Colloquium\n, pl: an academic meeting at which information is given on a topic or related
topics with questions answered related to them.
An Open Letter to the Graduating Class of 2007 from Carmel Catholic High School
In the popular Broadway play RENT the characters perform the song entitled, Seasons of Love
which answers the question, how do you measure a year in the life? The lyric response is:
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty five thousand moments so dear
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure a year in a life?
As I reflect on your impending departure from our daily life here at Carmel Catholic, I can’t
help but hum a derivation of that same song over and over in my mind, with these adaptations
– How do you measure fours years in our life together, countless hours, infinite minutes, too
short a time – all moments so dear.
All of us know that the world now summons you as young adults to assume your rightful place.
You have contributed your strength, your wisdom, your insight, and your gifts to us; it’s time for
you to go and do the same for others who need you. The compassion and understanding you
have shown us, take to your college campuses. The love and forgiveness you have shared with
us extend to each person who wrongs you (and there will be some!). The loyalty you have
shown to Carmel Catholic, now give to your workplaces and new friends.
While your life will take you to different places geographically, and your studies and new
interests will move you intellectually, remember that place in your heart that Kairos touched.
Remember in your heart the strange comfort you felt when you heard the words, “It’s 8:15 and
time for school to begin.” Remember the pride you had when you took back the town in
September with the win against Mundelein (remember?). Remember. And smile.
No matter where you go, no matter what your accomplishments or failures, you have a home
here. For the rest of your life, you have a home here. You are a proud Corsair and we send you
into the world that so desperately needs your goodness and your generosity and your talents.
All 1,300+ of us send you with such pride and respect and a twinge of sadness.
Jesus said it best when he told the disciples to go out among the people, spread the word –
make the world a better place. You are ready!
How do you measure four years in a life – Carmel Catholic High School.
We love you, now go get ‘em!
Carmel Senior Earns Prestigious Gold Key Art Award
Carmel Catholic senior Katie Roberts recently
earned a Gold Key art excellence award in the
2007 Region-at-Large Scholastic Art and
Writing Awards for her digital photograph
titled, "Damaged Bird House in Mississippi
After Katrina."
Carmel Catholic senior Katherine Roberts recently earned a Gold Key
art excellence award in the 2007 Region-at-Large Scholastic Art and
Writing Awards, a program of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, Inc.
Ms. Roberts won her Gold Key art excellence award in the Digital
Imagery category for an image titled, “Damaged Bird House in
Mississippi After Katrina.” This artwork was among 600 Gold Keys from
approximately 5,000 art submissions from across the nation to the
Region-At-Large Program of The Scholastic Art Awards. A select panel
of artists, educators and arts professionals such as curators, critics, and
editors judged the artwork.
“This is a remarkable achievement and milestone for Katie as a young
artist,” says Sheela Gladwell, Carmel Catholic Arts Instructor. “Katie’s
artwork was recognized by a
panel of art professionals and
now it will be sent on to the
national level of recognition in
The Scholastic Art Awards of
2007,” she adds.
Each year approximately 100,000 works of visual art from across America
are submitted to The Scholastic Art Awards by teenagers in grades 7-12
enrolled in public, private, parochial, home schools and arts education and
community organizations. These works are submitted to the 80 Regional
affiliates of the Alliance, and to the Region-at-Large administered by the
Alliance for Young Artists and Writers in New York City. Students whose
works are recognized as the most accomplished in Region-at-Large
programs earned a Gold Key Art Award.
Jr. High Math Students Excel At Carmel’s Annual Mathematics Competition
On an annual basis over the past twenty years, Carmel Catholic High School hosts a mathematics competition
targeted to area junior high schools, under the direction of Mrs. Ann Petraitis, CCHS mathematics instructor and
Department Chair. This year a record 23 junior high schools participated in the event. The math students were
asked questions regarding arithmetic computation, pre-algebra, basic geometry and elementary statistics and logic.
The event began in the mid-1980’s and the competition has continued to thrive ever since.
“The objective of this annual event is to encourage academic competition in preparation for high school
mathematics. Area junior high schools are invited to compete and the participating schools are divided into
sections depending on enrollment and grade level. The students love to compete and receive recognition for their
efforts,” explains Mathematics Department Chair, Mrs. Ann Petraitis.
Carmel’s Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society members helped to register and coordinate the 250 students who
were contestants. Special thanks for all of your efforts!
CCHS Guidance Department Offers Students College Planning Advice
According to the most recent statistics, ninety-nine percent of the students in the Class of 2007 have chosen to
continue their education at four-year and two-year institutions! The most frequently chosen schools were:
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois State University, Marquette University, DePaul University,
Purdue University, Loyola University Chicago, Western Illinois University, and the College of Lake County.
Looking forward to the Class of 2008, CCHS Guidance Counselors offer college planning suggestions:
Read the 2008 Carmel Catholic High School College Planning Guide!
Think about your reasons for going to college. What are your goals? Do your college plans include career plans?
Talk with your parents, counselors, teachers, and friends.
Identify important factors in choosing a college: two-year or four-year; location; cost; kind of atmosphere; variety
of study programs available; entrance test requirements.
