Falkland Cricket Club, Enborne Street, Wash Common, Newbury, Berkshire RG14 6TW
T: 01635 47658 W: www.pitchero.com/clubs/falkland
Go on, admit it. If I
asked you for your
first image of ‘Falkland
Cricket Club’, it would most
probably be of hardy
farmers braving a South
Atlantic wind so ferocious,
that the wicket keeper
would be standing at 4th
slip, and the fast bowler
would have to complete his
run up on a motor bike,
wouldn’t it? The truth is that
the Falkland C.C of your
image, is as far removed
from the Falkland Cricket
Club of reality, as far as,
well, 20/20 is from Test
cricket.
The club is actually
situated near Newbury, and
not at Mid On to Argentina.
Although it is worth noting,
that the club did actually
compete against their
colder counterparts in
March 2009, on the
Falkland Islands. They
successfully kept their feet,
to record a victory and
retain the Stanley Services
Cup. Not many victorious
teams are awarded tea in
the Governor’s Mansion
after a cricket match either!
The name Falkland in this
context though, is
reasonably confidently
attached to a Lord Falkland
who fell in the Battle of
Newbury in 1643,
(apparently Geoff Boycott
was just approaching his
first half century, 250 miles
north). The club took his
name in 1895, superseding
the original ‘Wash Common
C.C’ of 1884.
As with many ‘village’
clubs, Falkland C.C is a
true community club. As
well as the 4 ‘X1’s, it also
boasts a burgeoning youth
set up, the club is also a
social hub for the
surrounding area. Much of
this success can be
attributed to the Neate
family who began their
long association with the
club in 1938.
The family still hold a
nominal stake in the club,
in one of the club’s two
venues. Another
notification of the progress
of the club came in 2007,
when they were awarded
the coveted, Sport England,
Full Clubmark
Accreditation.
This season Falkland
has just won the HCPL
Division 2 West for the
second time and, in
doing so return to the
top fl ight of club cricket.
On what was a fi ne day
they defeated Slough
to overtake Reading
and celebrations were
enhanced with the news
that the 2nd XI had
defeated Tring to maintain
their Level 2B status.
There was
a slight
interruption
there for
athletics.
Cricket Club Magazine
about a positive link with
Falkland.
“I’ve been involved with
Falkland CC personally for
thirty eight years and I still
play for the 4th team on a
Saturday. Our involvement
has meant we’ve helped
the club grow from being a
village club on the edge of
town to being one of the
major clubs in the area
which also now stages
Minor Counties
Championship games.
Continued improvement
programs have seen the
facility extended and the
purchase of a second
ground. There are also
Cricket Club Magazine speaks to
Winston Carlisle - Sportsturf
further plans for installing
new nets and upgrading the
square on the main ground.
All of these moves have,
helped, and will continue
to help, the club to be a
truly Premier League set
up. As a company, FTS are
keen to continue our
positive association and
help them with further
ground improvements. Into
the future, we’d also be
keen to level the outfield.
Both the square and the
outfield have evolved
naturally from what was an
agricultural field in the
1920’s, it’s not a ground that
was built from scratch but
has been developed
gradually. We want to
continue that process and
make it an even better
facility.”
