Dear MMS Families,
It seems as if it takes almost no time for the school year to move into high gear. The first quarter of school
is in the books, and we are now already moving rapidly into the second quarter. I want to update parents
and share some important information and activities that have occurred during the last quarter.
As part of the Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS) program, the MMS staff regularly
analyzes comparable behavioral data to discern if we are trending in a positive or negative direction
regarding behavioral matters. When compared to first quarter data from the fall of 2011, we have seen a
decrease in the number of students receiving office disciplinary referrals (ODR) during the first quarter of
the 2012-2013 school year. Way to go MMS students and staff! Although we have had some
improvement in the areas of ODR, an item that stands out for improvement is having all students arrive to
school on time. During the first quarter of the school year, we have had 134 students tardy to school
because of missing the school bus or oversleeping. This is a slight drop from last year; however, we are
requesting parents help in having your child at school and in class when the first bell rings.
Congratulations to Mr. Rychecky and the 6th and 7th/8 th grade bands as they performed at the annual
Meet the Band Concert on October 10, 2012. Mr. Rychecky commented, “It was a great first
performance!” In addition, I want to commend the efforts of the MMS Choir under the direction of Mr.
Hartley, who conducted a combined concert with the WMS choir on October 11. 2012. Each of the
concerts highlighted the exceptional work of our students during the first quarter of the school year. The
attendance at both concerts was outstanding, and the students have shown excellent progress since the
start of the school year. We look forward to the winter band concert scheduled for December 13, 2012 and
the next Choral Concert scheduled for December 4, 2012. Both concerts will be held in the beautiful
Wauconda High School auditorium.
I would like to acknowledge the MMS Student Council for holding a fantastic Spooktacular activity night
with over 210 students attending. Dances/activity nights are scheduled for each quarter of the school year
and open for all MMS students. Parents are always welcome to chaperone any of our extracurricular
school events. The next activity night is scheduled for December 7, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
Congratulations to our new Student Council President, Keith Schoemake, and Vice President, Keegan
Sheridan, for winning the school elections earlier this year.
Finally, the combined efforts of the MMS and WMS PTOs recently held the annual Run for Your Life
5K- run/walk event. I want to congratulate the MMS and WMS PTO for organizing such an outstanding
event and recognize Miss Michelle Nelis for medaling in her age bracket. In addition, congratulations to
Mr. Todd Porter finishing first out of all the middle school staff members. This event had a record
turnout, and I want to thank the organizers, volunteers, and sponsors for making it an outstanding success
and experience for all!
Sincerely,
Dr. David Wilm

Future Business Leaders of America
Sunday, October 28th was National Make a Difference Day, and students
from Matthews Middle School joined students from Wauconda High
School to get involved and make a difference in their community. These
students are members of a club called Future Business Leaders of America.
The club originally started at the high school two years ago under the
guidance of Wendy Mills and was such a success that starting a club for 8th
graders at Matthews Middle School seemed the logical next step. Thus far,
over fifty students have signed up. Our first event involved Trick-or-
Treating in Port Barrington, and instead of asking for candy, the students
asked for donations to help the Lake County Homeless Shelter of Lake
County. We were able to donate a van full of supplies to the homeless
shelter thanks to the generosity of the residents of Port Barrington and
the efforts of our caring students at Wauconda High School and Matthews
Middle School. Future FBLA events at Matthews will include volunteering
at an animal shelter, and possibly serving meals for the homeless, and bringing
holiday joy to needy families. For more information about this club,
please contact Diane Olson at 847-526-6210 ext, 1181

Dear Parents:
Emergency Early Dismissal Procedures
Due to Severe Winter Weather
In the event of severe winter weather occurring during the school day, it may be necessary to dismiss the
students housed at Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School and Wauconda High School
earlier than usual.
The reason this action would be taken is to allow the buses an opportunity to drop off these older students
in order to return in time to take the younger elementary students at Wauconda Grade School, Robert
Crown School and Cotton Creek School home according to their regular dismissal schedule.
If this early dismissal was not done, we would run the risk of buses being unable to return the Wauconda
Grade School, Robert Crown and Cotton Creek students to their homes, or very late drop off for these
same students. In addition, we hope to avoid buses driving in a snowstorm when it is dark.
Parents of students in grades six through twelve need to be aware of the possibility that this situation
could occur due to inclement winter weather. If it does, we would enact the SchoolMessenger Service in
an attempt to notify you that your sixth through twelfth grade student was coming home early. As a
result, we ask that you make appropriate arrangements with your sixth through twelfth grade student in
order for them to gain access to shelter after being dismissed early due to weather conditions. This type
of situation does not occur often, but if it does we wanted you to be informed of our actions so that you
and your students can be prepared.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Daniel J. Coles
Estimados Padres:
Si ocurre, nosotros no
Sinceramente,
How are students reacting to the new lunch regulations? Some news
reports are portraying students as unsatisfied with the new lunch
regulations, claiming that not enough food is being served. However,
Arbor has seen a different reaction.
Elementary schools are seeing much less waste, especially with
tortilla chips. Even fifth grade students, who receive the same portions
as Kindergarten students, had said that they feel satified with the new
portions. Other than some minor changes such as smaller buns, high
school students have said they haven’t noticed a huge difference in
entrée portions. Students are excited for the variety of vegetables
offered, and for the option to choose between fruits and vegetables. One
middle school student asked to have spinach offered. This is the change
we are looking to see—students wanting to eat healthy versus forcing
them to do so.
October is Popcorn and
Cranberry Month!
Celebrate by making this Popcorn and
Did you know…
 Popcorn is a whole grain
Cranberries are a good source of
Dear Wauconda District #118 families,
Healthy Changes in Our School Cafeterias!
This fall, Wauconda District #118 school cafeterias are meeting tough new federal nutrition
standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well‐balanced and provide
students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage
your kids to choose school lunch!
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must
meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Starting in School Year 2012‐2013, school
lunches will meet additional standards requiring:
 Age‐appropriate calorie limits
Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of
produce)
A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and
legumes
Fat‐free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat‐free)
 More whole grains
 And less sodium
We’re always working to offer Wauconda students healthier and tastier choices.
School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families too! Elementary
lunches are priced at $2.45 and High School lunches are priced at $2.75. Lunch tickets may
be purchased on line for all schools or with a check made payable to District #118 at the
individual school level. Tickets are sold in blocks of 20, 15 or 10 lunches. Field trip sack
lunches are also available at the same price. Lunch tickets can be used to purchase field trip
sack lunches.
We look forward to welcoming your children to the cafeteria this fall. To find out more
about District #118’s healthy school meals d118.org, and to get the facts about school meals
