If you count the medals German riders have won in Olympic Games you will come to 

the conclusion that horseback riding has earned the more medals for Germany than all 

other sports. The Games in Montreal 1978 were most successful for Hanoverian horses.

Part 2

The worries and concerns that the host of the 

1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo would not measure 

up to the demands of the equestrian sport 

prove unfounded. Course designer Shunzo Kido 

builds a jumping course at the highest international 

level. The jumper riders from Germany, Hermann 

Schridde with Dozent by Deputant/Schuss II, 

Kurt Jarasinski with Torro and Hans Günter Winkler 

with Fidelitas by Doemnitz I, could be satisfied 

with almost 40 penalty points after the first round. 

They add numerous penalty points during the second 

round. The German team finishes in first 

place winning the third team gold medal after the 

war in the end. The French team earns silver and 

Italy bronze. Hermann Schridde is one of two riders 

to complete the second round of the Nation Prize 

without any faults. Schridde could have become 

the Olympic champion with a little bit of luck but 

his toughest competition, the Olympic champion 

from 1952, Pierre Jonqueres d’Oriola from France, 

risks everything in the second round and finishes in 

front of the German opponent with only nine penalty 

points. The dressage competitions take a 

rather satisfactory course. All three German competitors 

are able to secure a spot in the final. Harry 

Boldt and his grey mount Remus become the best 

German dressage competitor placing second behind 

the Suisse champion Henry Chammartin on 

Woermann. Josef Neckermann rides his Holstein 

mare Antoinette into fifth position, Reiner Klimke 

his Dux by Duellant/Staatsanwalt into sixth place. 

These good individual results earn the German 

team the gold medal ahead of the Suisse team and 

the team from the United States. The German 

event riders deliver more than respectable performances 

in Tokyo. Before the Games the prognoses 

of winning a medal was less than slim. Winning 

the bronze medal in the team as well as in the individual 

competition comes to a great surprise. In 

accordance with the agreement between both 

German sporthorse associations Fritz Ligges and 

Horst Karsten compete representing the Federal 

Republic and Karl-Heinz Fuhrmann and Gerhard 

Schulz compete for the German Democratic Republic. 

Germany earns the bronze medal behind Italy 

and the United States. 26-year old Fritz Ligges and 

Donkosak by Dreikampf xx/Joho surprisingly bring 

home a well-deserved individual bronze medal. It 

is the last time that riders from East and West form 

a combined team. 

Mexico 1968: High altitude and downpour 

The expeditions to the Olympic Games in Tokyo 

1964 as well as numerous jumper competitions in 

the US and Canada showed that horses can handle 

long airplane trips quite well. Therefore the journey 

to the next Games in Mexico in 1968 is no 

reason for concern but the unusual climatic condi- 

tions at an altitude of 2,000 meters for the competitions 

is. The team finishes in third place in dressage 

behind the Soviet Union and the German 

Democratic Republic whose team members rode 

very well. The German team finds itself in fifth position 

after the final jumping class. The British team 

takes home team gold, the United States win silver 

and Australia bronze. Horst Karsten is Germany’s 

best competitor on eleventh place in the individual 

competition. The Olympic Games have a very sad 

ending For Jochen Mehrdorf and his mount. Lapislazuli 

has a severe panic attack on the return flight 

and has to be shot. Germany’s dressage riders successfully 

defend their team gold medal in front of 

the USSR and Switzerland. Josef Neckermann and 

Mariano win the individual silver medal behind 

gold medal winner Ivan Kizimow. Dr. Reiner Klimke 

and Dux bring home the individual bronze medal. 

It is in the nature of the Mexican spectators to 

show the greatest enthusiasm for the jumping 

competitions. After all their riders have belonged 

to the best of the World for many years. Olympic 

champion William Steinkraus from the USA leads 

the field of 42 competitors on this day which happens 

to be his birthday followed by Marion Cakes 

from Great Britain. Four riders fight for the bronze 

medal including Günter Winkler with Enigk by 

Endsport xx. Winkler finishes in fifth position; the 

bronze medal goes to David Broome. Team Canada 

is the surprising gold medal winning team followed 

by France. Germany wins bronze. Hermann 

Schridde’s rides are the sole reason why Germany 

looses the gold medal. He finishes both rounds 

with a total of 70,25 penalty points on his mount 

Dozent II. Alwin Schockmöhle and Donald Rex by 

Durban/Franz complete both courses with 18,75 

penalty points; the best result. Hans Günter Winkler 

and Enigk finish both courses with the sixth 

best result. 

Joy and mourning at the games in Munich in 

1972 

The games in Munich 1972 were to become the 

most beautiful and joyous games of the post-war 

period. However a black shadow fell over this 

worldly event on the eleventh Olympic day. Eight 

Arabic terrorists break into the Olympic village during 

the early morning hours of September 5th, 

shoot two athletes and hold nine athletes hostage. 

The perpetrators from Palestine demand the release 

of 200 Arabic prisoners who are held in Israel 

and a plane for their escape. Snipers try to overcome 

the hijackers at the airport in Fürstenfeldbruck. 

They kill three terrorists. All nine hostages, three 

additional hijackers and one German police officer 

are killed in the following gunfight. The competitions 

are stopped for 34 hours. At the time of the 

terrorist attack the Olympic three-day event had

team holds third place with an ever so slight 

advantage over Australia. Reservist Karl Schutz rides 

Pisco by Julius Caesar xx/Falkenheim. The German 

riders are able to hold on to their advantage 

after the stadium course and win the bronze medal 

behind Great Britain and the United States. Richard 

Meade wins the individual gold medal once 

again. The dressage competitions promise great 

excitement for the teams from Germany and the 

Soviet Union. Preceding championships and large 

competitions eliminated every doubt that noone 

but these two countries will decide the team and 

individual dressage competitions here. All Russian 

horses impress with type, expression, refined 

heads and excellent movement. Liselott Linsenhoff 

with her impressive 14-year old Swedish chestnut 

stallion Piaff and Josef Neckermann on his elevenyear 

old Venetia by Anblick xx even surpass any 

expectations. The third team member called Karin 

Schlüter on her 12-year old chestnut gelding Liostro 

by Der Löwe xx/Dolman impresses with a good 

seat, soft contact and subtle aids application; the 

ride however is not faultless. The judges do not agree 

in their scores. The placement differs between 

3rd and 16th! This ride prevents the team’s victory. 

The team from Russia becomes the new Olympic 

winner by a narrow margin; Germany comes in second 

in front of three female riders from Sweden 

who take home the team bronze medal. Liselott 

Linsenhoff earns Olympic gold on her mount Piaff 

with a considerable advantage. It is the first time in 

the history of equestrian competitions that a woman 

becomes Olympic champion in the individual 

competition. Josef Neckermann wins the bronze 

medal behind Elena Petoushkova from Russia. German 

jumper riders experience mixed emotions in 

Munich. The first competition is the individual jum- 

per class and ends in disappointment. Hartwig Steenken 

on proven Simona by Weingeist/Angola finishes 

in forth place in the equestrian stadium in 

München-Riem together with Hugo Simon, now 

from Austria, and Jamey Day from Canada. Gerd 

Wiltfang does not find any rhythm on Askan by 

Almhügel/Agram and finishes in 16th place. Graziano 

Mancinelli from Italy becomes the Olympic 

champion. Without any medals and rather depressed 

the riders from Germany look towards the 

team competition. The German team strengthened 

by Hans Günter Winkler on Torphy finishes the first 

round with a total of 16 penalty points followed by 

the US team. The second round turns into a dramatic 

duel. Team Germany wins the gold medal for 

the fifth time after 1936, 1956, 1960 and 1964 

with a difference of only 0,25 penalty points. This 

has never happened before in the history of the 

Olympic Games. 

1976: World champion and Olympic winner 

German riders are very successful at the top level 

of equine competition during the first half of the 

70s which allows for a favorable prognosis for the 

Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976. Hartwig Steenken 

and Simona win the World Championships 

in Hickstead, Great Britain in 1974; Dr. Reiner 

Klimke becomes Dressage World Champion in 

Copenhagen with Mehmed by Ferdinand/Altried 

and also wins team gold together with his team 

mates Liselott Linsenhoff/Piaff and Karin Schlüter/ 

Liostro. The riders from Germany perform beautifully 

at the continental championships, too. Alwin 

Schockemöhle becomes individual European 

Champion in Munich with his mount Warwick Rex 

by Wortschwall/Allwieder and wins gold with his 

team as well. The good results of German riders on 

various championships throughout the passed ye-

ars are confirmed in Montreal. All eleven riders return 

home with a medal. Once again the equestrians 

are the most successful athletes of all German 

Olympic participants. The competition runs even 

better than expected for Germany’s event riders: 

The team wins the silver medal behind USA. A repeat 

of an Olympic German-Russian dressage duel 

does not occur in Montreal. Only one rider from the 

Soviet Union presents a horse of Olympic caliber. 

