ROCHESTER ALUMN I REVIEW 123
II T LE ICS II
Sp ring Athletics
Our baseball and track squads have been
han dicapped in their attempts to p ractice
by i nclement weather, a condition that
o bviously must be expected in this cli mate
at this time of the year. At this writing
the baseball team has played one game,
while the track men are assiduously applyi
ng themselves against the coming of the
Allegheny College squad for the opening
d u al meet at U n iversi ty Field on May 7th.
Hamilton supplied the opposition for the
opening baseball game here on Saturday,
April 30th, and, had not an unfortunate
error eventuated in the closing stages of the
game, ou r representatives would have been
credited with a v i ctory. With the score
4 to 1 in Rochester's favor in the eighth
inning, two men down and men on fi rst
and third, a Buff and Blue batter lifted a
fly ball to left-field that was d rapped. Before
another man could be retired, the visito
rs had assu med a 5-to--I- lead, which they
held to the end.
It was a spir it-breaking game for Collamer,
the Rochester pitcher, to lose, as he
held the Hamilton hitters to seven singles
and passed only one man. The support
accorded him was fi rst-class up to the eighth
inning, when two more bobbl es followed
Titus' error. Forney, a sophomore from
Dal ton , M ass. , d id especially noteworthy
work defensively with several fine stops
and accurate throws in crises. Kenyon
drove in three of Rochester's fou r runs by
triplin g to left-center in the second inn ing
with two men on and then si n gl ing on his
next tu rn at bat to score Titus, who had
d r i ven a long- double to the left-field fence.
Kenvon tried to make home on the first
driv and would have scored, had not Knox
made a rema rkabl y accu rate line throw to
the plate.
Morris also p it ched well for Hamilton
and fanned no less than eleven men. Howeve
r, he was touched UD in lively fashion
at intervals and was fortunate in being
credited with a v ictory.
Dr. Fauver, who is again coaching the
baseball squad, has had to form an entirely
new infield, as Apperman, the only man
hack from last season 's defense, has been
moved to the outfiel d , where he shone in
his preparato ry school days. Zornow, Forney
and H asen auer, all three from last
year's freshmen team, are holding down
third, short and first, respectively, while
Tatelbaum, a j unior from Elmira, is playi
ng second base.
Titus is the only veteran fielder available,
but the outer d efense is, undoubted ly,
stronger than has been the case in several
seasons. Titus, despite his unfortunate e rror
in the Hamilton game, is one of the
best all-around men we have had, as he
fields nicely and is a very good batsman.
Apperman is playing center field, where
his natural speed shows to special advantage.
Kenyon, playing the other outfield
position in the Hamilton game, evidenced
much ground covering ability by sn ari n g
one esp ecially hardhit ball afte r a long run .
Beside Collamer, Wood, a senior, is also
avai lable for mound duty, although at this
writing he has done little ow ing to a so re
'arm. Kenyon is also being used in the
p itcher's box, with Ch ipp and Ashton of
last year 's freshman team also showing
much promise. Stephen Story, who is manager
of the team, is also a hu rler of considerable
ability. I ncitental ly, he is the
only left h ander on the squad.
The team is particularly strong in the
catch ing department, where Captain J ohn
Costello is performing for his third successive
season. The former Geneseo player
is not on l y a splendid receiver but also a
real hitter, and th ose of us inte rested in the
progress of the team do not like to think
wh at his absence next season w ill probably
mea n.
Track Prospects Doubtful
The track squad is being coached by
Harry Lawson in the track events and by
Lawrence J u dd in the field events. For
the first time f reshmen will not be available,
as we have been making an except ion
to the one-year residence rule in that sport,
in that candid ates from all four classes
work out together and our opponents have
been using fi rst year men.
In add i tion to the meet with Allegh en y,
Hamilton and Alfred will be met in dual
contests on their respective field on th e suc-
