Saturday Third XI versus Bearminster
Bournemouth is
believed to be one
of the largest cricket clubs
in the country and benefits
from high quality facilities
at its Bournemouth Sports
Club home. With four
pitches and two pavilions
(one constructed with the
help of a £50,000 grant
from the ECB’s Community
Club Development Fund)
the club is of an ample
enough size to cater for an
ever growing youth section.
Cricket Club Magazine
spoke to their Chairman
Rob Coombs and his wife
and Colts Secretary Jill
Coombs over the summer
to find out more about the
Dorset side who have just
won the ECB Southern
Premier League Division 1.
Rob Coombs
“Our recent success
has… been down to some
great team spirit and a
good set of youngsters
coming through. Everyone
is contributing and our
huge youth section, which
involves fourteen sides
from under 9’s up to under
16’s are showing some
tremendous progress”
“We are in a fairly
complicated… situation
because we are a multi
sports club which means
we are just one section of a
larger establishment.
Positively, it’s a huge site
which has astro hockey
pitches and hosts a rugby
club. We are all fighting to
keep going and sometimes
have issues over facilities,
but generally things work
well!”
“I’m not a great fan… of
‘Chance2shine’. I realise it
reaches many youngsters
and raises the profile of the
game, but I’m not sure
about the quality of
cricketers it brings through.
Of the many youth
members we have, I can
count on one hand the
players who have come
through the scheme.
However, we’ve a very
good relationship with the
ECB and have received
Clubmark status.”
“Dimitri Mascarenhas
has played for us… We’ve
a fairly large ground but I
can still recall him hitting
the ball into the car park!”
“In the future I would
like… to see us maintain
the high standards we have
at the moment. Lots of
people who have got us into
our good position at the
moment are getting a little
tired and it’s certainly time
for some new blood to take
over and step forward. One
challenge we have is
bringing in some fresh
energy. Being an out of
town club means finding
volunteers is getting ever
harder.”
Jill Coombs
“I do lots of
administration… in
support of the club in my
role as Colts Secretary.
Over the years I’ve
gradually got involved in
support of Rob and my sons
who are involved at the
club. I spend lots of my time
on the computer and
chasing match fees!
The Colts section has had
I hate
losing and
cricket
being my
first love,
once I
enter the
ground it’s
a different
zone
altogether
and that
hunger for
winning is
always
there.
Sachin
Tendulkar
a very good summer. We’ve
had more turn up on
Tuesdays and many are
starting to come along at a
very young age. Added to
that, a couple of girls came
along recently. We will
move into the indoor centre
in September and the
process starts all over
again! Most of our
volunteers are parents of
the colts and we rely
heavily on their great
support.”

Cornish side St Just’s
Secretary is Chris
Goninan. He spoke to
Cricket Club Magazine over
the summer about his time
at the club, the changes he
has witnessed during his
long association and the
recent addition of Solar
panelling on their pavilion.
Changes…
“I started going along to
the club to practice when I
was eleven and this is my
second spell as Secretary
after I re-joined the club in
1984.When I was youngster
I saw Penzance as our
area’s Lord’s, the whole
atmosphere was fantastic
and it was always full to the
brim.
In those days we were
lacking in facilities but
since 1986, when we had a
new scoreboard put up,
things have moved at a
pace and every single year
until now, something
significant has happened
on the ground! It reached a
climax in 2004 when the
new pavilion was opened.
The ten year project cost
just over £500,000, was
funded by Sport England,
and provides a fantastic
facility for the club.
Since then, we’ve had
new practice nets put in via
the Community Club
Development Fund and
the pitch has been fully
re-seeded and re- planted.
We’ve worked hard for it
because you don’t get
money like that for sitting
on your backside.”
Dedication…
“St Just as a town only has
a population of around
2,500 and we are still able
to put out four cricket
teams every Saturday. We
used to be one of the
weaker sides that made
up the Cornwall Cricket
League as it once was and
then in the mid 80’s, when
promotion and relegation
came in and the league
became one complete
county division we
managed to scrape in.
With the help of a certain
West Indian by the name
of Livingston Lawrence we
then became Champions
of the League in 1990 for
the first time since 1926!”
Administration…
“I’ve always found that
the administration
required of clubs such as
ours is far more than most
people realise. We are
amateurs at the lower end
of the loop doing our best
to keep cricket going in
our areas.
The grants we’ve
received have been made
possible by sheer hard
work because we wouldn’t
have got the money if we
were not compliant and
didn’t adhere to good
practice as its set down
from the authorities. It is
however, I believe, getting
harder and harder for us to
find the people to do the
paper work that is
required.”
More Positively…
“The ECB have put Cricket
Development Officers into
each county to make the
process a little easier. I
believe the ‘Chance2shine’
scheme and ‘Kwik Cricket’
are two of the major things
that have made the game
far more sustainable in
Schools.
We’ve been involved with
Chance2shine for four years
and go into Primary and
Secondary Schools in the
area and I believe the
scheme has raised the
games profile remarkably
since 2005.”
Solar Panels…
“We’ve Solar Panels on
our Pavilion. They went up
in 2008 with the help of the
Low Carbon Building
phase program which is a
government initiative
which gave us 50% of the
funding. The other half of
the £24,000 project was
funded by the ECB’s Green
grant and some funds from
within the club. They’ve
been a fantastic addition
and we are already seeing
financial benefits. We are
also currently exploring
the idea of water
harvesting.”