The team from Germany has no trouble winning 

gold. Christine Stückelberger from Switzerland 

wins the individual gold medal on her exceptional 

Holstein mount Granat just like she did at the 

World Equestrian Games two years earlier. Harry 

Boldt rides Woyceck by Wunsch II/Deputant into 

second place; Dr. Reiner Klimke and Mehmed win 

bronze. 

39-year old Alwin Schockemöhle surpasses his 

own performances in the individual Olympic jumper 

competition. He finishes both rounds without 

any penalty points on his 10-year old Hanoverian 

gelding Warwick Rex as the only competitor. A 

jump-off for the gold medal is therefore not necessary. 

A first in the history of the Olympic Equestrian 

Games that a rider finishes the competition with 

zero faults. The teams have mixed feelings about 

the Nation Prize at the large Olympic Stadium in 

Montreal. The rain softened the grounds considerably. 

Alwin Schockemöhle/Warwick Rex, Paul 

Schockemöhle/Agent by Agram/Ingraben, Sönke 

Sönksen/Kwept and Hans Günter Winkler/Trophy 

are in first place together with the French team 

after the first round. As so often the last ride of the 

second round decides the outcome! If Alwin 

Schockemöhle has a faultless round, Germany 

wins gold. Warwick Rex makes two mistakes which 

results in eight penalty points: silver for Germany, 

gold for France. 

1980: The Western world boycotts the Olympic 

Games 

Mostly the Olympic movement has been able to 

separate the World Event for athletes from political 

developments except for the Olympic Games in 

Berlin that required a massive intervention of the 

IOC on national-socialistic dictators. The neutral 

status of the games came to an abrupt end in 

1979. The sport has to make a difficult and worldwide 

politically important decision after Soviet troops 

invaded Afghanistan: To either adhere to the 

Olympic idea and send athletes to the games in 

Moscow – or protest and ultimately boycott the 

games. In some athletic disciplines the Olympic 

victory looses its importance, if the best in this discipline 

do not compete. This certainly holds true for 

the equestrian games. The strongest riders meet at 

alternative championships called festivals. 

Los Angeles 1984: “American way of life” 

Latest at the opening ceremony everybody realizes: 

Los Angeles celebrates the Olympic Games of 

1984 in accordance with the American way of life. 

The youngest German military team of all times 

competes in Los Angeles. Claus Erhorn is the senior 

member of the team at the age of 25. The German 

team wins the bronze medal behind USA and 

Great Britain with strong nerves and three faultless 

rides on the final stadium course. The outstanding 

28-year old Mark Todd from New Zealand 

becomes the individual Olympic Champion. Dr. 

Reiner Klimke fulfills his greatest dream in the 

dressage ring. The lawyer certainly does not lack 

championship medals – one however is still missing: 

the individual Olympic gold medal. Klimke 

and his bay Westphalian Ahlerich surpass any prior 

performances in the Grand Prix of Los Angeles. The 

pair makes a team victory for Germany perfect 

with top scores. In the jumping competitions the 

great stars are from the host country. Touch of 

class and Joe Fargis defeat Konrad Homfeld and 

Abdullah in the jump-off for the individual gold 

medal. The riders from Germany being Paul 

Schockemöhle and Deister by Diskant/Adlerschild 

xx, Franke Sloothaak on Farmer, Fritz Ligges on 

Ramzes and Peter Luther on Livius cannot prevent 

the US-American dominance in the individual as 

well as the team competition. The German quartet 

proves itself beautifully. At times it even appears 

as if a silver medal is in reach. In the end the German 

riders must be content with the bronze medal 

behind USA and Great Britain. Paul Schockemöhle 

and Deister once again are the best German participants. 

They finish the individual competition in 

seventh place. n

„I love my 

Hanoverians!“ 

Age and experience are on his side: Eventing legend 

Mark Todd will be competing for Olympic honors. He 

counts on a Hanoverian at his seventh Olympic 

Games: NZB Campino by Contendro is his number 

one choice.

Mark Todd from New Zealand has been one of 

the most successful event riders for three 

decades. “Luckily the sport of riding is one of the 

very few athletic avenues where age and experience 

are an advantage,” the 56-year old explains. 

He has not lost any of his ambition or energy. His 

bright blue lorry is his home from April to September. 

You must attend eventing competitions, if you 

want to meet him. The opportunity presents itself 

in Luhmühlen where he participates in a four-star 

competition. “I always liked Luhmühlen. First I 

came in 1986 with Charisma and I won,” says 

Mark Todd as he gets comfortable in his camping 

chair. He set the highest expectations for himself 

from the beginning of his career when he participated 

in Badminton in 1980 as an unknown rider

and won and has kept to them until now. Three 

victories have followed his first one in Badminton 

next to his five victories in Burghley. Winning gold 

at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 and 

in Seoul in 1988 makes him immortal. He won on 

unforgettable Charisma both times. The FEI awarded 

him the title “Event Rider of the 20 th Century.” 

He withdrew from competition after winning the 

individual bronze medal in Sydney in 2000 to attends 

to the breeding and training of racehorses in 

New Zealand. 

Eight years later he made an unexpected comeback 

only a few months before the Olympic Games 

in Hong Kong and started an event barn in England. 

“It happened out of a party frame-of-mind,” 

Mark Todd says today in retrospect. And what a 

comeback it became: After a seventeenth place at 

the Olympic Games he won Badminton in 2011 for 

the forth time, 31 years after his first triumph - unbelievable! 

This makes him the oldest winner in 

the long history of the prestigious event. He who 

calls himself an Adrenalin-junky cannot escape the 

fascination of performance sport and of the Olympic 

Games, “The Olympic Games still are very special 

to me. No matter whats sport in, the games 

mean for everybody something. I am as keen now 

as I was at my very first Olympic participation 26 

years ago” These will actually be his ninth Games 

if you include the Moscow Games in 1980 which 

were boycotted and the Athens Games in 2004 

where he participated as a coach. 

When Mark Todd returned to the sport as an active 

competitor in 2008 eventing underwent a revolutionary 

change. The structures and the dimensions 

of the jumps do not have much in common with 

the jumps and courses of the 80s and 90s. Much 

has been done for the safety of horse and rider; the 

competition format has changed. “The change of 

the format of eventing certainly favours horses 

with better movements today. In earlier times one 

needed a brave horse; today you need a horse that 

will have high scores from dressage onwards,” 

says Mark Todd. After all one can only hope for 

fellow competitors to make mistakes in crosscountry 

and in stadium jumping as it is impossible 

to improve one’s own score. In earlier times Thoroughbred 

horses dominated this sport. German 

riders and horses might have won the dressage 

but then they were not fast and tough enough on 

the cross-country course. This has changed over 

the past years. “The sport is more open now. However 

you cannot learn the unwavering will to win; 

that must be part of your makeup!” Mark Todd is 

also drawn to Germany to look for Thoroughbred-

influenced talents. “The advantage of horses that 

are not entirely of Thoroughbred origin is that you 

can put more positive pressure on them. You have 

to ride with a more demanding attitude, though. 

Thoroughbreds seem to be more naturally and offer 

more from themselves in the dressage ring,” 

says Mark Todd. “I did not have to change my riding 

style. Over the past thirty years I have ridden 

so many different horses that I have no problem 

adapting quickly to each situation.” 

Buying trip in Germany 

He seemed to have the perfect horse for the Olympic 

Games with Badminton-winner NZB Land Vision. 

An injury put an end to his ambitious plans. 

Mark Todd would not be Mark Todd if he did not 

have top-level alternatives in his barn. Now he is a 

member of New Zealand’s team for London with 

10-year old NZB Campino. This son of Contendro/ 

Pinkus descends from the breeding program of 

Hans-Jürgen Abel from Bremervörde. Campino’s 

granddam, St. Pr. mare Wandia, delivered Soleil by 

Star Regent xx who is an internationally successful 

eventer with rider Andreas Dibowski. Mark Todd 

found Campino during a visit at the barn of Dirk 

Schrade whilst looking for talented horses in Germany 

for clients. Campino had already won jumper-horse 

classes at the M-level under Lutz Gripshöver. 

