Come Holy Spirit, 

fi ll us with your life. 

May the power of your Gifts enable us 

to move beyond our fears and anxieties 

so that we might follow your lead and guidance 

as we continue Jesus’ work 

of renewing the face of the earth. 

Amen. 

Th e Birthday of the Church 

I remember from my elementary school days hearing 

Pentecost being called the “birthday of the Church.” 

It was around the Jewish feast of Pentecost (the Feast of 

Weeks – seven weeks after Passover) and shortly after Jesus’ 

ascension that the Spirit, with a blast of wind and tongues 

of fi re, came upon the apostles as they were praying in the 

upper room. 

Before the coming of the Spirit, they were gathered full 

of worry and concern. Th ey were fearful and anxious 

because Jesus had left them and they didn’t know what 

would happen to them now that he was gone. Th ey were 

worried that they might they be arrested and killed as he 

was. Th ey were prayerful because Jesus taught them to 

pray in times of trouble and because Mary, who was such a 

model of trust in God, was with them. 

Th e Spirit came and they were transformed into men of 

enthusiasm and courage. Th ey left the upper room and 

went into the streets of Jerusalem sharing their faith and 

hope in Jesus with all who would listen. Th e Acts of the 

Apostles tells us that many became believers that same day. 

Th e Spirit is still alive in the Church today. We can never 

doubt or forget that. Th e Spirit is with us guiding and 

pushing and pulling us in the direction that God wants us 

to go. 

Th e challenge we have is to keep ourselves open to the 

Spirit’s guiding hand. 

Th e Spirit is always calling us as individuals and as a 

Church to live as Christ calls us to do and to give witness to 

Christ by proclaiming His teachings and values. 

It is the Spirit that gives the Church its life!

Stewards of God’s Gifts 

In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the Corinthians, “Th ere are diff erent gifts, but the 

same Spirit; there are diff erent ministries but the same Lord.” How am I using my gifts “for the 

common good?” 

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who recognize that each of us has been 

individually gifted by God, yet all our gifts, collectively, are needed to build God’s kingdom.

Baptism 

We celebrate Baptism at 2:00 PM on the Second and 

Fourth Sundays of the month. Please call to arrange for 

a pre-baptismal interview. Parents are required to attend 

a baptism preparation session held once every month. 

Th ose chosen as sponsors for Baptism should lead lives 

in harmony with the Catholic faith and the role of 

Godparent. 

Marriage 

At least six months before you plan to be married and 

before you make arrangements for the reception, please 

make an appointment with one of the priests to begin the 

necessary preparations. 

Children’s Education 

Saint Mary’s Elementary School off ers excellent education 

in the spirit of the Gospel from grades N, Pre-K to Eighth 

grade. For information call 627-0184. 

Saint Mary’s High School off ers a college preparatory 

education for the ninth to twelfth grades in the context of 

Catholic moral values. For information call 627-2711. 

Th e Faith Formation Program provides excellent formation 

in the Catholic Faith for children in public or private 

schools. Preparation for First Holy Communion and 

Confi rmation requires two years. All classes are held at 

Church of St. Mary | 4 

St. Mary’s. Grades 1 through 5 meet on Tuesdays and 

Th ursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 PM. Families choose which 

day. Grades 6, 7 and 8 meet on Mondays from 7:30 to

We reach out to our teens though our Youth Ministry

Opportunities For Prayer 

Th e Church is open Monday to Friday until 8:45 PM and 

on Saturday and Sunday until 6:00 PM so that we may 

have the opportunity for quiet prayer before the Blessed 

Sacrament. Th e Miraculous Medal Novena is said each 

Monday following the 9:00 AM Mass. Monday to Friday 

the Rosary is said following the 9:00 AM Mass. Eucharistic 

Adoration is held every Th ursday from 1:00 to 8:00 PM 

in the Chapel. On First Saturdays the Scriptural Rosary 

is recited following the 8:00 AM Mass. Each Monday 

evening a Rosary Service is held at 7:15 PM.

Virtus Training: 

Protecting God’s 

Children 

A good teacher is like a candle: 

it consumes itself to light the way for others 

Do you remember when you were a kid on the fi rst day of school? 

Th e teacher walks in and you have no idea what to expect. Will the 

teacher be nice, mean, funny, or serious? What will she expect of me? 

Th is is just how I felt when I fi rst started teaching exept from a 

diff erent perspective. Will the children like me? Will I be able to 

engage them, teach them, motivate them, love them and help them? 

How can I share with them my love for God and make their love for 

God grow? 

Th ose were my goals as a teacher, but I had to fi gure out how to be all that for my innocent students. I “googled” diff erent 

tricks of the teacher trade and through the years applied various motivating methods in my classrooms. Today, after 

teaching for six years, I can say that teaching is incredibly rewarding and fun. I couldn’t put into words how wonderful 

the experience is. Magic happens when children start looking into your eyes and proudly answer your question, when 

they eagerly raise their hand to participate, when you can hear a pin drop while you are reading from the Bible, and 

when the children give you their wise interpretations on life. My students taught me that stickers work much better for 

encouragement than just words. Games are a great way to see how much they have learned and listened. Quizzes are most 

fun when there is a prize to achieve (and I don’t mean just a good grade). 

Th roughout the year children will share so much about their faith and life; thoughts, fears, questions and passions are 

our most loved subjects. Our teaching book is a great guide for bringing on discussions and answering questions. It is 

comforting and helpful to use our study guide and Bible to enhance our knowledge and love for God. 

If you love children, I would highly encourage you to become a catechist for our St. Mary’s parish. It is one of the most 

satisfying times and memories of my life and I look forward to many more spiritual and wonderful years with “my 

children.”

Forms or pick up the forms outside the Faith Formation Offi ce. Please provide us with 

your current e-mail address on the form for future correspondence. 

Families new to our program, especially those with children entering FIRST GRADE 

during the 2011-2012 school year, should come to the Faith Formation Offi ce to fi ll out 

the necessary forms or call us at 627-4028 concerning the forms that can be downloaded 

from our website. We will need a copy of your child’s baptismal certifi cate. Please be 

aware that two years of Religious Formation are required before a child may receive First 

Eucharist or Confi rmation.Forms may be picked up outside the Faith Formation Offi ce, 

Monday-Th ursday, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon or 2:00 to 4:00 PM. 

Th e next Virtus training session at St. Mary’s will be held on Wednesday, June 

15th, 2011, at 10:00 AM in the Marian Room. You must register online at 

http://virtus.org. ALL volunteers in the parish and the schools are required to 

take this training and to fi ll out the required background screening and volunteer

Answer to last week’s question: What is the Jewish origin of the feast of Pentecost? Pentecost is a major feast in the Jewish 

calendar. Following the feast of Passover there were 50 days until the feast of the wheat harvest (Lev. 23:15-22 and Deut. 

16:9-12). Shavout, or the Feast of Weeks, came to be known also as Pentecost. It was celebrated at the Temple in Jerusalem 

when the fi rst grains of the wheat harvest were off ered to the Lord.

Basic Course on Liturgy and Sacraments 

Dr. Jo-Ann Metzdorff will off er the Basic Course on Liturgy and Sacraments on Monday, June 

27th to Th ursday, June 30th from 1:00-3:30 PM. Th is course is one of the required courses for the 

basic certifi cate in catechesis. Participants will be introduced to sacramental theology and liturgical 

practice of the Roman Catholic Church. Attendance is required all four days to receive credit toward
