They continued to work on their training and build on their actual derby skills. Eventually, a training committee was formed and small teams were chosen. It was time to recruit more girls and bring on a team of referees and support staff. With a booth at the Slam City Jam, and a shared booth with the already formed Edmonton Oil City Derby Girls at the 2006 Calgary Tattoo Convention, they were able to find some new recruits and begin practicing real game play. One year of practicing later, the Calgary Roller Derby Association hosted their first friends and family bout. They hosted two of these events at the Triwood Arena and Legacy sports to adjust to playing of a crowd. The teams that existed at this time were the Thrashin’ Lassies, the Cut Throat Car Hops and the Girl Grinders. The league’s first public game took place at the 2007 Tattoo Convention in teams that were mixed from girls on all three teams who had made their skating benchmarks. The mixed teams that were formed that day were the Bloody Marys and the Black Sabbathas. After that, the league started to gain their footing in Calgary and started hosting regular practices at Legacy Sports in the winter and the Triwood Arena in the summer months. It quickly became apparent that the league was not large enough quite yet to support three teams, and the decision was made to absorb the Girl Grinders in to the other two existing teams. The original two teams, the Thrashin’ Lassies and the Cut Throat Car Hops, are still in play today. In the first season, the Car Hops dominated and won every game of the season except for the finale. In the final game, the Lassies came out on top. The second season saw the creation of a third team to accommodate all of the new members that had hit their benchmarks. This team was called the Bella Bombshellas, which morphed in to the Blitzkrieg Bellas, and eventually settled in to the name they go by today, the B-52 Bellas. In the second season, the reverse of the first season happened. The Thrashin’ Lassies dominated until their final game, where they lost to the Cut Throat Car Hops. They still took the title of season champions. The B-52 Bellas would not go down without a win though- they beat the Car Hops in their final game of the season. The Thrashin Lassies came back strong in the 2009/2010 season and were undefeated during regular season play. The championship game saw 3 first string players from the B-52 Bellas supplementing the ranks of the Cut throat Car Hops to give the Lassies a run for their money. After a very close and physical game, the Lassies clinched the championship, securing their undefeated streak.
Along with a rigorous practice schedule and regular game play, the league also attends boot camps lead primarily by derby connections in the United States. CRDA now has a travel team, Hellion Rebellion, which is a compilation of the all-stars from the house teams and have seen play in Vancouver, B.C., Victoria, B.C., Edmonton, AB, Tacoma, WA, and Spokane, WA. The Calgary Roller League has been instrumental in helping other emerging leagues get their footing and learn skills essential to the game of roller derby. Along with the Terminal City Rollergirls in Vancouver and the Oil City Derby Girls in Edmonton, the Calgary Roller Derby Association has been one of the flagship leagues to bring the sport to where it is today in Western Canada. The Calgary Roller Derby Association has premiered their league to Calgary at various venues including Legacy Sports, the Triwood Arena, the Corral, the Round-Up Centre, the Big 4 Building, and the Tsuu Tina Sportsplex. Calgarians can also expect to see the rollergirls on the streets, skate parks and bike paths around town as spring comes about. In the 2011 season, the Calgary Roller Derby Association expects to continue their unprecedented growth. Their recruiting events see amazing turn-outs, and their fundraising game in March had a larger than expected crowd, raising over $2000 for the SPCA. As they move forward in to the future, the Calgary Roller Derby Association hopes to raise their profile in the city and become a larger, more competitive league with a strong fan base, and maybe even realize their dream of becoming a member league of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.
