Holmbridge’s history
stretches back 1868.
However, it’s the modern
day side, which play in the
Huddersfield Central
Cricket League that
interested us here at Cricket
Club Magazine. Martin
Gledhill is the clubs
Secretary and he spoke to
us last month.
“I’ve been a player at
Holmbridge for 16
years…. I think I initially I
got into the second team as
wicket keeper as I had my
own gloves! I have been the
club Secretary for the last 5
years, where I do the
majority of the paperwork
and correspondence. Plus I
administer the clubs
website www.
holmbridgecc.hitscricket.
com - I’m also the Club
Welfare Officer.”
“Youth Cricket… is
majorly important, if there
are no juniors coming
through the ranks then how
will the club survive going
forward? We have 3 junior
teams, including one girl’s
side. We have varying level
of qualified and nonqualified
coaches within
the club, all of whom are
invaluable assets to us.”
“As we are in the
Huddersfield…. Central
Cricket League, we are not
allowed to pay any players
to come to the club.
Therefore we remain one of
the smaller teams in the
area and still maintain close
connections to local
people.”
In the next 5
years I would
like the club
to ascertain
ECB Clubmark
accreditation.
It’s something
which we
have been
looking into
and want to
start working
towards.
“We are always looking
to improve… our facilities
at the club. The latest was
the renovation of the
shower area, which got
completely re-designed.
Then this was followed by
upgrading the kitchen/tea
room.”
“We started a girls’
team this season…. and
they have played a
selection of competitive
and friendly matches all
over Yorkshire. The lack of
opponents for them means
they have to travel quite
some distances to away
games. However, I think all
involved have enjoyed the
first year’s experiences
and I would hope they are
looking forward to summer
2011.”
“Our most recent….
successful juniors to break
into the adult teams have
been brothers. Opening
bowler Oliver Moorhouse
has recently left to play in
the higher standard in the
Huddersfield District
Cricket League. But his
slightly younger brother,
Ashley, is a very promising
17 year old batsman.
He is doing really well,
plays in the first team and is
a very good prospect for
the future. His late father,
Rob, used to play his
cricket at Holmbridge and

his uncle also used to play
and was the groundsman
for quite a few years.”
“In the next 5 years… I
would like the club to
ascertain ECB Clubmark
accreditation. It’s
something which we have
been looking into and want
to start working towards.
However, and more so, it’s
about continuing to grow
our junior members and
teams. After all they are the
future of the club.”
-The club competes at
and adult level in the
Huddersfi eld Central
Cricket League. The
fi rst team are in the
Premier Section and the
second XI is in section C.
Holmbridge has 2 junior
(open gender) teams which
play in the Huddersfi eld
Junior Cricket League,
plus a girl’s junior team
playing as often as they
can.
-On Sunday the 22nd Aug
this year the club did a
sponsored walk to raise
money both for club funds
and for the local Kirkwood
Hospice.

association with the club…
“I have been connected
with the club for
approximately six years
now since my neighbour
Scott Whitehead asked if
my son wanted to play with
the second team one
Saturday. I started
watching regularly and
was occasionally coerced
in to playing as well! I was
then asked by the then first
team Captain Mark
Beaumont if I would
become the full time scorer
for the first eleven, which I
still do today.
