The Plainview Bulldog boys golf team competed in the weather-shortened Canyon ISD Triangular, but only got to play nine holes. Plainview took second in its triangle with a 166 while Dumas fi nished with a 158 and Pampa rounded out the group with a 168. Individually, Jacob Rogers led the Bulldogs with a 2-over par 38 while Marshall Thomas fi nished with a 39. Keiffer McBeth shot a 43 while Trent Kinkaid and Tim Gonzales shot 46 and 48, respectively. Overall, the performance was an improvement for Plainview, even in the lackluster weather. “We still had a couple of holes that hurt us,” said head coach Mike Lewis. “We’ll have 4 or 5 good holes and then take a double or worse, hit it out of bounds, or 3-putt, but that’s what this stuff is about in the fall — getting experience and learning some golf courses.” Plainview will next play Oct. 28 in Borger for its fi - nal match of the fall. Pioneers turn in best times of year LEVELLAND — The Wayland Baptist cross country teams turned in their best times of the season on Saturday at the Subway/SPC Cross Country Festival. The Pioneer men fi nished in second place with 45 points, just 10 behind South Plains College, while the women, with two runners borrowed off the track team, fi nished fourth with 99 points. Individually, freshman Hildon Boen crossed the fi nish line in second place with an outstanding time of 24:09.25 in the 8K race. Sophomore Lucius Lopez See WBU, Page 11B Plainview X-country braves cold CANYON — In the 42 degree cold and drizzling rain, the Plainview Bulldog and Lady Dog cross country teams braved the elements to compete at the Canyon Invitational on Saturday. The varsity girls were again led by sophomore Daisy Guerrero, who fi nished 20 seconds faster than at this meet last year with a time of 12 minutes, 54 seconds and placed 14th out of 65 runners. Janie Macias continued to improve and fi nished as the Lady Dogs’ No. 2 runner and 33rd overall with a time of 13:34. Kayla Carbajal fi nished 20 seconds back of Macias in 45th while Claduia Botello clocked in at 14:50. Eva Mendoza rounded out the group with a time of 15:06. The Bulldogs were led by Prince Dawkins, who fi nished 24th and was the only Bulldog runner who broke 18 minutes (17:53). Eli Corona fi nished nine seconds back of Dawkins with a time of 18:04. Chris Salinas clocked in at 18:41, Saul Gomez fi nished with a time of 19:40 and Martin DeLeon rounded out the group with a time of 20:20. Team totals were not available at press time. The Bulldogs JV was led by Jacobsin Enriquez, who passed three runners in the last 400 meters to medal in the top 15 with a time of 20:11. The junior varsity girls were led by sophomore Janely Gonzales, who ran a 14:28. All Plainview teams return to Canyon Saturday to run in the WTAMU Invitational which will be the fi nal tune-up before the district meet on Oct. 29th at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. On a cold, dreary Saturday afternoon at Hilliard Field, the WBU women fi - nally put an end to the drought, getting three goals from three different players to capture a 3-0 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Her effort helped us score that last goal. She really did a lot today.” Pioneer freshman goalkeeper Shelby Ohler picked up her second win of the season, combining with junior Kylie Middleton, who closed things out, for the shutout. Wayland sweeps St. Greg’s, beats OBU in fi ve sets By Wayland Baptist University Wayland Baptist head volleyball coach Jim Giacomazzi has his team almost right where he wants it going into Tuesday night’s Sooner Athletic Conference match at No. 18 Lubbock Christian University. Giacomazzi’s squad has won three straight, including two this weekend on the road against St. Gregory’s University and Oklahoma Baptist. The Bulldogs’ pass defense came into Friday after giving up 295 yards with hopes of improving, but Lake View was able to take advantage of the smaller Bulldog secondary as Lake View quarterback Paxton Martin went 20-35 for 337 yards and three TDs. “We didn’t cover their receivers. We let ’em get by us,” Coach Hinojos said. “One thing we went into this from behind to defeat OBU in fi ve (23-25, 25-22, 27-25, 16-25, 15-12) on Saturday. Wayland is now tied for second in the conference standings with a 4-2 mark and is 16-3 