Careers & Employability
Service
These days a university education means
more than just your final qualification. As
a leading university for professionals, we
help you to get the skills and experience
that graduate employers are looking for. We
provide a range of activities including career
development workshops, job search support
and employer presentations to help you get
the best job for you after you graduate.
We can also help you to find part-time
work including on-campus employment
through jobs4students and information
on volunteering opportunities. If you are
studying in Cheshire, also check out Jobshop.
Graduation might seem a long way off but
starting your university career with the end in
mind will help you to make the most of your
time at university.
Support for students with a
learning or other disability
The Learner Development Service provides
advice, guidance and support to students
who are disabled or have a specific learning
disability such as dyslexia.
Advisors guide students through any
necessary screenings or assessments to
identify their individual needs and can also
help eligible students to gain funding for
disability-related support. Advisors will talk
to teaching staff about any study-related
support a student may need to overcome
significant disadvantages that may result
from their disability.
Advisors also work with academic and other
university staff such as the libraries, to raise
awareness of disability issues and ensure that
appropriate support is available.
Counselling Service
Sometimes things can happen unexpectedly,
which cause us difficulties or worry. If you
experience any personal problems or just feel
that things are getting on top of you during
your time at university, we can offer you the
chance to talk to a professionally trained
counsellor in confidence about any issue you
may have – not just related to your studies.
We also run useful workshops and courses on
relaxation, stress management and confidence
building, which can support your learning and
development.
Support for care leavers
MMU is committed to providing care leavers
with as much support as possible to help
them adapt to life at university. We recognise
that you may not need, or want, any extra
support, but it’s important to know what you
are entitled to - especially if you are settling
into a new course and a new place to live.
Support available includes a care leaver’s
bursary (currently £1,000) that is paid to
students under the age of 25 who have
previously been in care. This is paid in
addition to the financial support you may get
from your local authority and from Student
Finance England.
Support with accommodation is also available
all year round, if you need it and student
support officers are based in the faculties to
provide support and advice when needed.
