As a national leader in research and general<br />
manufacturing, the Chicago area is primed<br />
to expand its life sciences presence.<br />
Overview<br />
Since the opening in 1946 of Argonne National Laboratory,<br />
the first national science and engineering research laboratory,<br />
the Chicago area has developed a reputation as a hub for<br />
research and innovation.<br />
Headquartered in the Chicago area are large life sciences<br />
companies including Abbott Laboratories, Astellas, Baxter,<br />
Hospira, Takeda, and Walgreens. These companies, and<br />
many smaller life sciences firms, are located in the north<br />
suburban submarket.<br />
Evidence of commitments by companies to the Chicago market<br />
includes recent build-to-suit headquarters’ for both Astellas<br />
and Takeda Pharmaceuticals as well as a recent significant<br />
transaction by Sysmex. In 2007, Takeda completed its new<br />
