Art & Sarah Ludwick:
Building life around love
for family and the community
by Heidi Ludwick Hanson
W
hen I first heard about the Arthur and Sarah
Ludwick Emergency Care Pavilion, I thought what
an appropriate tribute to two people who have
likely positively affected the lives of everyone in Glendora.
We are blessed in Glendora to have many citizens who
give generously to our community, but my parents are
certainly at the top of the list having given so much of
their time and money over the years to education, health,
recreation, child care, and sports in our community.
My parents came from different backgrounds, but were
raised with many of the same values (such as the
importance of hard work, family, and serving the
community). Dad spent most of his childhood moving
around the state as work became available for his father
at the local lumber yards. Mom spent her childhood in
Glendora with her parents who both worked full-time as
entrepreneurs building a local sprinkler manufacturing
business – Rain Bird.
The two were first introduced through my uncle when dad
and Uncle Tony attended college together at Stanford
University. But dad and mom did not date until several
years later, when mom was in college and dad had
relocated to Glendora to work with Uncle Tony for Rain
Bird. The two were married in 1965 shortly after mom
graduated from Scripps College. Over
the next five years, mom and dad
expanded the family with the birth of
my sister Sharon, brother Erik, and me.
Growing up a Ludwick meant spending
a great deal of time by my parents’ side
providing community service. I
remember many Saturdays at Bidwell
School helping my parents load trucks
full of newspapers during the PTA’s
newspaper drive, or helping keep tables
organized during the school book fair.
We also used to hang out doing our
homework in the afternoons and
occasional evenings at the YWCA offices
(now the Chamber of Commerce) while
my mom attended meetings. During the
summer, my mom would take us down
to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital and
have us hang out in the cafeteria while
she helped prepare meals for Meals on
Wheels, or we would head down to the
Legion Hall to visit and play games with
the stroke survivors at the Organization
for After-Stroke Rehabilitation events.
We would also be recruited to help my
mom with vacation bible school, either
preparing crafts for her classes, cooking
snacks, or serving as an extra set of
hands in the classroom.
Dad spent his free time coaching sports.
Although all of us participated in several
sports, Erik was fortunate enough to
have dad coach him in both baseball
and soccer. But, my dad’s coaching days
started well before any of us were born.
As a little girl, I remember the Fuller
brush salesman coming by our house a
couple times each year and telling us
how much he enjoyed having my dad as
a coach when he played baseball. My
dad really enjoyed helping the kids to
learn the sports, improve their skills,
and experience the fun of competition,
and he definitely spread his enthusiasm
to all the kids he coached in Glendora.
What I remember most fondly of our
family time in community service were
the years in high school when all of us
were in Key Club. My dad served as our
Kiwanis advisor and my mom
generously let us have our weekly club
ART & SARAH LUDWICK
 ART & SARAH LUDWICK
meetings at the house. Keep in mind that our club had more
than 50 members, so our family room was packed with
teenage kids. I can’t count the number of times we took over
the family room and patio, painting posters for all of the Key
Club events. My mom never got mad when we spilled paint
on her rug (that happened quite a few times). My parents
were by our side at all the activities, conventions, and service
projects we held, helping make the club a success.
But my parents supported more than just our activities in
school. Mom was very active in the anti-smoking program and
DARE. She also worked in the career center helping students
find colleges or career options. My mom was always around
school, and all of our friends and teachers knew her. She
knew that all of her volunteering would give her a chance to
keep an eye on us, and we all made sure not to do anything
to get us into trouble because she would find out about it.
Education was very important to my parents. They always
took time to help us out with our homework, and my mom
made it a priority to proofread every paper we wrote
throughout school. But my parents always looked to ways to
improve our education and prepare us for future technologies.
During junior high, I attended a summer school class on
BASIC computer programming that my dad had established
at Citrus College. At the time, Citrus was the only school in
the Glendora area with computers and, for most of us, it was
the first time we had worked on a computer.
