was inspired by my
being able to study
old aprons at the
museums that were
made available
through the Native
Arts Program.

There are only about twelve Native people
who know the Chilkat weaving technique
and only four Native women who have
enough knowledge and experience to
weave a robe. In the fall of this year I will
have finished my first Chilkat robe. I plan on
weaving Chilkat all my life. I want to
weave as well as my ancestors and to share
that tradition with the next generation of
weavers. I feel it is necessary to study their
work. I would like to study in the New
York museums as long as the grant allows.
Chilkat weaving requires a great deal of
commitment. My first robe has taken one
year and eight months to complete.
