from the get go. True, I never talked
to the man again, and his profession
didn’t relate to mine, but I will remember
that conversation for years to
come because of what it taught me
about being a good listener.
My father, also a video producer and
writer, used to say that the best way
to engage with people is to listen to
them. On plane flights he would make
it a point to talk to the person in the
seat next to him, making sure that he
focused on them and not on himself.
He taught me that if you want to
connect with people in a sincere
way and make them feel good about
themselves, listen to their stories and
respond with warmth and openness.
In the world of networking, listening
and caring are important attributes
for a good networker. Also important
is the ability to connect people. Many
times I’ve listened to someone’s pitch
and realized that they would be a perfect
fit for someone else I know.
It’s as if I have a mental rolodex that I
refer to when talking to others. One of
the most satisfying feelings for me as
a business professional is to connect
people I care about with others who
can offer them the services they need.
I don’t worry too much about what
people can do for me, because that
seems to happen naturally when I
care about others first. The more I
listen and approach networking from
a selfless perspective, the more I seem
to gain in terms of contacts for my
own business.
So, next time you are out and about
networking, take the time to stop,
look at and really listen to the people
who are interacting with you.
Giving time and attention to others,
even folks whose businesses don’t
relate to yours, will establish you as
a caring person of integrity who is
known for being a good listener and a
good connector, and that can only be
good for business. ●