Computers continued to be absent from our school
curriculum, and I only remember two classrooms throughout
my high school years that had computers. My parents
understood that Glendora’s students needed computer
education to prepare them for college and future careers.
They continued to advocate the importance of computers in
the classroom for more than a decade after we graduated
from Glendora Unified School District. Their success is
apparent today as you wander through the schools and find
computers available to students in the classrooms and
libraries, and included in the schools’ curriculum.
Back in the early 1980s, my dad – through Rain Bird – worked
with the City of Glendora to create a summer concert series in
the park. During the first few years, the performers sat up on
a stage the city constructed before each event. Of course, the
first few years the bands were for the most part concert
bands and always played a rendition of “Stars and Stripes
Forever” (much to my dad’s delight). The concerts proved to
be a success and, to this day, continue to be a part of
Glendora’s summer culture.
When we were all out of the house, my mom decided to go
back to college and get a master’s degree in child
development. She had always had a dream of running her
own child care center, and was fortunate to find that the
University of La Verne had a child care center in conjunction
with Fairplex. She began volunteering her time at the center.
4
Art & Sarah Ludwick
My mom helped develop an annual auction for the Fairplex
Child Development Center that, today, continues to raise
more than $150,000 each year toward their operating budget.
She also spent several years on the Center’s board of
directors, helping establish it as one of the premier child care
centers in our area.
In more recent
years, my dad has
joined the Fairplex
Board of Directors.
In the last few
years, the Fairplex
foundations have
developed a
program called the
Yellow Bus
Program. My dad
has worked with
many generous
contributors in
Glendora to raise
funds for buses
that take Glendora
school children to
Sarah and Art Ludwick take an evening joy
the fair during the
ride in their fun car to the 2006 Morris L.
school day to
Johnston, M.D. reception.
experience all of
the Fair’s learning opportunities. The program is a big success
with the kids and continues to grow each year.
My mom is currently on the boards of directors for the
University Educational Trust and Partners in Education at Cal
Poly University, Pomona – both of which provide student
scholarships and promote the advancement of education.
I really admire my parents for the endless hours they have
devoted to our community, despite the challenges they have
faced. My mom was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid
arthritis when she was in her early 30s, and continues to
suffer from it today. I remember many days when my mom
could not get out of bed to drive us to school in the morning
because she was in such severe pain. But I never remember
my mom missing a commitment she had made, and I’m
certain she hurt a great deal during many of her volunteer
hours. She just never let anyone know that she wasn’t feeling
great that day. To this day, my mom continues to commit to
projects for Kiwaniannes, Fairplex CDC, the YWCA, and other
organizations that are physically demanding. She’ll always get
through the day with a smile, and rarely listens to anyone
who tells her to sit down – even for a minute – given there is
always work to be done.
My parents have been part of, or lead, many other groups
through the years, including Kiwanis, Citrus College
HEALTHWISE FOOTHILL PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL

The Arthur and Sarah Ludwick
Emergency Care Pavilion:
Bringing enhanced and efficient emergency care
to Glendora and beyond by Joan McBride
Did you know that more than 100 million
Americans – about one in every three of us – visit
a hospital emergency room each year? During the
next 12 months, there’s a great likelihood that you or
someone close to you will seek urgent care in one of our
nation’s emergency rooms.
Yet the emergency care experience is nearly always
fraught with stress and delays. Interminable waits in the
lobby. Sitting around while your lab work is processed.
Waiting, waiting, waiting while wondering about the
status of your health.
Fortunately, Foothill Presbyterian Hospital is doing its part
to change the typical emergency room experience.
During the past five years, the local community has
invested more than $14 million in FPH’s new emergency
department. That new facility, the Arthur and Sarah
Ludwick Emergency Care Pavilion, is scheduled to open
its doors in October. And, as you’ll see, it will provide the
latest in emergency department technology for the
residents of our community.
