HISTORY
Schlumbergera originates from the coastal
side of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
where it grows in the mountains at an
altitude of approximately 800 m. About
200 years ago, the first Schlumbergera arrived
in Europe, and since the early 1960s,
Gartneriet PKM has produced this beautiful,
durable plant, which we call FLAME®.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Since the 1970s, PKM has itself bred many
new Schlumbergera varieties. These new
varieties are marketed under PKM’s renowned
quality brand – FAIRYTALE FLOW-
ERS® – as our FLAME® Selection. Most
people are familiar with Schlumbergera
with buds of approximately 1–1½ cm and
many are under the impression that the
buds fall off easily.
Modern cultivation techniques and many
years of intensive breeding work mean
FLAME® is now an incredibly durable plant
that is easy to keep even in a modern,
busy family home. FLAME® Harvest Cacti
does not need much care and can keep on
blooming year after year.

NEW PRESENTATION MATERIAL
FAIRYTALE FLOWERS® has developed
some brand-new presentation material
that can be used with half and whole CCcontainers.
With a display box or a printed
poster showing FLAME® in full bloom,
customers can see that FLAME® is very
beautiful with open flowers.
We recommend bud sizes of 2–3 cm for the
retail trade. See page 5 for a photo of the
optimum bud size.

EXHIBITIONS
FAIRYTALE FLOWERS® takes part in many
different exhibitions each year, mainly in
Europe. You can find the dates and locations
on our website, www.fairytaleflowers.dk.
We would be pleased to work with you on
an exhibition – but planning well ahead is
important for optimum results. This year,
we have plans for joint exhibitions with
sales companies in Belgium, France, England
and Russia.

SEASON, COLOURS & POT SIZES
The FLAME® season launches in early
August and lasts through to the end of
December. Many associate Schlumbergera
with the Christmas season, but with a season
that lasts from late summer through
to the New Year, it is more aptly named the
HARVEST CACTI.
FLAME® is available in white, yellow,
orange, red, pink and purple, in pot sizes of
5½ cm, 9 cm, 11½ cm and 13 cm.
FLAME® fits perfectly into the modern
home because it does not require much
care. This makes FLAME® ideal for the
busy family who like to be surrounded by
flowering plants.
FLAME® has beautiful green leaves, accentuating
the buds and flowers. It takes
about three weeks for the buds to develop
into the fantastic, silky flowers. The multiple
buds look like little flames, which is why
we call our Harvest Cacti FLAME®.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS

roots should be kept dry

Campanula is available for purchase all year
round. The Schlumbergera FLAME® season
is from August to December, Rhipsalidopsis
FIRE® from January to March and Butterfly
Lavenders from May to August.
TRADE MARKS & PATENTS
Our products are registered varieties marketed
under the protected trade mark FAIR-
YTALE FLOWERS®. MEE®, WONDER®,
CROWNPRINCESS’s BELLFLOWER®,
FLAME® and FIRE® are also registered
trade marks. Accordingly, only FAIRYTALE

FLOWERS® produces the original GET
MEE®. We do not sell young plants or
semi-finished plants in Europe. PKM has
production under licence in North America,
Canada and Japan.
MADE IN KENYA
In 2008, PKM established a nursery in
Kenya. This means that in future, our
FLAME® has been in Kenya. Because PKM
refuses to compromise on our high quality,
all plant material is tested at PKM in
Denmark before being sent to Kenya. The
FAIRY FLOWERS® nursery covers 10,000
m 2 and is located close to Nairobi.
ENVIRONMENT
PKM has signed up to the international
MPS environmental certification system
which assesses the use of resources during
production from a holistic perspective and
imposes requirements concerning energy
consumption, use of fertilizer, plant protection
and waste management. Since 1 st June
2004, PKM has been classified in the best
category as an A-rated nursery.

INSPIRATION
FLAME® has a wide variety of uses, as a
potted plant and as cut flowers for bouquets.
Internationally recognised flower
designers including Nicolai Bergmann,
Nicolai Bergmann Flowers & Design - Tokyo,
Japan, and Birgit Nouri of Blomsterhuset
in Otterup, Denmark have created

amazing flower arrangements using
FLAME®. Nicolai Bergmann with stylish
inspiration from Japan and Birgit Nouri
with materials that accentuate and emphasise
buds, flowers and colours, all found in

AWARD
On 15 th June 2009, Gartneriet PKM A/S
received King Frederik IX’s award for excellence
in export. The award ceremony for
this prestigious prize was conducted by
HRH Prince Henrik at Fredensborg Slot. In
his citation, he emphasised that the prize
was awarded in recognition of the company’s
management and employees alike,
for the results achieved.
FAIRYTALE FLOWERS® IN BRIEF
The famous fairytale writer Hans Christian
Andersen was the inspiration behind the
decision to call our beautiful flowers FAIRY-
TALE FLOWERS®. Gartneriet PKM A/S was
founded by Kristian Madsen’s parents, Poul
and Marie, about 61 years ago. Kristian
Madsen took over PKM in 1989 and the
nursery now has 167,000 m 2 of greenhouse
area and 80,000 m 2 of outdoor area. Here,
170 skilled employees produce 20 million
plants yearly, approximately 85% of these
for export to the European market.