overall. “I’m really pleased with the way we played against OBU. On Plainview’s fi rst possession of the second quarter, Miller made a slightly errant pitch to running back Roy Smith on an option play and the ball ended up on the ground. After Lake View recovered “We still aren’t playing as well as we did early in the season, but we’re getting there. We hit really well as a team, eliminating a lot of the attack errors that have plagued us lately.” The Pioneers were down 10-8 in the fi nal set on Saturday, but got three straight kills by Sabrina Davis, Jennifer Wyatt and Kimberli Harger to take an 11-10 lead. Wyatt, who registered a career high in kills against the Lady Bison, put down her 19th for the fi nal point of the match. “We knew that we were go- the fumble on the Bulldogs’ 18-yard line, Martin hit Roy Garcia on an out route that took the Chiefs to the 1-yard line. One play later Martin scored on a 1-yard sneak up the middle to put Lake View up by two scores. After a three and out by the Dogs, Lake View went on a 66-yard drive that culminated in an 11-yard pass to Smith in the back of the end zone that put Lake View up 21-2 with 8:16 left in the half. On the Bulldogs’ ensuing drive, the offense was fi nally able to string plays together. Plainview got to the 3-yard line when Miller picked up a fi rst down on third and 6. A couple of plays later, Jonathan Garza broke through the line for a 3-yard TD that pulled Plainview within two scores. But on Lake View’s next possession, Martin and Smith hooked up for the third and fi nal time on a 61yard TD that put the Chiefs back ahead by three scores. With a little more than fi ve minutes left to play, Miller hit Curry for a 52-yard pass that pulled Plainview back within two scores. On the ensuing kickoff, Smith booted a perfect onside kick that Solis snagged out of the air to give Plainview another possession . . . and a glimmer of hope. “I’m thinking at that point we’re going to score, then onside again,” Hinojos said. “The defense is playing good, it doesn’t matter if they get the football, and we had two timeouts left at that point. If we want to stay up with the pack in the standings, we need to get a win over LCU,” Giacomazzi said. Plainview Christian snaps losing streak with win over Olton OLTON — The Plainview Christian Lady Eagles ended their losing streak Saturday as they defeated the Olton Lady Mustangs in four sets, 17-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-17. PCHS head coach Deanna Mason said the team started off playing nervously and made some small errors that allowed Olton to win the fi rst set. The Lady Eagles (6-15) calmed down in the second set, and it started to show in their improved play. “When we settled down and started making our serves and playing some volleyball, we did just fi ne,” Mason said. “I just told them to put it in play, and let (Olton) make the mistakes.” In the tight third set, PCHS went point for point with the Lady Mustangs. Eventually, Jennifer Rowell took over the service game and hit two hard aces that sealed the set for the Lady Eagles. In addition to her two aces, Rowell had 26 digs. In the fourth set, the Lady Eagles carried over the momentum from the third and easily clinched the match with their biggest win of the match. Kamber Hayes led PCHS with seven kills, 11 digs and two blocks while Beckah Sisemore added six kills and 52 digs. Bonnie Kate Sisemore had a double-double for the Lady Eagles, picking up 21 digs and handing out 14 assists while also getting three aces. Beckah Spain contributed 27 digs and an ace; Lauren Johnson had three blocks, Macy Bennet had one ace and 32 digs; Cristen Bothwell had two kills, six digs and two blocks; and Audrey Sisemore had 13 digs. Going forward into the last part of district play, Mason said her team needs to take the good things from this match and apply them. “We need to be more aggressive in the back row, we tend to let things drop, thinking the other one is going to get the ball. We fi nally have confi dence in ourselves and we’ve started hitting the ball,” Mason said. The Lady Eagles will hold senior night Tuesday when they host Christ the King. The match is set to start at 6 p.m. The JV Lady Eagles also beat Olton, 25-19, 17-25, 25-18. Shelby Maresca led the JV with eight kills and 13 digs.