Campino had placed forth at a CIC* with 

then 17-year old Ben Leuwer on the Rodderberg. 

Dirk Schrade noticed the dark bay at that event 

and took him to his facility for his student Kenko 

Sato from Japan. The bay quickly got the nickname 

Kinky in the barn. 

“Campino is always in a good mood; he is a friendly 

and rather introverted horse. He felt like a horse 

I could go on and train him easily. He was quite 

spooky in the beginning. He spooked at every little 

thing. He moves well and is a very good to train. 

He jumps well, too. When I bought him I was not 

100-percent convinced of Kinky’s ability to be an 

international horse,” Mark Todd remembers. “But 

he proved to be of the winning type!” In his first 

competition in 2010 Campino and Mark Todd won 

a CCI** in Hartpury. “I took him along as often as 

possible so he could develop trust in his surroundings 

and see as much as possible. At the end of the 

season he did a lot of travelling and he was improving 

and improving,” says Mark Todd. Campino 

got better and better in 2011. He placed second in 

the CIC** in Saumur, finished in 15th place at the 

test event in London and was third in the CCI*** 

in Boekelo. Campino and Mark Todd created an 

excellent starting position for the Olympic year 

with a 2 nd place at the CICO*** of Houghton Hall. 

“I have rarely had a horse that is so trainable,” 

Mark Todd explains. 

There is a second Hanoverian horse stabled up in 

Mark Todd’s barn: The Chosen One by All in One/ 

Chief Singer xx (breeder: Ulrike and Reinhold Bosse, 

Sickte). “I only saw a video of The Chosen One 

before I bought him. His dam-sire is the Thoroughbred 

Chief Singer xx who is a wellknown racehorse 

in Great Britain,” Mark Todd says. “When I bought 

‘Squid’ he was about 16.2 hands; now he is huge 

measuring more than 17.3 hands. He is a good 

loocking horse. He is young though and still needs 

a lot of time to mature. I originally bought him to 

sale but he has developed phenomenally. It´s most 

likely that I will keep him.” Then he remembers 

Bago, a son of Winnebago by Winnetou/Wulf. 

Bago was bred in New Zealand. He competed him 

in jumping in Seoul. Then Mark Todd says with firm 

belief, “I love my Hanoverians!” 

“A high content of Thoroughbred blood is still of 

utmost importance when breeding event horses. 

The pedigree is not so important to me. Bloodlines 

are important, but horses are individuals. So much 

depends on the training and the rider. Therefore I 

never decide on a purchase from only looking at a 

pedigree. But I do listen to recommendations from 

experts.” Today the exterior of an event horse is a 

very important part. “If you have a horse with a 

bad conformation the risk of injuries is very high. 

And a good temperament is important” then Mark 

Todd adds with a smirk, “and I would never buy an 

ugly horse.” 

London is his goal - Mark Todd has made up his 

mind. “What comes after the Olympic Games for 

me? I do not know yet! I would be 60 in Rio in 

2016 …,” so he says, stirs his tea and smiles contently.

Germany won Aachen’s Nation Prize with convincing performances from Desperados 

and Kristina Sprehe as well as Diva Royal and Dorothee Schneider.

by A Jungle Prince/Hitchcock (breeder: Tanja 

Bull-Arp, Ihlienworth) into second place in 

the Grand Prix and in the freestyle at Vierzon/ 

France. 

Burlington (VA) 

The town of Hagen/Germany invited the rising 

generation of competitors to “Aachen 

for the Youth”. Two Hanoverians led in the 

classes for young riders. Burlington by Breitling 

W/Rohdiamant (breeder: Hans-Heinrich 

Oltmann, Borstel) won the team test unchallenged 

with rider Charlott-Maria Schürmann. 

Burlington laid the foundation for the German 

victory in the Nation Prize with this performance. 

The pair also won the final qualification 

and the freestyle. 

Ciowa 

Ciowa by Cheenook/Wittelsbach (breeder: 

Ulf Brandt, Stade) competed at the CDIO in 

Aachen/Germany with rider Carmen Naesgaard 

as members of the Spanish team. The 

team from the Iberian Peninsula finished in 

fifth place in the Nation Prize. 

Wirsol‘s Cipollini 

The German team of junior Riders won the 

Nation Prize in Hagen. Wirsol’s Cipollini by 

Compliment/Western Star (breeder: Dr. Dieter 

Schüle, Ansbach) received the second highest 

score with rider Vivien Niemann. The pair also 

placed second in the final qualification and in 

the freestyle. 

Condio B 

Condio B by Contendro/Willem’s As (breeder: 

Stephan Baumgart, Drochtersen) and rider 

Claire-Louise Averkorn were members of the 

German team that won the Nation Prize for 

Junior Riders in Hagen. 

Dablino FRH 

Germany’s female dressage competitors celebrated 

their victory in Aachen’s Nation Prize.

and rider Anabel Balkenhol contributed considerably 

to the victory with a forth place in

Fabienne Lütkemeier rode D’Agostino by De 

Niro/Shogun xx (breeder: Klaus Lahmann, 

Dassendorf) into forth place in the Grand Prix 

Special at the CDI in Aachen.

Belgium participated in the Nations-Cup of 

Rotterdam with only three competitors. The

team finished in third place. Daianira van de 

Helle by Dream of Glory/Ritual (breeder: Hermann 

Kothe, Wacken) with rider Vicky Smits- 

Vanderhasselt was a team member. 

Half Moon Delphi 

Michael Eilberg rode Half Moon Delphi by 

Dimaggio/Westwall (bred in Great Britain) 

into third place in the Grand Prix Special of 

Rotterdam. 

Der Clou

Desperados by De Niro/Wolkenstein II (breeder:

the CHIO in Aachen. Kristina Sprehe won the 

Grand Prix and the Special with impressive 

performances; the pair convinced and finished 

in second place in the freestyle. The German 

team won the Nation Prize.

Second place in the Grand Prix and in the 

Special for Devon L by De Niro/Wolkenstein II 

(breeder: Hans-Henning v. d. Decken, Stade) 

and rider Diana Creech at the CDI in Blainville/Canada! 

Diva Royal (VA) 

Diva Royal by Don Frederico/Warkant (breeder: 

Heinz Braul, Lehrte) and Dorothee 

Schneider impressed the spectators in Aachen. 

Sixth place in the Grand Prix, victory in 

the Nation Prize, forth place in the Special 

and a third place in the freestyle were the 

results of the successful weekend. These 

strong performances guaranteed a ticket to 

London. It will be there last ride, Diva Royal 

will be ridden by Stella Charlott Roth, the 

daughter oft Diva Royal‘s owner. 

Don Auriello (VA) 

Don Auriello by Don Davidoff/White Star 

(breeder: Joachim Poppe, Harsefeld) and rider 

Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven celebrated a double 

victory in Grand Prix and freestyle at the Nation 

Prize competition in Rotterdam. The pair 

laid the foundation for a second place in the 

Nation Prize for the Swedish team with these 

exceptional performances.

Isabell Werth travelled to Aachen with high 

hopes for her mount Don Johnson by Don 

Frederico/Warkant (breeder: Ulrike Meyer,

CDI after having placed third in the Grand 

Prix. 

Dow Jones 

Karina Prochaska from Austria placed third in 

the Grand Prix at the CDI in Brno/Czech Republic 

with Dow Jones by Donnerhall/Wendepunkt 

(breeder: Irene and Herbert Ilg, 

Weissach). 

Fabioso (Hess.) 

Fabioso by Flammengold/Sevillano xx (breeder: 

Wilfried Höhle, Edertal) celebrated his 

first international placement under the top 

five in Pompadour. Peter Storr from Great Britain 

rode the ten-year old into second place 

in Intermediaire I. In Vierzon/France the pair 

belonged to the best again winning Intermediaire 

I, placing third in the freestyle and 

forth in Prix St. Georges. 

Ferdi (VA) 

Ferdi by Federweißer/Charmeur (breeder: Johannes 

Hillmer, Rullstorf) and rider Maria von 

Essen placed forth in the freestyle in Stromsholm/Sweden. 

The pair received the second 

highest score in the Grand Prix. They placed 

forth in the Nation Prize in Aachen as members 

of Sweden’s team.

