Finance." Mr. Morman has written numerous<br />
books on credits, finance, economics and like<br />
subjects and was for some time in the service<br />
<strong>of</strong> the United States gnvernment as an economist<br />
; he is also a regular contributor to "The<br />
Magazine <strong>of</strong> Wall Street."<br />
Charles R. VanVoorhis, former state Public<br />
Service Commissioner, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rochester</strong>, and Miss<br />
May M. Ward, his former secretary, were married<br />
at Albany on April 18th. They are spending<br />
three months in Europe, traveling in HoIland,<br />
Germany, Belgium, France, Italy and<br />
England, and upon their return will reside<br />
in <strong>Rochester</strong>, where Mr. VanVoorhis is a member<br />
<strong>of</strong> the law firm <strong>of</strong> John VanVoorhis' Sons.<br />
Ex-'9t. Charles M. Thoms, <strong>Rochester</strong> real<br />
estate dealer, is touring the world and has<br />
passed some time in Burma, India and Java.<br />
'92. Rev. Henry B. Williams, former pastor<br />
<strong>of</strong> the First Baptist Church <strong>of</strong> Woburn and now<br />
pastor <strong>of</strong> the First Baptist Church in New Bedford,<br />
Mass., was the princi pal speaker on the<br />
fifth district program, which made up the dedicatory<br />
services at the n ew First Baptist Church<br />
at Woburn.<br />
'93. Sympathy is extended to Herbert A.<br />
Slaight, <strong>of</strong> Cleveland, 0., and Leland V. Slaight,<br />
<strong>of</strong> New York City, ex-'97, over the death <strong>of</strong><br />
their mother, Dr. Mary J. Slaight. Dr. Slaight<br />
practiced in <strong>Rochester</strong> for many years and was<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the first women to be appointed city<br />
physician in this city.<br />
'94. Rev. Rufus M. Traver, minister <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Hilton Baptist Church, presided at the ordina- .<br />
tion <strong>of</strong> his son, Rol an M. Traver, which took<br />
pl ace in h is church.<br />
'96. Rev. Carl Betz, minister <strong>of</strong> the Bethlehem<br />
Church, was reelected president <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Rochester</strong> Conference <strong>of</strong> the New York Min <br />
isterium at the closing sess ion <strong>of</strong> the spring<br />
convention held in <strong>Rochester</strong> recently.<br />
'97. Dr. Mason D. Gray, head <strong>of</strong> the classical<br />
language department in East High and the<br />
junior high schools, and the Board <strong>of</strong> Education's<br />
specialist in this field, has marked the<br />
completion <strong>of</strong> twenty-five years <strong>of</strong> service in<br />
the <strong>Rochester</strong> public schools with a new firstyear<br />
text book on the teaching <strong>of</strong> Latin called<br />
"Latin for Tod ay," which has recently been<br />
issued by his publishe rs. Dr. Gray spent twoand-a-half<br />
years as a member <strong>of</strong> the commission<br />
which made a survey <strong>of</strong> the teaching <strong>of</strong> the<br />
classical languages in the schools and colleges<br />
? f the country and did a great deal <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Import ant work. This commission's report is<br />
regarded as one <strong>of</strong> the great contributions to<br />
educational research <strong>of</strong> the times.<br />
Dr. John J. Quinn, who has been head <strong>of</strong> the<br />
department <strong>of</strong> mathematics and physics at St.<br />
Edward's <strong>University</strong>, Austin, Texas, since 1923,<br />
has been elected dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Engin<br />
.<br />

Ex-'97. Sa fety Commissioner Curtis W. Barker,<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Rochester</strong>, was recently presented with<br />
a hand ! ome gold badge, with a large diamond,<br />

'98. H a rl an W. Rippey, attorney and ch airm�<br />
n <strong>of</strong> the Mon roe County Democratic committee,<br />
has been appointed by Governor Smith<br />
�o the Supreme Court bench, to fill a position<br />
10 the Seventh Judicial District created by the<br />
enactment <strong>of</strong> a law which gave that District<br />
an additional justice. A Su preme Court J us-<br />
tice Mr. Rippey will serve until January lst<br />
and will be a candidate for election next November<br />
for a full term.<br />
'02. Lloyd S. Tenny, who has been serving<br />
as acting chief <strong>of</strong> the Bureau <strong>of</strong> Agricultural<br />
Economics in the United States Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Agriculture since last June, has been appointed<br />
chief <strong>of</strong> the Bureau by Secretary <strong>of</strong> Agriculture<br />
Jardine. This appointment places Mr. Ten ny at<br />
the head <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the largest and most important<br />
federal services to agricultural interests<br />
<strong>of</strong> this country.<br />
'02. Harvey F. Morris, adverti sing manager<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Hickey-Freeman Clothing Company <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Rochester</strong>, N. Y., presided at a conference between<br />
retail and wholesale advertising men at<br />
the convention <strong>of</strong> the National Association <strong>of</strong><br />
Retail Clothers, held at St. Louis during March.<br />
'05. Raymond C. Keople, director <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Bureau <strong>of</strong> Attendance and Work Permit Certification<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Education, <strong>Rochester</strong><br />
is the author <strong>of</strong> an article called "Seven to Sev�<br />
en teen," which explains the State Compulsory<br />
Education law and its enforcement.<br />
Ex-'OS. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight E. Wetmore<br />
<strong>of</strong> Pittsford, N. Y., have sailed for Europe o�<br />
the S. S. Rochambeau, planning to return about<br />
June 15th.<br />
'06. Prentiss B. Gilbert has been appointed<br />
Acting-Chief, Division <strong>of</strong> Western European<br />
Affairs, Department <strong>of</strong> State, Washington. It<br />
is the largest and most important <strong>of</strong> the political<br />
divisions <strong>of</strong> the Department which, as well<br />
as being charged with matters pertaining to<br />
American relationship to the League <strong>of</strong> Nations,<br />
naval limitation, disarmament and similar<br />
problems, handles all questions <strong>of</strong> policy between<br />
the United States government and fifteen<br />
European states, including all <strong>of</strong> the great<br />
worl d powers except Japan.<br />
- William A. Searle, has resigned his position<br />
as assistant to the president <strong>of</strong> the National<br />
Association <strong>of</strong> Life Underwriters, which he<br />
has held since 1924, and has bt;come supervisor<br />
<strong>of</strong> agencies for the National Life Insurance<br />
Company <strong>of</strong> Vermont. Mr. Searle's home will<br />
still remain in Haddonfield, N. J.<br />
Harry J. Simmelink, who has been following<br />
the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> civil engineer at <strong>Rochester</strong><br />
for several years, started a coal and contracti<br />
ng business on January 1st <strong>of</strong> this year.<br />
'07. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Howard P. Barss, <strong>of</strong> the Oregon<br />
Agricultural College, Corvallis, Oregon, was<br />
this year elected vice-president <strong>of</strong> the American<br />
Phytopathological Society.<br />
Nathaniel G. West, princi pal <strong>of</strong> Andrews<br />
School No. 9, <strong>Rochester</strong>, has been granted a<br />
year's leave <strong>of</strong> absence for study and teaching<br />
in New York <strong>University</strong>. Mr. West will spend<br />
the next school year studying for his doctor <strong>of</strong><br />
philosophy degree and will also teach a course<br />
in elementary school principalship in the department<br />
<strong>of</strong> education al administration <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
'09. Pr<strong>of</strong>. John W. Johnson, <strong>of</strong> the Berkeley<br />
Baptist Divinity School, Berkeley, Calif., was<br />
this year elected to "Membership at Large" in<br />
the National Social Science Honor Society<br />