The Arthur and Sarah Ludwick
Emergency Care Pavilion is an
independent structure, allowing us to
meet the State’s new seismic safety
requirements. The differences between
the new and old emergency department
are immediately evident — the new
facility has a separate ambulance
entrance from the walk-in entrance.
And there are 49 new parking spaces
immediately adjacent to the new facility
for convenient parking.
Upon arrival, patients will wait in one
of two waiting areas, as opposed to the
current facility’s single waiting area.
One area has a section especially for
children. There is also an outdoor area
adjacent to the waiting rooms to “catch
a breath of fresh air.” Patients will be
greeted and escorted to an emergency
room bed as soon as possible after
arrival, with triage and registration
taking place at the bedside (currently,
non-critical patients are not placed in
an emergency room bed until after
registration takes place).
The open ceilings and high windows
allow natural sunlight to enter the
department – a refreshing change from
the glare of fluorescent lighting. at
night, light will be visible from the
Pavilion, serving as a lantern or beacon
to help patients find the emergency
department with ease.
EMERGENCY CARE PAVILION
 EMERGENCY CARE PAVILION
The new facility will more than double our capacity by
providing beds for 23 emergency room patients, compared to
the 11 spaces in our current facility. Included among these 23
beds are six closed treatment rooms for patients that require
a quieter environment, or for pediatric patients undergoing
procedures.
The Pavilion also features two isolation rooms for patients
with highly contagious infections, such as SARS and
tuberculosis. Use of the isolation rooms will also help keep
fellow patients – and staff – safe from these infectious
diseases.
The specialty care room, which also has two beds, is for the
highest acuity patients that require care from the entire
health care team. This area has an alcove with all the
equipment needed for more sophisticated procedures, such as
inserting a chest tube or placing a patient on a ventilator.
The remaining 13 emergency room beds (or treatment bays)
will be used for a variety of emergency room cases. These
rooms are not specialized, but a specialty cart brought to the
bedside can turn any treatment bay into a specialized “room.”
The new facility also features a physicians’ dictation and
picture archiving and communications system (PACS) room.
Admitting physicians will now have a private place to sit down
and write orders. And our PACS will allow our physicians to
view X-rays from the new emergency room’s computers,
rather than waiting for film delivery from the radiology
department.
A “stat lab” located within the department will be used to
process blood work. Results will be returned in half the time
of the hospital laboratory.
While the aesthetics and technical features of the new
emergency department will provide each patient with
enhanced medical care, the improved patient flow system
introduced in the new center will provide a faster, more
efficient and more comfortable experience for each
emergency department patient.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the
thousands of donors who provided the majority of funding
required to make this new facility a reality. Thanks to
everyone who supported the Arthur and Sarah Ludwick
Emergency Care Pavilion for investing in the health of your
community. We applaud you!
Build charitable giving into your
estate plan
M
ost Americans who give to charity do so on an annual
basis. However, some of the greatest opportunities to
make significant charitable contributions occur just
when one is making major business, personal and financial
decisions. Some of the special circumstances in which
“planned giving” can benefit both the community and the
donor’s heirs include:
writing or revising a will or trust
contemplating the sale of a business or other
major asset
 planning for retirement
 having received a financial windfall
By Will or Living Trust
A charitable bequest is one of the easiest ways to give a gift
that will make a lasting difference in the lives of others. The
savings in estate taxes resulting from a gift to the community
foundation can be dramatic. Bequests can take a variety of
forms – a specific sum of money, a percentage of an estate,
or a certain piece of property.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
The charitable remainder trust is a beneficial life income plan
that financial advisors often recommend to their clients,
including those who may not have previously considered
charitable contributions as part of their estate planning. With
a charitable remainder trust, one can support the community
while gaining an immediate income tax deduction, reduce
estate taxes, potentially eliminate capital gains taxes,
increase income from assets, and still provide for a spouse
and heirs.