Flamenco Girl 

Three of four German team members rode 

Hanoverians in the Nation Prize for Junior 

Riders in Hagen including Flamenco Girl by 

Fielmann/Weltmeyer (breeder: Eberhard Hennings, 

Petershagen) with rider Maxi Kira von 

Platen. The judges placed this pair in forth 

position in the final qualification. 

Florencia (VA) 

Katarzyna Milczarek rode Florencia by Florianus/Davignon 

(breeder: Rudolf and Reinhard 

Bösch, Bülkau) to victory twice in Brno, first 

in the Grand Prix and then in the Special. 

Fontalero (VA) 

The riders U25 competed for the Prize of the 

Liselott and Klaus Rheinberger-Foundation in 

Aachen’s dressage stadium. Veronique Henschen 

from Luxembourg rode Fontalero by 

Werther/Weltmeyer (breeder: Arend Kamphorst, 

Prieros) into fifth place in the Grand 

Prix. 

Schon Hanovria 

Schon Hanovria by Florencio/Rubinstein was 

bred in France by Diana Chehowah-Grau. 

Now his breeder placed with him in the final 

for 6-year old dressage horses in Vierzon. 

Habitus (VA) 

Louisa Lüttgen was a member of the German 

Young-Rider quartet with Habitus by Hohenstein/Weltmeyer. 

The pair helped to win the 

Nation Prize of Hagen with the fifth-best result 

in the team test. 

Hilario Saint H (VA) 

Hilario Saint H by Herzensdieb/Acorado 

(breeder: Stefan Aust, Armstorf) and rider 

Bertille Perardy finished the final for 5-yr old 

dressage horses in third position at the CDI in 

Vierzon. 

Lully 

The winning pair of the Prix St. Georges in 

Vierzon came from Belgium: Lully by Likoto 

xx/Weltmeyer (breeder: Hubert Ratermann, 

Alfhausen) and rider Larissa Paulus. The pair 

finished Intermediaire I in third place. They 

placed second behind Kristine Möller and 

Reve en Noir in the freestyle. 

Moncassado 

Moncassado by Münchhausen/Weltmeyer 

(breeder: Matthias Ohmen, Stinstedt) and rider 

Petra Middelberg looked very good placing 

forth in the final qualification for young

riders at the CDIO-Y in Hagen. Moncassado’s 

dam is a right sister to former state stud sire 

White Star.

Montano by Mont du Cantal AA/Dynamo 

(breeder: Hinrich Winkelmann, Selsingen) and 

Suzanne Dunkley Zandvoort received their 

best international result so far in Vierzon. They 

placed forth in the Grand Prix Special. 

Reve en Noir (VA) 

Kristine Möller won Intermediaire Freestyle 

on Reve en Noir by Riccione/Lanthan (breeder: 

Jürgen Niehs, Tülau) after placing second 

in Intermediaire I in Vierzon. 

Ronan Keating 

The judges gave the fifth-highest score of the 

Prix St. Georges of Pompadour to Fabien Godelle 

from France and his mount Ronan Keating 

by Ravallo/Cavalier (breeder: Cord Badenhoop-Clausen, 

Neddenaverbergen). 

Salinero 

Salinero by Salieri/Lungau (breeder: Horst 

Bünger, Essel) and Anky van Grunsven earned 

their tickets to London at the CDIO in Rotterdam. 

The pair placed fifth in the Grand Prix, a 

result that contributed to the victory of the 

Nation Prize for the Dutch team. The Hanoverian 

dual victory in the freestyle was a reason 

to celebrate: Don Auriello first place, Salinero 

2nd place. 

Santana (VA) 

Minna Telde and Santana by Sandro Hit/Ru- 

binstein (breeder: Ingo Pape, Hemmoor) represented 

Sweden for the first time as a 

member of the Nation Prize-team that placed 

second behind the Dutch team. 

Socrate de Hus (VA) 

Socrate de Hus by Stedinger/Trajan (breeder: 

Dr. Thomas Müller, Dangersen) entered 

Aachen’s dressage ring for the first time. He 

finished Intermediaire I in fifth place with rider 

Jessica Michel. 

Warhol 

One of the most successful Hanoverians at 

the CDI in Vierzon was Warhol by Warkant/ 

Saint Cloud (breeder: Friedrich Sievers, Gifhorn) 

placing forth in Intermediaire I with rider 

Francoise Hologne Joux. 

Whisper (VA) 

The preparation for the Olympic Games 

brought Whisper by Wolkenstein II/Grenadier 

(breeder: Klaus Kamps. Cuxhaven) and Hiroshi 

Hoketsu to Lipica/Slovenia. The Japanese/ 

Hanoverian combination finished the Grand 

Prix and the Special in second place. 

Wolkenfroh 

The Swedish Junior Equip finished third in the 

Nation Prize in Hagen. Mathilde Hannell and 

her Wolkenfroh by Wolkenstein II/Matcho AA 

(breeder: Horst Ebeling, Hollnseth) were 

team members. 

Wolke Sieben 

The German Young Riders won gold in the 

Nation Prize of Hagen. Wolke Sieben by Wol- 

Embassy II and Hans-Dieter Dreher were sensational 

second in Monte Carlo and Aachen. 

kenstein II/Hitchcock (breeder: Kurt Griemsmann, 

Bülkau) and Sanneke Rothenberger 

were the combination with the second best 

result. The pair also finished the final qualification 

and the freestyle with a second place. 

Jumping 

A Crazy Spirit FRH 

The Hanoverian Association of supporters of 

Sport Horses and riders proudly presents 

another FRH-horse: A Crazy Spirit FRH by 

Acorado/Picard (breeder: ZG Bormann, Hüddesum). 

He and his rider Friso Bormann 

traveled to the Derby in Hickstead/Great Britain 

after his sensational performance in 

Hamburg’s Derby. The pair placed fifth in the 

first qualification. 

HH Ashley 

Rodrigo Pessoa rode HH Ashley by Acorado/ 

Chasseur (breeder: Helmut Siefkes, Holtland) 

to victory in the second qualification for the 

Grand Prix at the CHIO in Rotterdam/Netherlands. 

The pair continued on to Monte Carlo/ 

Monaco where they placed fifth in the qualification 

for the Grand Prix. 

Loro Piana Athletica 

The Polish CSIO took place in Sopot. The Italian 

team finished second behind Germany in 

the Nation Prize. Athletica by Achill-Libero H/ 

Pit (breeder: Arend Kamphorst, Prieros) and 

rider Giulia Martinengo Marquet did not 

have to do the second round after a faultless 

first round. 

Caipirinha 

Caipirinha by Chequille/Lacros (breeder: Hubert 

Knigge, Ahlden) and rider Astrid Wulschner 

placed fifth in the second jumper class of 

the Youngster-Cup after a faultless round in 

Gera/Germany on the first weekend. 

Campagnarde 

Campagnarde by Carabas/Cheenook (breeder: 

Hubert Knigge, Ahlden) and Sebastian 

Haas finished the Grand Prix of Canteleu/ 

France in forth place. The pair repeated this 

placement in the Grand Prix of La Clusaz/ 

France.

Canberra 

With “Stars and Stripes” on her saddle pad, 

Canberra by Carismo/Acord II (breeder: Karl 

Wuestefeld, Duderstadt) competed successfully 

in week one at the CSI in Gera. Erin Characklis 

rode the eleven-year old in an S-level 

class of the Silver Tour and placed third. 

Cantara (Hess.) 

Cantara by Cristo/Cassone was one of the 

successful horses in the Youngster-Cup on 

the first weekend in Gera. She won the introductory 

jumper class for six-year olds with 

her rider and breeder Thomas Brandt from 

Winsen. 

Casigo 

The five-year olds competed at the international 

level in Gera. Thomas Brandt rode the 

self-bred Casigo by Cassus/Escudo into second 

place in the first qualification during the 

first week. The pair finished the final in third 

place. 

Classic V (Hess.) 

Classic V by Calido/Landgraf (breeder: Ralf 

Litz, Eiterfeld) and rider Claudia Gisler from 

Switzerland placed fifth in the first jumper 

class against the clock at the CHIO in Rotterdam. 

Chambertino 

Lipica/Slovenia was the host for the jumper 

riders one week after the CDI. Only three riders 

made it into the jump-off for the Grand 

Prix. Although Chambertino by Contendro/ 

Dynamo (breeder: Rolf Blohm, Landesbrück) 

and rider Vladimir Beletsky had the fastest 

time they finished in second place because of 

one jumping fault. 

