Art & Sarah Ludwick: Building life around love for family and the community by Heidi Ludwick Hanson W hen I first heard about the Arthur and Sarah Ludwick Emergency Care Pavilion, I thought what an appropriate tribute to two people who have likely positively affected the lives of everyone in Glendora. We are blessed in Glendora to have many citizens who give generously to our community, but my parents are certainly at the top of the list having given so much of their time and money over the years to education, health, recreation, child care, and sports in our community. My parents came from different backgrounds, but were raised with many of the same values (such as the importance of hard work, family, and serving the community). Dad spent most of his childhood moving around the state as work became available for his father at the local lumber yards. Mom spent her childhood in Glendora with her parents who both worked full-time as entrepreneurs building a local sprinkler manufacturing business – Rain Bird. The two were first introduced through my uncle when dad and Uncle Tony attended college together at Stanford University. But dad and mom did not date until several years later, when mom was in college and dad had relocated to Glendora to work with Uncle Tony for Rain Bird. The two were married in 1965 shortly after mom graduated from Scripps College. Over the next five years, mom and dad expanded the family with the birth of my sister Sharon, brother Erik, and me. Growing up a Ludwick meant spending a great deal of time by my parents’ side providing community service. I remember many Saturdays at Bidwell School helping my parents load trucks full of newspapers during the PTA’s newspaper drive, or helping keep tables organized during the school book fair. We also used to hang out doing our homework in the afternoons and occasional evenings at the YWCA offices (now the Chamber of Commerce) while my mom attended meetings. During the summer, my mom would take us down to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital and have us hang out in the cafeteria while she helped prepare meals for Meals on Wheels, or we would head down to the Legion Hall to visit and play games with the stroke survivors at the Organization for After-Stroke Rehabilitation events. We would also be recruited to help my mom with vacation bible school, either preparing crafts for her classes, cooking snacks, or serving as an extra set of hands in the classroom. Dad spent his free time coaching sports. Although all of us participated in several sports, Erik was fortunate enough to have dad coach him in both baseball and soccer. But, my dad’s coaching days started well before any of us were born. As a little girl, I remember the Fuller brush salesman coming by our house a couple times each year and telling us how much he enjoyed having my dad as a coach when he played baseball. My dad really enjoyed helping the kids to learn the sports, improve their skills, and experience the fun of competition, and he definitely spread his enthusiasm to all the kids he coached in Glendora. What I remember most fondly of our family time in community service were the years in high school when all of us were in Key Club. My dad served as our Kiwanis advisor and my mom generously let us have our weekly club ART & SARAH LUDWICK � www.foothillfoundation.org SUMMER/FALL 2007 3