The Charitable IRA
Using an IRA for a charitable bequest can pay real dividends
in the community. If one has already created a sound estate
plan that achieves all objectives and takes care of the family,
one lingering challenge remains: What should one do with an
IRA or qualified retirement plan? Leaving the IRA with the
children could result in a combined tax of up to 80 percent,
and if one has already provided well for both his or her
spouse and children through an existing estate plan, the
distribution to a charity makes extremely effective use of pretax
dollars.
Charitable giving is often overlooked. It’s amazing how often
people say, “I never thought about making a charitable gift
through my estate plan. It just never occurred to me.” When
you name a charity in your plan to receive a specific amount
by Robert D. Keijonen, Attorney at Law
FPH Community Partner
or a percentage of your estate, you will make it to an
organization you have supported during your lifetime. You
declare that you believe in the mission of the charity and that
you want a portion of your accumulated assets to be invested
in furthering the good work of a worthy cause.
To learn more about planned giving or ways in which you
can make a difference, contact The Foothill Foundation at
(626) 857-3348 or visit www.foothillfoundation.org.
M
uch of Robert Keijonen’s busy law practice centers
on estate and tax planning areas, particularly
utilizing revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, and
family partnerships. He places emphasis on estate
planning; corporate, partnership, and business matters;
taxation; real estate; and business acquisitions.
Keijonen has represented the health care industry
in a variety of ways over the last decade. He has
negotiated and drafted numerous hospital-related
contracts. Furthermore, Keijonen has acted as counsel
to numerous tax exempt organizations and has
counseled related taxable and tax exempt entities to
coordinate their joint and separate activities. He has
served as a guest speaker on issues in estate planning
areas as well as those affecting health care facilities
and practitioners, including medical practice mergers,
acquisitions, and valuations.
Keijonen is a member of the PADRE FOUNDATION’s
County. Admitted to the California Bar in 1976, he
earned his bachelor of arts degree in economics from
Friends for Life
Going for the . . .
Gold
Card
Y
ou know you’ve reached your place in life when
you’re offered a gold card – and Foothill Foundation
donors are no exception. Contributors to the
Foundation are now eligible to receive the Foothill
Presbyterian Hospital Gold Card.
As a Gold Card holder, donors and their immediate family
are entitled to membership privileges from the moment
they enter the hospital. For card holders, the registration
and discharge process starts by presenting the card, and
the necessity to meet with a financial counselor during
discharge is eliminated. If an overnight stay in the
hospital is required, a beautiful fresh flower arrangement
will be delivered to the patient’s room. Additionally, but
only by availability, a private room can be requested at no
additional charge. And for each day of hospitalization, a
friend or companion is invited to join the patient for a
meal using a complimentary meal pass.
Where else can you find a gold card that actually gives
back to you – and without interest rates and finance
charges?
To be eligible for a Gold Card, a donor must give an
annual gift of $500 or more to The Foothill Foundation.
A simple, completed application form must accompany
the contribution.
For more information or to obtain an application
form, contact the Foundation at (626) 857-3348.
Questar Construction and TAYLOR:
Uniting two firms to create Foothill’s new
Arthur and Sarah Ludwick Emergency Care Pavilion
Two firms with a long history of working with
medical organizations to create state-of-the-art,
community-minded facilities joined forces to design
and build the new Arthur and Sarah Ludwick Emergency
Care Pavilion.
Questar Construction, a construction design company,
and TAYLOR, an architectural firm, worked closely with
hospital staff and administration to create a facility that
will meet the needs of Glendora and the surrounding
communities for years to come.
Questar got its start in the early 1990s doing work from the garage of President Jim
Salomon’s San Dimas home. Initially, Questar did health-care work because state
regulations and Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)
requirements made such projects undesirable to many companies, so there were a
number of opportunities. As time went on and the company became more
established, the rewarding nature of health-care work motivated the company to
continue with these types of projects.
Questar is now housed in a building that it designed and built in Newport Beach.
The company’s extensive work with Citrus Valley Health Partners over the years
includes the Family Birth & Newborn Center at the Citrus Valley Medical Center –
Queen of the Valley Campus in West Covina and the Catheterization Laboratory at
the Citrus Valley Medical Center – Inter-Community Campus in Covina, as well as a
number of remodeling projects for CVHP.