Checker (VA) 

Checker by Contendro/Glorieux (breeder: 

Rolf Eggerking, Brinkum) was already impressive 

on the foal auction in 2005. He 

placed third in the first jumper class and in 

the final of the Youngster-Cup with his rider 

Philipp Schober seven years later in Gera. 

Checkmate 

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum tackled up her 

proven Checkmate by Contender/Pik Bube II 

(breeder: Renate Gerlach, Sulingen) in Spangenberg 

placing second in a jumper class 

under the lights. 

Chico 

Chico by Cordalme/Sandro (breeder: Dietrich 

Schulze, Wedemark) appeared completely 

unimpressed by the majestic backdrop at his 

first competition in Aachen’s riding stadium. 

The seven-year old finished the final of the 

Youngster-Cup in second position with his 

rider Philipp Weishaupt after placing fifth in 

the first qualifying class. 

Codex One (VA) 

Codex One by Contendro/Glückspilz (breeder: 

Wilhelm Berghorn, Stolzenau) and rider 

Christian Ahlmann placed fifth in the Grand 

Prix of Spangenberg/Germany. The pair had 

reason to celebrate in Aachen two weeks later. 

The pair not only finished in second place 

with the German team after two faultless 

rounds in the Nation Prize but also qualified 

for the Olympic Games in London. 

L. B. Con Amore (VA) 

We saw numerous winning Hanoverians including 

Con Amore by Contender/Voltaire 

(breeder: Heiko Oltmanns, Neuengland) at 

the CSI in Spangenberg. Angelica Augustsson 

won the first qualification for the Grand Prix 

with her. 

Contessa 

We do not want to forget mentioning another 

success story from Hamburg’s Derby: 

Contessa by Conteur/Acorado (breeder: Heide 

and Helmut Peters, Hammah) won the 

second division of the opening jumper class 

with rider Oskar Murawski from Poland.

The Equestrian Days at Steinhagen took 

place on an international level for the first 

time. Corvin by Contendro/Athletico (breeder: 

Katja Ahlemann-Wobbe, Hellwege) and 

rider Tim Rieskamp-Gödeking entered the list 

of the best as the first winners of the Grand 

Prix after placing third in the first qualification. 

Crossing Jordan 

A faultless round in the Grand Prix of Bosserheide/The 

Netherlands meant fifth place for 

Crossing Jordan by Champion du Lys/Calypso 

II (breeder: Jürgen Ernst, Essel) and his rider 

Nicolas Pizzaro. 

AD Ashleigh Drossel Dan 

Drossel Dan by Drosselklang II/Ashleigh Brigadier 

(breeder: Colin Gronn, Australia) and 

rider Alvaro de Miranda finished an S-level 

jumper class with victory round in fifth place 

with the fastest 4-penalty result in Aachen. 

Embassy II 

Embassy II by Escudo/ Calypso II (breeder: Dr. 

Bonny-Jasmin Jacobs, Bierbergen) and his rider 

Hans-Dieter Dreher placed forth in the 

first qualification for the Grand Prix of Pforzheim. 

The pair did very well on the Global 

Champions Tour in Monte Carlo placing fifth 

in a two-phase jumper class, forth in a jumper 

class with jump-off and second in the 

Grand Prix earning prize money in the 

amount of 57000 Euros. Only two pairs remained 

faultless in the jump-off. The European 

champion from 2009, Kevin Staut, was 

victorious. Embassy II placed second after an 

exciting jump-off for the Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia 

at Aachen’s Soers. He had already 

finished the opening jumper class in 

second place. The grand finale for both was a 

forth place in the Grand Prix. 

Emilie de Ravin 

Emilie de Ravin by Escudo/Calypso II (breeder: 

Carsten Meyer-Nordhorn, Raddestorf) 

and Dieter Smitz finished the first jumper 

class of the Youngster-Tour in second place in 

Spangenberg. The mare has been ridden by 

the breeder in competition until now. 

Enigma (VA) 

Enigma by Escudo/Drosselklang II (breeder: 

Sophie Fangmann, Brockum) and Sandra Piwowarcyk-Baluk 

placed fifth in the Youngster-Tour 

of Sopot. The rider had bought the 

black-bay on the foal auction in 2006. 



Sport 

Hanoverian News 

Stella Hagelstam became the Finnish dressage 

champion. She rode Soraya II by Sandro 

Hit/Donnerhall (breeder: Wilhelm Borchers, 

Gross-Lessen). The bay mare had 

participated in Verden’s summer auction in 

2006 where the dressage rider discovered 

her. 

Donatha S by Donnerhall/Pik Bube (breeder: 

Klaus Lahmann, Dassendorf) is enjoying 

time as a broodmare in Rheinberg. Master 

trainer Dr. Uwe Schulten-Baumer bought 

the chestnut mare on Verden’s elite auction 

in the spring of 1998. The now eighteenyear 

old was one of Germany’s best dressage 

horses with rider Ellen Schulten-Baumer. 

She competed at the European 

Championships in La Mandria and in Windsor. 

The sire of her filly Jule is the KWPN-sire 

Jazz who is a highly successful competitor 

himself. 

Donatha S with her foal Jule. 

A wild card was applied for Connaisseur by 

Con Amore/Donnerhall (breeder: Fenna 

Schulte-Landwehr, Suddendorf), a youngster 

who was born in Hanover, is owned by 

Canadians and is ridden by a Dutch competitor. 

The wild card is for participation at the 

World Championships for young dressage 

horses in Verden. The five-year old started 

his career as a breeding stallion in the Swedish 

National Stud Flyinge after his approval 

in Westphalia and before dressage competitor 

Emmelie Scholtens took him in 

training. 

Espoir (VA) 

Sebastian Adams tacked up Espoir by Escudo/Calypso 

II (breeder: Eberhard Jordan, Ehra-Lessien) 

for participation in the Gold Tour 

on the first weekend in Gera. The pair placed 

third in a time and fault jumper class. 

Ex escudo orior 

Ex escudo orior by Escudo/Calypso II (bree- 

der: Hinrich Bartels, Wittingen) and rider Udo 

Kloetzel placed fifth in the opening jumper 

class at the international Amateur-Tour in 

Spangenberg. The pair won a speed class and 

took a second place in a two-phase jumper 

class for the SML-Trophy in the first week of 

the Summer Meeting in Gera. 

Felix XXVIII 

Felix XXVIII by Forsyth/Waldstern (breeder: 

Gestüt Pfaffenau, Biblis) placed third in a 

speed class with rider Marie Pellegrin-Etter at 

the CSI in Fontainebleau/France. Bernd Herbert 

who also discovered the unforgettable 

E.T. FRH trained the eight-year old. 

Fidji Island 

Katharina Offel participated with Fidji Island 

by For Feeling/Wanderer (breeder: Hinrich 

Löhden, Ahlerstedt) in the Derby of Drammen/Norway 

and placed fifth. 

Fit for Fun 

Fit for Fun by For Pleasure/Fabriano (breeder: 

Sigrid Crome-Sperling, Lutter a. Bbge.) enjoyed 

a fifth position in the final of the Youngster-Cup 

at the CHIO Aachen. This was the first 

competition in which rider Luciana Diniz had 

presented the state’s premium mare. She had 

received a score of 10,0 for her jumping style 

and ability in the mare performance test. 

Fligh High RD 

A fifth place in the final was the highlight for 

Fly High RD by For Pleasure/Landadel (breeder: 

Robert Diestel, Adelheidsdorf) and rider 

Carsten Averkamp at the Medium Tour of 

Steinhagen. 

Flotte Deern 

Denise Sulz rode Flotte Deern by Forsyth/ 

Acord II (breeder: Hermann Meyer, Allwörden) 

into an excellent third place in the second 

qualification for the Grand Prix of Steinhagen. 

Fogerty 

Hans-Joern Ottens and his mount Fogerty by 

For Keeps/Rio Branco (breeder: Hinrich and 

Margareth Hashagen, Geestenseth) returned 

home to Ueterlande from the competition 

days in Steinhagen with two third-place ribbons. 

One was from the qualification of the 

Medium Tour. 

