WESTRACE® Mk2
Input/Output Modules (IOMs)
WESTRACE Mk2 is the latest generation of Computer
Based Interlocking (CBI) from Invensys Rail. Building
on the success of previous WESTRACE equipment,
Mk2 offers increased capacity, speed, flexibility and
configurable redundancy, whilst maintaining SIL4 Safety.
A range of WESTRACE Mk2 Input/Output Modules
(IOMs) are available which may be used together
with the WESTRACE Mk2 Processor Module (PM) to
construct a wide variety of vital logic systems tailored
to the specific needs of the railway industry.
The IOMs can also be configured to be used with our
WESTLOCK system.
Range
The range includes:
• Parallel Input Module
• Lamp Output Module
• Relay Output Module
and...
• Signal Operating Module
• Point Operating Module
• Coded Input Module
Pedigree
• Latest evolution of proven WESTRACE system.
• Over 1,200 applications in service worldwide – wide
variety of applications including rural, suburban, high
speed, ERTMS, and metro lines.
Architecture
• ‘2 out of 2’ architecture.
• Full compliance with CENELEC SIL4.
• IOMs can be co-located with PM, or spread out
up to 40km away over high speed fibre link.
Hardware
• Wide range of I/O Modules for connectivity to signals,
point machines, track circuits, axle counters, etc.
• Each IOM contains a common core together with
appropriate field circuitry.
• Common core based on a ‘2 out of 2’ Field
Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) core with module
specific field circuitry.
• No external protection or filtering required, system
designed for direct connection to objects.
• Indicators provided on the front of all modules to
repeat the state of outputs/inputs.
• ‘Hot-Swap’ function allows cards to be changed
without powering down the housing.

Performance
• FPGA based IOMs for optimum processing speed.
Environmental
• Temperature range -40°C to +70°C
• Humidity up to 95% non-condensing
Details of the IO modules currently available
Parallel Input Module (PIM)
The PIM is designed to detect twelve 50V dc inputs
The inputs are all fully isolated and can either be used
singly as 2-state inputs or they can be connected together
in pairs in a reverse parallel configuration as bipolar
inputs.
This isolation also allows the corresponding outputs in hot
standby pairs to be wired in parallel.
Each input stage contains two voltage to frequency
converters, with different frequency ranges. The
frequencies are detected and cross-checked by the
FPGAs to determine the inputs.
Lamp Output Module (LOM)
The LOM designed to drive and power six 110V ac lamps.
All the outputs are capable of flashing as well as steady
operation. Also a red retaining function is provided which
can be used to ensure the signal is driven to its most
restrictive state following module shutdown.
Each output stage uses semiconductor switches, with a
PCB mounted relay driven by dynamic waveforms from
both channels to cut feed and return if the module fails.
This latter also ensures that corresponding outputs in hot
standby pairs can be wired parallel.
Relay Output Module (ROM)
The ROM is designed to drive relay outputs such as
standard BR930/960 series relays.
Eight fully isolated outputs are available on a single card.
The outputs are all fully floating and can either be used
as two state outputs, or connected together in pairs in
a reverse parallel configuration as bipolar outputs.
Each output stage uses a pair of dynamically driven
MOSFET switches, driven by separate channels on the
card, to switch the output. The operation of the switches
is monitored using analogue to digital converters and the
integrity of the switches is tested periodically by injecting
test signals while the output is de-energised.
Signal Operating Module (SOM)
The SOM is designed to drive a wide range of filament
and LED signals and their ancillary equipment without the
need for additional equipment.
It is provided with up to 10 lamp driving outputs and
similar input capabilities to the CIM
The outputs are current proved, with individually
configurable thresholds. Flashing and ‘red retaining’
functions are provided.
The module will also provide direct interface to both
TPWS and AWS systems without external circuitry.
Point Operating Module (POM)
The POM will drive and detract a range of different DC
point machines directly with no external relays.
Coded Input Module (CIM)
The CIM contains twelve fully isolated bi-polar inputs
for detraction of voltage free contracts.
The inputs use coded
supplies to provide a high
level of immunity against
noise and interference
from external sources
including both ac & dc
traction systems.