TAYLOR has specialized in institutional work, including hospitals, since being formed
in 1979. In designing the new pavilion, TAYLOR architects sought to give the new
building a contemporary look that was subtle enough so that it would blend in with
the existing facility and give the impression that it had always been part of the
hospital.
One of the ways in which the contemporary look was attained is through is
clerestory windows and a tall glass tower at the public entrance. The natural light
that will be allowed in, as well as the soothing color palette that has been used,
22
22
help create a warm, welcoming
environment that will help patients and
their families feel more at ease.
As architects and designers formulated
a plan for the inside of the new pavilion,
special consideration was given to
designing workstations and patient care
areas that are as strategically well
placed and efficient as possible.
Questar and TAYLOR’s combined efforts
have helped create an emergency
department that will allow Foothill
Presbyterian Hospital to serve more
than 24,000 patients each year in a safe
and comfortable environment that is
consistent with and representative of
CVHP’s standards of excellence.
In Remembrance
Daniel Gene Vogt, M.D.
In remembrance . . .
1942 - 2007
D
an was born June 15, 1942 in Seward, Nebraska. He has an identical twin
brother, Don, and one other brother, Terry, born 14 months later. The three
of them grew up on the farm; they were close to each other not only in age,
but also in living all of those growing-up experiences. Dan graduated from Seward
High School in 1960. He received his bachelor of science degree from the University
of Nebraska in 1964, and graduated alongside his brother Terry from the University
of Nebraska Medical School in 1969. Dan completed his internship and began his
surgical residency at Highlands Hospital in Oakland, California. It was then that he
decided to go into emergency medicine, and finished the first Emergency Medicine
residency program offered in the country - through the University of Southern
California at Los Angeles County Hospital.
After that, Dan moved to Colorado where he managed emergency rooms in the
Colorado and Wyoming cities of Longmont, Loveland, Fort Collins, and Cheyenne.
In 1977, he established the Emergency Service Physicians Group at Lutheran
Hospital in Wheat Ridge. This group has been quite successful and the last year
provided emergency care to more than 100,000 patients at Lutheran Hospital and
Good Samaritan Hospital, in Denver. In 1986, Dan moved to San Clemente,
California, where he managed the emergency services department at San Clemente
Hospital. He often piloted sail boats on the ocean, and his favorite destination was
Avalon on Santa Catalina Island.
Dan’s last move was to Rancho Mirage in the Palm Springs area, where he resided
with his wife Kerry. On Tuesday, April 10, his immediate family held a memorial
ceremony at sea between Dana Point and Santa Catalina, where Dan’s ashes were
scattered over the area of the ocean that he enjoyed so much.
Dan is survived by his widow, Kerry; his mother, Eleanor Vogt, of Seward,
Nebraska; two daughters, Daidre Johnson and Dori LaJeunesse, both of Broomfield,
Colorado; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Dr. Terry Vogt
of Evergreen, Colorado, and Don Vogt of Morrison, Colorado.
paramount importance,” says Jane (Tessitor) Braun, a
founding staff member of Foothill Presbyterian Hospital as its
public relations manager.
A founding member indeed, Braun was one of the first
employees to work for the hospital prior to its opening in
1973. Answering a newspaper ad for the role of public
relations coordinator, Braun was hired by FPH administrator
Don Adams.
“I worked out of my house for 18 months writing publicity while the hospital was being
built, and was one of the first four staff members to move into the new building when it
was nearly finished,” Braun recalls. Rounding out the foursome with Braun were Adams,
his secretary, and Winifred Robertson, the first director of volunteers.
Braun took charge of all of the publicity leading up to, and following, Foothill’s opening.