Forry Deluxe 

Jan Wernke rode Forry Deluxe by For Pleasure/Landadel 

(breeder: Wilhelm and Heike 

Strunk, Bochum-Siepel) to victory in the 

Youngster-Tour at Pforzheim/Germany. The 

pair had placed forth in the qualification earlier 

on. The pair won the second qualification 

for rising youngsters in Spangenberg one 

week later. Seconds decided the winning ride 

in the final. Forry Deluxe placed third, two 

tenth of a second behind the winner. 

George 

One of the most important shows in Calgary/ 

Canada is called “Canada One”. Jill Henselwood 

and his mount George by Garant/Don 

Juan (breeder: Carsten Wiedemann, Uelzen) 

finished in fifth place in a 1,60 m-jumper 

class. 

Gladiator S 

Only one pair remained faultless in the final 

of the SML-Tour Large on the first weekend 

in Gera: Gladiator S by Graf Top/Zaandam 

(breeder: Ulrich Schlichte, Eschede) and Kendall 

Lauren Kruger from Hong Kong. 

Gotha FRH 

Gotha FRH by Goldfever/ Prestige Pilot (breeder: 

Jan Minners, Jork) had a convincing performance 

in the Nation Prize of Rotterdam 

after having fallen at the German Championships 

in Balve. Gotha FRH and her rider Ludger 

Beerbaum helped the German quartet to 

be victorious ahead of Sweden and France 

with only one time fault. 

Graciella 

Graciella by Graf Top/Acord II (breeder: Siegfried 

Buhl, Syke) and rider Pius Schwizer had 

a fast round in a speed class with high prize 

money finishing in second place after another 

second place in the “Jump and Drive” in 

Aachen’s Soers. 

La Strada (Hess.) 

Bettina Eufinger rode La Strada by Lucky 

Luke/Furioso’s Sohn (breeder: Claudia and 

Thomas Weier, Brechen) into forth position in 

an accumulator class of the Amateur-Tour in 

Spangenberg.

Sjaak Sleidering held his own on La Toya by 

Le Cou Cou/Argentinus (breeder: Wolfgang 

Michels, Lilienthal) against tough Dutch competition 

placing second in the Grand Prix of

“Future champions” met up at the CSIO-J in

Hagen/Germany. Beau Vandousselaere from 

Belgium delivered a convincing performance 

on Laetitia by Laptop/Baryshnikov (breeder: 

Christine Strube, Dallahn) in the Grand Prix 

for Juniors placing forth. 

Lantinus (VA) 

Lantinus by Landkönig/Argentinus (breeder: 

Henning Müller-Rulfs, Ritterhude) and rider 

Denis Lynch finished the Grand Prix of Rotterdam 

in fifth place. The pair had already 

placed fifth in the first qualification.

Ludwigs Dame by Ludwig von Bayern/Drosselklang

stood her ground in the final for sixyear-olds 

at the CSI in Bosserheide. Nina

the top-placed horses in Steinhagen. Rebecca 

Golasch rode the dark bay mare into forth 

place in a speed class.

Random Harvest by Raphael/Gardestern 

(breeder: Peter Mahler, Neuhaus/Oste) and 

rider Tobias Blotz started the Gold-Tour for 

amateurs with a victory in Pforzheim. The pair 

finished a speed class in fifth place with one 

rail but in fast time. The pair enjoyed a forth 

place in a 1,40 m-jumper class of the international 

SML-Tour on the first weekend in Gera. 

Random Harvest placed fifth in a two-phase 

jumper class. 

Satisfaction FRH 

Satisfaction FRH by Stakkato/Calypso II 

(breeder: Rainer Schulze, Burgdorf) and 

Marco Kutscher participated in a jumper class 

for the “Best of champions” finishing on an 

excellent third place in Aachen.

Savoy by Stolzenberg/Lordanos (breeder: Eitel

were rewarded with a fifth place after a faultless 

round in the first qualification of the international 

Youngster-Tour in Spangenberg.

Three jumper classes – three victories! 

Sensation’s Boy by Stakkato/Graf Grannus 

(breeder: Heinrich Bielmann, Burgdorf) and 

rider Thomas Holz won the Youngster-Cup for 

five-year olds after having already won both 

qualifications on the first weekend of the 

Summer Meeting in Gera. 

Shirin M 

Shirin M by Stakkato/Compliment (breeder: 

Ralph Mueller, Ahnsbeck) and Hauke Buchholz 

entered the CSI Youngster-Cup for seven-year 

olds with a promising second place 

at the CSI in Gera. A third place followed in 

the second class. The pair finished the final in 

second place.

Jörg Witte rode nine-year old Starado by

“It was a great experience with a 

phenomenal horse,” Andreas Dibowski said 

overjoyed. Andrew Hoy was in second place 

after a good dressage test and a flawless 

cross-country ride and before stadium with 

Rutherglen by Ramires/Roncalli xx (breeder: 

Gerhard Oestermann, Lübbecke). The pair finished 

the event in sixth place after three 

rails and time faults on the stadium course. 

The Hessian horse St. Daniel by Star Regent

finished in 15th position with rider Megan

Strong base in 

older classes 

The Association of the District Lüneburg organized the 

bi-annual Friedrich Jahncke-Show where regional associations 

present their best mares.

The Association of the District of Lüneburg 

celebrated its 90th anniversary. It was 

therefore very appropriate to be the host for 

the bi-annual Friedrich Jahncke-Show. The 

show grounds in Luhmühlen were selected as 

site and offered excellent conditions even 

when inclement weather set in. The organization 

team was highly motivated and guaranteed 

for a smooth-running event. The show 

started with three-year old jumper mares 

that were presented in the free-jumping chute 

- analogous to the Herwart von der Decken-Show 

- in the open air. This class consisted 

of 12 exceptional mares. St. Pr. aspirant 

Cleopatra RA by Clinton/Contender (breeder/ 

owner: Peter-Hermann Rabeler, Winsen/Luhe) 

took the lead with her phenomenal style. She 

showed far-sightedness and beautifully displayed 

her ability throughout her performance. 

She confirmed this outstanding impression 

on the triangle where exterior and 

movement are evaluated. St. Pr. aspirant 

Charita by Carlucci/Werther (breeder/owner: 

Richard Blanke, Wunstorf) followed in second 

place. This filly impressed with the caution 

she exhibited at each fence. 

One group consisted of only jumper mares in 

the division for four- to six-year olds. There 

were six in total. The free-jumping was eliminated 

for the four-year olds. St. Pr. aspirant 

Calinka by Count Grannus/Glorieux (breeder/ 

owner: Ute Meyer, Gorleben) was victorious 

in this division. This elegant and light-footed 

mare appeared very athletic with her well defined 

and striking body parts and her energetic 

movement. A Quality/Argentan daughter 

(breeder: Klaus Niemann, Petershagen; exhibitor: 

ZG Spurgat & Flechtner, Salzwedel) followed 

next. She also impressed with her 

good lines, her type and her powerful movement 

Just like the other top jumper mares. 

The champion mares, the reserve champions 

and a few other mares carried the Holstein 

C-blood combined with proven Hanoverian 

performance lines. The accumulation of Calypso 

II who appeared in many pedigrees on 

the sire but also on the dam side was remarkable. 

Holstein blood met with Hanoverian 

G-blood in both champion mares as well as 

in the reserve champion mare in the threeyear 

old division. This show once again confirmed 

that the formula C x G fits well. Because 

of the G-blood initiative the mare base 

with G-blood will expand in the future and 

the perspective of a combination with the 

younger Holstein C-sire generation will 

thrive. 

The dressage and jumper mares were combined 

in the division for three-year olds. A 

Sport 

Benetton Dream/Stedinger daughter (breeder/owner: 

ZG Sahlmann and Schmitz, Rosenthal) 

was the absolutely excelling champion. 

Paramount in her radiance with a very 

harmonious profile this filly always moved in 

rhythm and balance and with supple and 

uphill movement. A Floriscount/Wild Dance 

daughter (breeder: Angela Fitschen, Scheessel; 

exhibitor: Annelie Brunckhorst, Hollenstedt) 

was the reserve champion. This expressive 

mare disposed of stability in her 

construction. Her above average good walk 

was a highlight on the ring. 

St. Pr. aspirant Fräulein Fidertanz by Fidertanz/Don 

Cavallo (breeder/owner: Hermann 

Klindworth, Niendorf) won in the class for 

performance-tested mares. This well muscled 

and important mare had powerful and productive 

trot movement and an energetic 

walk. St. Pr. aspirant Dance for you by Depardieu/Friendship 

(breeder/exhibitor: Zuchtstaette 

Michael Schenk, Niendorf) earned the 

1b-prize. This striking black filly was able to 

really develop impulsion. 

