All the Bills introduced in the <strong>Assembly</strong> were published in the <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong><br />
<strong>Government</strong> Gazette after introduction only.<br />
Out of 275 <strong>Government</strong> Bills introduced during the period, 273 Bills were<br />
passed by the <strong>Legislative</strong> <strong>Assembly</strong> one was lapsed due to the dissolution of<br />
the <strong>Assembly</strong> and another one was withdrawn by leave of the House. Out of 273<br />
Bills passed, 264 Bills were assented to and became law. The following are<br />
some of the important pieces of Legislation:<br />
1. The City of Madras (Alteration of Name) Act, 1996<br />
This Legislation was enacted to alter the name of Madras, keeping in view<br />
the universal acceptance of the name “Chennai” based on its historical, social,<br />
cultural and other details.<br />
2. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act, 1997<br />
This Act brought all the Law Colleges and Institutions which were affiliated<br />
to various Universities in <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> within a single University namely, the<br />
<strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Dr. Ambedkar Law University for greater improvement in the field<br />
of Law.<br />
3. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Private Clinical Establishments (Regulation) Act, 1997<br />
This Act was enacted to regulate and curtail the mushroom growth of private<br />
hospitals, nursing homes and other clinical establishments in unorganised and<br />
haphazard manner in <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong>.<br />
4. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997<br />
This Act prohibits the menace of Ragging in the Society.<br />

5. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Protection of Interests of Depositors (in Financial<br />
Establishments) Act, 1997<br />
This Act regulates the financial establishments not covered by the Reserve<br />
Bank of India Act, 1934 in <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> since these financial establishments<br />
received deposits from the public, mostly middle class and poor and defaulted to<br />
return these deposits on maturity to the public.<br />
6. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Industrial Township Area Development Authority Act, 1997<br />
This Act provides for constitution of an authority called the “Industrial<br />
Township Area Development Authority” for speedy and orderly establishment<br />
and development of industries in <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong>.<br />
7. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Right to Information Act, 1997<br />
This Act provides for the right of access to information about the<br />
administration and to enable the public to get the details about the <strong>Government</strong><br />
schemes or works implemented or executed by various departments, the quantity<br />
of rice and other essential commodities supplied to each of the shops under<br />
Public Distribution System and to pave the way for the people to question<br />
irregularities in the system.<br />
8. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Siddha System of Medicine (Development and<br />
Registration of Practitioners) Act, 1997<br />
This Act provides for the development of the Siddha System of Medicine<br />
and for the regulation of the practioners of the Siddha Medicine in the State of<br />
<strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong>.<br />
9. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Acquisition of Land for Industrial Purposes Act, 1997<br />
This was enacted for the acquisition of land for quick establishment of<br />
industries for the speedy industrial growth of this State.<br />
10. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Animals and Birds in Urban Areas (Control and<br />
Regulation) Act, 1997<br />
This Act provides for prohibition of animals and birds’ keeping in urban<br />
areas like Chennai in <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong>, and in parts of urban areas as may be notified<br />
by the <strong>Government</strong>.<br />
11. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Lifts Act, 1997<br />
This Act regulates erection, maintenance and safe working of lifts in<br />
<strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong>.<br />
12. The <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Urban Local Bodies Act, 1999<br />
This is a comprehensive Legislation applicable to all Urban Local Bodies in<br />
the State.