“Once we opened our doors, I also handled the extra curricular activities, such as health
fairs, flu clinics, open houses, Santa’s arrival by helicopter, Physical Therapy Day – all
without a secretary or a computer.” During her 15-year tenure with the hospital, Braun’s
additional tasks included most of the photography, designing and writing brochures, and
writing the articles for the quarterly FPH NEWS – now known as Healthwise. More so, she
wrote publicity pieces for organizations such as the FPH Men’s Club, Glendora Rotary Club,
the Glendora Jaycees annual Spring Runs, and other activities with which the hospital was
affiliated. “Don Adams wanted me to write a job description for my job, and it took me
four months to do it because I was so busy,” remembers Braun.
JANE BRAUN
Before her days with FPH, Braun worked as a reporter, staff
writer, and receptionist for the Monrovia Journal/Duartean.
Although she had no formal training in public relations, Braun
did have many years under her belt volunteering for various
organizations, usually adding publicity to her responsibilities.
Though much of her work, both volunteer and otherwise, was
in and around the city of Glendora, her altruism was felt
around the world.
“My first late husband, Frank Tessitor, an engineer, was chief
of public works for a foreign aid program called the Agency
for International Development (AID). We lived in Karachi,
Pakistan for three years. After living in Glendora and
Bethesda, Maryland, for a few years, we moved to Taipei,
Taiwan,” explains Braun. The Tessitors remained in Taiwan
for five years, before returning to Glendora, her home for
40 years.
While in Pakistan, Braun (Tessitor) developed and directed
a popular international recreation program comprised of 20
weekly activities and classes serving nine nationalities.
Among her volunteer activities was distributing milk in
refugee camps. But it was during her time in Taiwan that
she celebrated her highest achievement.
“As I look back on my life, my greatest accomplishment was
establishing the Taiwan Western Art Library in Taipei,” Braun
recalls. “It had never been done before. Chinese students
were studying Western art, but with limited examples. When
Western publications came to the University, the professors
took them for themselves. The students were left with
nothing from which to learn.” Braun was able to establish
the library with help from the art students, plus donations
and support from the U.S. Ambassador, U.S.I.S., AID, various
other U.S. government agencies, and organizations in Taipei
and the United States. “We were able to get donations of
art books – including the entire Skira collection – movie
projectors and recorders, cartoons from Hanna Barbera
Studios, and a variety of art books from private clubs in
the States.”
Chang Fu Tsung, director of the National Central Library in
Taipei, welcomed the collection within its library. Here the
students could work and research Western art, something
they had wanted to do for a long time but never expected to
happen. As a result, Braun became fast friends with many of
the artists and art students. “Establishing the Western Art
Library was the turning point of my life,” Braun says fondly.
“It was a wonderful experience.”
By the time the library came into being, Braun was awarded a
commendation by the Taiwan Minister of Education. Two
years later, she founded the companion Library of Occidental
Music at the National Central Library.
Returning to Glendora, Braun continued to live a rich life with
Frank and their three children: Judi (Rudd); Doug (Tessitor);
and Joyce (Farnsworth), with five granddaughters and six
great grandchildren to come. Frank passed away in 1977 after
38 years of marriage. Two years later, Braun met Howard,
who became her second husband in 1981. She was widowed
a second time when their 17-year marriage ended with
Howard’s death in 1998.
Foothill’s first publication – FPH News – was launched by Braun.
Today we know it as Healthwise, this very newsletter.
Over the years, Braun has immersed herself in the
community, taking on volunteer and leadership roles
throughout. Shortly after returning to the States she was
named a ‘Southern California International Woman’ by
members of the press for her volunteer work locally and
abroad. Subsequently, she has earned many honors and
accolades over the years including the Glendora Chamber
of Commerce’s Community Service Award; the L.A. County
Department of Health Services’ Outstanding Volunteer Award;
two Women of Achievement Certificates from the YWCA of
the San Gabriel Valley; and the Humanitarian Service Award
by the Glendora Coordinating Council. In 2000, Braun was
named Citizen of the Year by the Glendora Chamber of
Commerce.