The three-year old dressage fillies without 

performance test results were divided into 

two groups. St. Pr. aspirant Sissy N.B. by Soliman 

de Hus/Weltmeyer (breeder/owner: Nicole 

Bässmann, Meitze) became the winner 

of the first group. This incredibly typy mare 

appeared overall to be strongly influenced by 

Thoroughbred blood. Her moving mechanics 

reflected great smoothness and elasticity. St.

Pr. aspirant Hoheit by Hochadel/Wolkenstein 

I (breeder: Andreas and Kerstin Wichers, Cuxhaven; 

owner: Nicole and Friedrich Sievers, 

Gifhorn) received the Ib-prize. This filly impressed 

with her radiance and her strong and 

secure rhythm from which she easily developed 

her trot movement. 

Another Soliman de Hus-daughter was in the 

lead in the second division. Karl-Heinz Meyer 

from Walsrode bred her out of Dawina by Davignon. 

The filly’s strong type resembled her 

sire’s type. Yet another Soliman de Husdaughter 

out of a De Niro-dam (breeder/owner: 

Peter-Hermann Rabeler, Winsen/Luhe) 

followed in second place. Both fillies exhibited 

strong riding horse qualities. The stallion 

Soliman de Hus certainly made a statement 

as the sire of two division champions and 

two additional high-placed fillies. It was interesting 

that two of his daughters carried the 

blood of Donnerhall on the dam side of the 

pedigree just as he does. All his daughters 

are typy and light which reflects his refining 

influence. 

The four-year old dressage mares were also 

divided into two groups. St. Pr. aspirant Rihanna 

by Romanov Blue Hors/Rotspon (breeder/owner: 

Heinrich Bohm, Gilten) won the 

first division. She delivered an impressive 

performance. The generous development of 

her impulsion in the trot coincided with a 

very good uphill tendency. St. Pr. aspirant 

Donna Dancier by Dancier/Tycoon (breeder/ 

owner: Geert Brenninkmeyer, Hamburg) 

closely followed as reserve champion. Her

dam while Dancier’s influence showed in her

Breeding highlights 

The class for halfbred mares is one of the 

breeding highlights on larger mare shows. 

There was only one group for two- to six-year 

olds due to the small numbers. St. Pr. mare 

Santina by Sunlight xx/Wanderer (breeder: 

Gerhard Westermann; exhibitor: Jürgen Westermann, 

Salzhausen) became class champion. 

The high quality of her walk was impressive 

in addition to her powerful trot 

movement. The youngest filly of the group 

became reserve champion. A two-year old 

daughter of Lauries Crusador xx/Donnerhall 

(breeder/owner: Dr. Bianca Helmcke, Jameln) 

exactly embodies the mare model that we 

love to see in a halfbred mare. St. Pr. aspirant 

Wedemark’s Diva by Weltmeyer/Golfclub 

(breeder/owner: Helmut Bässmann) won the 

division for five- and six-year old dressage 

mares. St. Pr. mare Frühlingsmelodie by Florestan/De

followed in second place. The solid connection 

in her back was impressive and allowed 

her to develop powerful movement. The disciplines 

of dressage and jumping were again 

combined in the division for seven-to nineyear 

olds. Two dressage mares took the lead 

here. St. Pr. mare Dornröschen by Don Frederico/Weltruhm 

(breeder: Ernst Paulus, Tespe; 

owner: Dr. Ernst-Dietrich Paulus, Tespe) 

received the Ia-prize. 

This active broodmare confirmed the quality 

of her type and her movement. St. Pr. mare 

Lilli M by Lauries Crusador xx/Sherlock Holmes 

(breeder/exhibitor: Claudia Mohlfeld, 

Bomlitz) followed in second place. Fully ma- 

tured she also impressed as a halfbred mare 

with high quality of movement. 

Twelve mares participated in the division for 

ten-year old and older mares which is a respectable 

number. The strong influence of 

Donnerhall also became apparent in the older 

mares. The champion and the reserve 

champion were Donnerhall daughters. St. Pr. 

mare Daylight by Donnerhall/Warkant (breeder: 

Joachim Schwarze, Obernkirchen; exhibitor: 

Thorsten Hogrefe, Stöcken) was awarded 

the Ia-prize. This thirteen-year old mare delivered 

an energetic presentation with great 

dynamics and first and foremost with a very 

productive walk. St. Pr. mare De Luxe by Donnerhall/Weltmeyer

Helmcke, Jameln) followed in second 

place. She is another valuable Donnerhall 

daughter because of her strong back and her 

good construction. Only one mare participated 

in the honorary class: St. Pr. mare Wild

Schwarze, Obernkirchen and exhibited by 

Thorsten Hogrefe, Stöcken. The now eighteen-year 

old impressed with her energetic 

appearance and her powerfulm and rhythmical 

movement. 

Two-year old class champion by Benetton 

Dream/Stedinger stood her ground amidst 

the two- and three-year olds on the final 

rings of the individual age groups. This mare 

was able to impress once again and in an admirable 

style in the afternoon after a very 

long day which indicates a very good attitude. 

The overall victory in the four- to sixyear 

old division went to St. Pr. aspirant Donna 

Dancier. The oldest mare in the show, St. 

Pr. mare Wild Card received a round of applause

day. The sun was still shining. Four families 

participated in the class for “dams with two 

daughters”. Andrea and Norbert Wulf from 

Schillsdorf presented the victorious jumpermare 

family consisting of St. Pr. mare Rosa 

Roth by Ramiro’s Son II/Grandferdinand and 

her two daughters by Valentino. This family 

that clearly expressed performance was 

awarded the title “elite mare family”. Family 

Hagemann from Parsau presented a group in 

the division “granddam-dam-daughter” that 

received a Ia-valuation which is very high. 

Helmut Bässmann presented three daughters 

by Weltmeyer and out of Gondola by Golfclub 

in the group “three daughters out of 

one dam”. he Friedrich Jahncke-Show demonstrated 

that the Association of the District 

Lüneburg is on a good path. The members 

dispose of a strong and proven base in 

the older divisions in addition to an interesting

Breeder‘s portrait 

Ahead of 

his time 

Horses have been bred at the Klintworths in 

Ohrensen near Bargstedt for at least four 

generations. The Klintworths breed Hanoverians 

in accordance with the region.

Grandfather Martin Klintworth on 

Sportlitze in 1950. 


Martin is the first name of great-granddad, 

granddad and dad Klintworth. The 50-year 

old farmer broke the tradition and named his oldest 

son Ole (now 15 years). None-the-less Ole 

plans to take over the family business one day. 

“My granddad and my dad were on the track of 

today’s modern sporthorses very early on. Both 

competed our mare Sportlitze very successfully in 

jumping competitions up to the S-level during the 

fifties and the sixties,” Martin Klintworth shares. 

Today’s damline traces back to the producer Sporno 

by Sportanzeiger II. The line is named after the 

homebred mare Kurflamme, born 1959, by Kurland 

II. Although her dam Sportlitze by Sporno is considered 

the founder of today’s breeding program of 

Family Klintworth. 

Sporno was known for his good jumping ability. In 

his time he was very popular with the breeders 

from the Elbe region. “One of his descendants was 

our chestnut mare Sportlitze. She was very big and 

her exterior did not at all correspond with the exterior 

of workhorses. Luckily my grandfather 

quickly realized the capabilities of the mare and 

did not sell her. He used her in competition and in 

his riding horse breeding program instead.” Her 

full-brother Scambolo was sold however and participated 

in German Championships several times 

with his riders Peter Schmitz and Karl Heinz Giebmanns. 

It was this rider Scambolo won a bronze 

medal with in 1963. The Klintworths did not only 

have a good sense for breeding horses; they also 

had the talent to ride. Until today they apply the 

following principle to the sale of horses, “I only sell 

horses I have trained and ridden. , I can only then 

stand behind the quality of my horses with a good 

conscience. That is the way it always has been in 

our family since generations.” Family Klintworth is 

Silke, Janina and Martin Klintworth. 

also partial to jumping which reflects in his breeding 

goal. “Great jumping ability distinguishes all 

our breeding horses; good rideability is important 

for competition suitability at the same time.” 

