of the competitors, too, of course. But, although the time was taken<br />

at this spot, just outside the Stadium, the competitors had to ride on<br />

into the Stadium through the principal entrance, turn to the left and<br />

cycle half a lap along the running track, where they would be met<br />

by their countrymen and assistants.<br />

In order to render the greatest possible assistance to the competitors,<br />

and especially to those that were unacquainted with the Swedish<br />

language, the leader of the competition drew up a P. M. which was<br />

printed in English, French, German and Swedish editions, and given<br />

to the various competitors in the language they best understood. This<br />

P. M. contained all the information the competitor needed to be able<br />

to be present at the right time at the starting place, etc., and was<br />

as follows :<br />

The competition will take place on Sunday, July 7th ; the first man starting<br />

at 2 a. m.<br />

The medical examination, which is obligatory for everyone taking part in the<br />

race, will take place on Saturday, July 6th, from 2 p. m., at the Primary<br />

School, 63—65 Valhallavägen, near the Stadium.<br />

You are requested to present yourself for this examination at p. m.<br />

The start will take place on the high road in front of the schoolhouse, 1,000<br />

metres (ca. mile) south of Liljeholmsbro (L. bridge), which is situated on the<br />

south-west outskirts of Stockholm.<br />

Your number in the competition is<br />

You must present yourself at the starting-post not later than a. m.<br />

After dressing for the race, unnecessary clothing will be left in charge of the<br />

starter’s adjutant (who wears a brown and blue badge on his arm), who will<br />

transport each competitor’s things, enclosed in a separate sack marked with the<br />

name of the competitor, to the dressing room of his nation in the Stadium.<br />

Each competitor shall wear, both on his breast and back, the number which<br />

has been assigned to him by lot.<br />

Your starting-time in the race is a. m.<br />

Your reserve-machines have been stationed by the Committee at<br />

At the start and the finish, the competitors must not be assisted by anybody<br />

else than persons approved of by the Committee (“start-helpers”).<br />

The words of command on starting are:<br />

30 sec. before the start : “Sitt upp!”<br />

“Färdigza!” (Ready !), and<br />

on the stroke of time: “Gå!” (Go !)<br />

All pacing by persons who are not taking part in the race is strictly forbidden,<br />

and no person not taking part in the competition will be allowed to<br />

accompany the competitor.<br />

Refreshments must only be given by persons on foot.<br />

During the race the competitor shall keep to the left, and shall ring his bell.<br />

or other signal, in good time, to warn anyone coming in the opposite direction.<br />

In the case of a competitor being, necessitated against his will, to wait at the<br />

canal-bridges at Fittja, Södertälje, Eskilstuna, Kungsör, Kolbäck, Stäket or<br />

Ålkistan, the time he has lost at any of these places, in order to allow of<br />

the passage of a boat, will be deducted from his total time.<br />

Such a deduction will not be made, however, for a delay caused at any of<br />

the railway crossings.<br />

At the control station at Köping, you must sign your name on the list kept<br />

there, in order to show that you have passed the place.<br />

Refreshments can be had at all the control stations.<br />

If you retire from the competition, you are bound to give notice of the fact<br />

at the nearest control station as soon as you can, and also to take off your<br />

number.<br />
