s <strong>in</strong>itial charter of liberty are<br />
all primary pre-suppositions under <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of Natural Law.

to <strong>the</strong> world….founded on Godly pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by rely<strong>in</strong>g on God to guide and<br />
protect.<br />
May we <strong>not</strong> only be thankful to be a citizen of A<strong>me</strong>rica but may we be on our knees <strong>in</strong><br />
repentance and petitions <strong>for</strong> our apathy <strong>in</strong> allow<strong>in</strong>g it to fall so far from its <strong>in</strong>tended purpose and<br />
so far from those Godly pr<strong>in</strong>ciples on which it was founded. I urge all to spend more ti<strong>me</strong><br />
<strong>pray<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>for</strong> our nation, <strong>for</strong> guidance from above <strong>for</strong> us and all of <strong>the</strong> nation’s leaders, <strong>for</strong> all to<br />
move back to what God wants…<strong>not</strong> our selfish <strong>in</strong>terests.<br />
The writer of a small book called Pray <strong>for</strong> Our Nation, says this: Faith, courage, and<br />
prayer bir<strong>the</strong>d our great nation and guided A<strong>me</strong>rica through more than 200 years of wars,<br />
natural disasters and crisis.<br />
Prayer is a freedom guaranteed to us by our Constitution and a God given right to all<br />
humanity. He opportunity to pray is a privilege, honor and sacred duty.<br />
History has proven that <strong>for</strong>ces will wage war aga<strong>in</strong>st our freedom. Terrorism has shed<br />
blood on A<strong>me</strong>rican soil. Violent cri<strong>me</strong> has <strong>in</strong>vaded A<strong>me</strong>rican ho<strong>me</strong>s and schools. Drugs and<br />
alcohol abuse rage aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>nocence of our youth. Forces of darkness threaten our morality,<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrity and faith. Prayer <strong>for</strong> our nation is our defense.
Now is <strong>the</strong> ti<strong>me</strong> to be resolute <strong>in</strong> our defiance aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ces of destruction—to unite as<br />
a nation and <strong>not</strong> succumb to fear.<br />
A<strong>me</strong>ricans must stand strong and rema<strong>in</strong> bold <strong>in</strong> faith, courage and prayers.<br />
The nation needs your prayers. The President, his advisors, congress and all local and<br />
national leaders need your prayers. The ar<strong>me</strong>d <strong>for</strong>ces, firefighters and law en<strong>for</strong>ce<strong>me</strong>nt personnel<br />
need your prayers.<br />
Often people are unsure how to pray. It is <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>cerity of <strong>the</strong> <strong>hear</strong>t that determ<strong>in</strong>es a<br />
successful prayer, <strong>not</strong> <strong>the</strong> length, eloquence or level of vocabulary. Pray based on <strong>the</strong> scriptures so<br />
that you can pray <strong>in</strong> confidence, know<strong>in</strong>g you are <strong>pray<strong>in</strong>g</strong> God’s will <strong>for</strong> this nation.<br />
Commit to pray daily <strong>for</strong> your nation. Your Heavenly Fa<strong>the</strong>r is listen<strong>in</strong>g. He loves you and<br />
all <strong>in</strong> this nation.<br />
<strong>“If</strong> my people, which are called by my na<strong>me</strong>, shall humble <strong>the</strong>mselves, and pray, and seek<br />
my face, and turn from <strong>the</strong>ir wicked ways; <strong>the</strong>n will I <strong>hear</strong> from heaven, and will <strong>for</strong>give <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>in</strong>,<br />
and will heal <strong>the</strong>ir land.” - II Chronicles 7:14<br />
Re<strong>me</strong>mber to honor those who have given <strong>the</strong>ir all <strong>in</strong> service to our country….to keep our<br />
freedoms, both <strong>in</strong>dividual and as a nation, <strong>in</strong>tact. Re<strong>me</strong>mber <strong>the</strong>m and <strong>the</strong>ir families as we<br />
celebrate July 4 th …with all <strong>the</strong> “fun” th<strong>in</strong>gs that have beco<strong>me</strong> a part of how we celebrate this<br />
day. Enjoy <strong>the</strong> blood bought freedom to celebrate and have fun with family and friends….but do<br />
<strong>not</strong> <strong>for</strong>get <strong>the</strong> privileges we have ca<strong>me</strong> at great price paid by many over <strong>the</strong> centuries. And<br />
re<strong>me</strong>mber <strong>the</strong> ultimate price paid <strong>for</strong> us by our Lord that also set us free…..and that it is He who<br />