Best prerequisites 

In general all foals are raised in the home barn of 

Family Klintworth. The horses enjoy a healthy and 

horse-friendly upbringing on spacious fields. They 

grow up separated by age and sex under the best 

conditions. For example more than 20 hectares are 

available for colts/stallions to roam around on. Depending 

on ability colts are presented at the licensing; 

mares complete mare inspections and mare 

performance tests before their training is continued. 

Mares that receive the state’s premium award 

are earmarked for breeding. They must prove 

themselves in jumper horse classes beforehand 

though. The horses are are up for sale once they 

are four or five years of age. Generally the vintages 

in that age group are marketed and sold. “If you by 

a horse from me you get one that has participated 

in jumper horse classes at the A- or L-level; in other 

words the horses I sell are in training. Therefore 

also renowned riders like Carsten-Otto Nagel or 

Sören von Rönne come to us when looking for a 

rising youngster with potential.” 

For decades Martin Klintworth has afforded 

himself the luxury of keeping one or two suitable 

jumper horses for his own use. His father had already 

granted him this privilege. His serious jumper 

career began at the age of eighteen. He competed 

the seven-year old homebred Weinstein by Wiesenbaum 

xx in his first S-level jumper class on the 

Dobrock. Martin Klintworth competed a number of

horses in regional championships over several years. 

He even participated in the German Championships 

and placed well. The dark bay gelding 

Weinstein competed up to a proud age. He placed 

in an M-level class at the age of 24 with Jörg Klintworth 

who is Martin’s younger brother. 

Wiesenbaum xx - a lucky catch 

Using the Thoroughbred sire Wiesenbaum xx turned 

out to be a good decision for Family Klintworth. 

Today’s entire damline has its successful 

origin back to then. Two full-sisters to Weinstein, 

Weinbohla (1976) and Weinbrise (1977), both out 

of Kurflamme by Kurland II, delivered many exceptional 

jumper horses. Weinbohla successfully competed 

up to S-level and eight out of her ten foals 

did the same. Alcazar by Argentan became Bundeschampion 

in the division for 6-year old jumper 

horses in 1990. Afterwards he found his way to 

Japan. He participated in the Olympic Games in 

Atlanta. His full-sister Annabelle won Verden’s first 

free-jumping competition and the Hanoverian Riding 

Horse Championships. The mare Sevilla by 

Singular Joter and the gelding Aikido by Athletico 

out of Weinbrise successfully compete under rider 

Pia-Luise Aufrecht. Especially Aikido has been victorious 

in S-level jumper classes numerous times. 

Martin Klintworth placed up to the S-level with the 

mare Gilette by Glücksstern. Gilette received the 

state’s premium award and has delivered several 

competition horses. The mare Ricola by Rio Branco 

out of Weinbrise was a member of the Weser-Ems 

Cadre with her rider Yvonne Borgmann and is presently 

on the way to enter S-level jumper competitions. 

Her full-sister Ricoletta received the top 

score of 10,0 for her jumping performance in the 

mare performance test. Ricoletta delivered the very 

promising Ariba by Acorado I and Landina by Landor 

S. 

The successful competitor Fabriano by Wanderbursch 

who is the mount of today’s federal trainer 

Jonny Hilberath goes back to the dam line of Kurflamme. 

“The Hanoverian horse with its good jumping 

ability distinguishes itself through correctness 

and quality but also through its physical toughness. 

For instance our Weinbohla turned 30 years 

of age and Weinstein was top fit up to an advanced 

old age,” Martin Klintworth raves not only 

about the athletic abilities of Hanoverian horses 

but also about their robust health. He favors Thoroughbred 

influenced horses with good basic gaits. 

“I prefer riding sensitive horses. I do not just bank 

on so-called fashion stallions in my breeding program.” 

The list of producers is long. The horse 

breeder adheres to another principle of his 

ancestors. If a combination proves to be promising, 

the the sire will be used again if possible. “I have 

had very good experiences with this principle and 

success. I use a producer several times until I have 

two mares by him.” 

Fifteen outside mares join the family’s herd of ten 

broodmares on more than 100 hectares of fields in 

Ohrensen. “Mare owners can board their mares 

with me. The foals grow up here and are started 

under saddle. They can be picked up when they are 

trained.” Boarding horses is part of the business. A 

total of about 150 horses live in Bargstedt and 

about 20 foals are born every year. The riding facility 

includes two indoor riding arenas and a large 

outdoor riding/jumping ring. 

Martin Klintworth increasingly uses Verden’s auction 

program as a marketing tool in addition to 

selling horses directly from the farm. “Even though 

the demand for horses of quality is still big I have 

noticed a slight overall decrease,” Martin Klintworth 

views the future of his Hanoverian breeding 

program positively. His wife Silke supports him 

wholeheartedly. While Martin Klintworth has retired 

from actively competing his children Janina 

(20), Ole (15) and Pia (13) follow more and more 

in his footsteps. Now there are six horses that are 

not for sale in the stable. The children prove their 

abilities in competitions on these horses. After all 

Martin Klintworth does not want to break this family 

tradition either. n

Fritz Floto passed away 

Fritz Floto passed away on his farm in Canada 

at the age of 88. “The term Hanoverian 

and the name Fritz Floto are synonyms in 

North America,” That is how the Canadian 

magazine Horse Sport so appropriately describes 

the importance of this horseman from 

the old school. Fritz Floto was the pioneer for 

the Hanoverian breed in Canada and had a 

great influence on the development of the 

Hanoverian horse in the United States, too. 

He received the golden Honorary Pin of the 

Hanoverian Verband in 1980 for his services. 

The Department of Agriculture in Hanover 

awarded him the Golden Prize Medal for his 

services in building up and spreading the Hanoverian 

breed in North America. The German 

Equestrian Association awarded him the 

Gustav-Rau-Plaque in 1990. Fritz Floto was 

born in 1924 on Gaedebehn Farm in the district 

Malchin that is in Mecklenburg. He experienced 

the terrors of WWII as a member of 

a cavalry regiment and in the artillery in Russia. 

He emigrated to Canada in 1952. He 

settled down with his wife Erica in the vicinity 

of Guelph, Ontario, where they started a 

dairy farm. Fritz and Erica had two sons. He 

sold his cattle in 1968 and accepted a position 

with the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph. 

In 1961 he was able to purchase two 

Hanoverian mares called Windrose by Weiler 

and Fernanda by Fernjäger as well as the sire 

Weimar by Firnis. They had all just recently 

been imported to Calgary at that time. He 

laid the foundation for the Hanoverian Breed 

in Canada with these acquisitions. He imported 

several stallions in the following years in 

close cooperation with the Hanoverian Verband 

and the State Stud Celle. For instance 

Denar by Duft, Waidmann by Waidmannsdank 

xx, Ansturm by Adlerfarn II, Equuleus by 

Eindruck II, Sandsturm by Sendbote, Lepanto 

by Leibwächter and, at last, Welfenschatz by 

Walhall. He has distributed Hanoverian horses 

all over North America. Fritz Floto served 

the Hanoverian Verband as branding representative 

in Eastern Canada for decades. He 

was an honorary member of the American 

Dr. Ludwig Christmann presents the document 

with the honorary membership to Fritz Floto. 

Hanoverian Society and a member of the 

mare and stallion committee of the AHS. His 

opinion was always highly valued with respect 

to mares and stallions. Fritz Floto openly 

voiced his opinion in accordance with his 

Mecklenburg nature. You always knew where 

you stood with him and you could count on 

his word 100 percent. He was helpful, sincere 

and honest which many new Hanoverian 

breeders in North America quickly realized, 

respected and valued. The Hanoverian Verband 

in Germany and the Hanoverian breeders 

all over North America mourn the death 

of a great horseman who always had an 

open ear for every breeder’s concerns. n 

Breed Orientation Course 

From all over the world 

Thirteen Hanoverian breeders from Finland, 

France, Great Britain, Spain and the United 

States visited the breeding area the end of 

June to participate in the so-called breed orientation 

course. Participants visited several 

mare shows and stallion stations, the State 

Stud Celle and Adelheidsdorf. Visits to Hanoverian 

breeders as well as lectures on the 

breeding program and stallion lines complemented 

the one-week program. “The lectures 

on horse evaluation and - not to forget - all 

the visits with breeders, stallion stations and 

mare shows meant we saw and learned something 

new everywhere. The grand hospitality 

and the efforts from all sides to make us 

feel comfortable and welcome! It was phenomenal!