As special as these awards are to her, Braun is most
passionate about the ways in which she spends her days –
or more accurately, with whom. The list of service
organizations and action groups with whom she divides her
time goes on and on, such as the Citrus College Foundation,
which she has served for more than 14 years. Eight of those
years were spent as chair of the Performing Arts Committee;
six as a member of the Citrus Foundation Board of Directors,
two as president, and simultaneously, three as founding chair
of the Taste of Autumn Food and Wine Tasting Benefit. She
has been a member of the Glendora Coordinating Council
since 1981, with 11 years on the board, and two years as
president.
HEALTHWISE FOOTHILL PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL

EYE-DAS (Eye Diseases Are Serious) has also benefited from
Braun’s tireless energy. Founded in 1975 by Ida and Joe
Fracasse to help the visually impaired, EYE-DAS provides its
members with resources, education, information, and social
activities in order to enable independence and to improve
quality of life. Braun has been on board since the early days,
initially serving as chair of the steering committee, followed
by two years as the Foundation’s charter president. Earlier,
she provided the impetus for the founding of the Eugene
Beckwith Memorial Low Vision Center – now the Foothill
Center for the Partially Sighted – at Foothill Presbyterian
Hospital.
Braun’s taste for the arts was not left in Asia. She was a
board of directors’ member of the San Gabriel Valley
Symphony for 11 years and president of the Symphony’s
Women’s Committee for three. But as passionate as she is
about the arts, Braun is modest about her know-how.
“It’s funny. I’m a good audience, but I can’t carry a tune.
And I have no knowledge of music, but I know the value of it
and I appreciate it.”
Her artful palate continues to play into her daily life. Braun,
who recently retired to Mt. San Antonio Gardens in
Claremont, has added a few responsibilities. She serves on
the Flower Committee, providing floral arrangements for the
Social Building several times a year, she has staged fashion
shows for the residents, heads the Dinner Announcements
Committee, and helps in the Low Vision Center where she
orders Talking Books from the Braille Institute for the
residents with impaired vision.
Still, her memories of life overseas are vivid. Instead of
curling up with a good book at the end of a long day, Braun is
writing a book about her experiences in Pakistan more than
50 years ago. Original Chinese paintings adorn her walls. An
oil that she painted of Pakistan’s Governor General’s body
guards is partially hidden behind one wall, and one of her
Chinese paintings, displayed with a number of water colors by
Chinese masters on other walls, reminds her of days in
Taiwan so long ago.
Despite their many volunteer commitments, my parents
always make time for family. When we were growing
up, we had dinner together almost every night and my
parents never missed a game, recital, music lesson, or
other event. Now that we have families of our own and
are spread across several states, my parents still devote
as much time as possible to visiting us and their
grandchildren. My parents call me every weekend to
make sure Elizabeth is coming over to see them, and
are always happy to have Elizabeth share the day with
them – even when she is home sick. Although their
other grandchildren are not as fortunate as Elizabeth to
have grandma and grandpa next door, they really enjoy
having tea parties with grandma, feeding the fish, or
riding the train with grandpa when they do come to
town.
Both of my parents have contributed years of service to
Foothill Presbyterian Hospital. My mom served on the
board of directors for several years and has been a
member of the auxiliary for decades. My dad served as
president of the Foothill Foundation for several years
and currently serves on the board of directors for Citrus
Valley Health Partners. They have generously
contributed to the hospital over the years, including the
bronze sculpture that all hospital patients and visitors
enjoy as they enter FPH. Quality healthcare benefits all
of the citizens of Glendora, and my parents continue to
offer their support and guidance to the hospital to
ensure that we continue to have excellent health care
in Glendora for future generations.
With the upcoming opening of the Emergency Care
Pavilion, I am pleased that the community will honor
my parents by naming the Pavilion after them. We are
really proud and thankful to our parents for all the
years of service they have given to Glendora, and hope
that future generations will remember them and follow
their lead in giving generously of themselves to better
their community.