List colleges you are considering, collect information, and visit colleges.
Plan on taking or retaking the ACT and/or SAT. There are numerous books and web sites available on how to
prepare for these tests.
Start checking into scholarships. If you plan to apply for scholarships, you will need to complete the majority of
your scholarship applications during the first half of your senior year.
Choose meaningful activities for the summer months. You may want to consider one of the summer programs
many colleges offer to outstanding juniors.
College Planning Suggestions for the Classes of 2009 and 2010
New Testing Preparation
Service Planned for the
2007/2008 School Year
Carmel Catholic High School Administration
is pleased to announce that the school has
contracted with TestWatch TestPrep Institute
to offer their services for Carmel’s ACT test
preparation for the 2007-2008 school year.
TestWatch TestPrep has been in the field of
test preparation since 1971. Currently, they
provide services to over 20 schools in the
Chicago area including Deerfield, Libertyville,
Stevenson, Lake Forest, Evanston and St.
Viator High School. This program replaces
the in-house ACT Prep that Carmel has
offered in the past. In addition TestWatch
will offer a PSAT Prep course. Parents of
students who will be taking these tests will
receive information in the mail regarding
this new service. The mailing will address
costs and the registration process.
Take some time to learn about college requirements and continue exploring careers. Review your four-year high
school curriculum plan. Review your EXPLORE and PLAN test results. Try job shadowing. Plan on getting involved
in extracurricular activities at school and in your community. Your college years are just around the corner! It is
important to plan ahead to ensure success.

Faith In Action — Carmel Students Support Operation Rice Bowl
Carmel Catholic’s Lenten Operation Rice Bowl project to benefit Catholic Relief Services and the special collection
to benefit the Carmelite Missions of East Timor both were very successful thanks to the effort and commitment of
the Carmel students. In one week, the students raised $3700 to benefit the Carmelite missions in East Timor. The
“Battle of the Bands” special fundraising event raised $1191 to benefit Operation Rice Bowl and $3467 was
collected through donations in the individual rice bowls located in the classrooms and cafeteria and "Fitz's coffee
can." In total, the students raised $8,358!
The Operation Rice Bowl project is sponsored and carried out through Carmel Catholic’s Student Council including
the Executive Board and homeroom representatives. The Battle of the Bands is a Tri-M event. Mike Fitzgibbons,
Director of Campus Ministry spearheaded the East Timor collection effort. Operation Rice Bowl, now in its 30th
year supports Catholic Relief Services’ development projects in 40 countries around the world as well as local
parishes. These projects include: agricultural enrichments, water sanitation, maternal/child health, micro finance
and job training. This Lenten tradition encourages students to put their faith into action.
Help Us Help Carmel!
Thanks to the generosity of two area retailers—
Dominick’s and Target—there’s a simple way for all
Carmel parents to help the school raise funds!
Dominick’s shoppers simply can pick up a Dominick’s
Fresh Values card at the store and then register the card
at www.escrip.com. Once your card is registered and
Carmel Catholic High School is designated as your
“school of choice,” Dominick’s will contribute up to 4%
of your purchases to the school every time you shop and
present your card. It’s that simple! Please take the time
to register your Dominick’s card so Carmel can benefit.
Every dollar matters at Carmel!
Target shoppers, through the stores’ Take Charge of Education program, simply need to visit target.com/tcoe or call
1-800-316-6142 to designate Carmel Catholic High School as your school of choice. Then, every time you use
your Target Visa or Target card a percentage of the amount of each purchase you make goes back to Carmel Catholic
in the form of a cash donation from Target twice a year. This money can be used for things that are not in the
budget, like new computers and equipment—items that can directly benefit the students.
Carmel’s 2006-2007 Annual Fund
Needs You!
Carmel Catholic’s 2006-2007 Annual Fund hopes to
surpass the $300,000 mark this year for the first time
in Carmel’s history! The school’s Annual Fund
supports many programs and people at Carmel
Catholic, helps to slow tuition growth and helps to
keep CCHS on the leading edge. While this goal is
attainable, it is only possible with your help! Your
participation is essential to helping the school reach
this goal of raising $300,000 to the Annual Fund. If
you have not yet contributed to the Annual Fund this
year, please consider doing so before June 30th. Your
contribution, at whatever level you can manage, is
important and will help the school to achieve this
goal and continue the great programs for which
Carmel is known. For more information regarding the
2006-2007 Annual Fund, please contact George
Rattin, Development Director, at (847) 388-3342.
By the time many of you read this, you will have received our annual Donor Proof in the mail. For those who have
not received it, the Donor Proof is a printed communication piece we use to communicate with our donors as we
draw close to the end of the Annual Fund year. It lists all of our donors in the categories in which they will be listed
in our fall Annual Report. We send this proof for several reasons. The Donor Proof allows donors to review how
their names are listed and categorized, correct any errors, reposition themselves to a new donor category, or add
themselves to the list of donors. While the Donor Proof serves a valuable function at CCHS, that isn’t the point to
this month’s article. This year, what struck me while reviewing the Donor Proof is the meaning behind the 800+
names on this document.
The Donor Proof provides a wonderful history lesson. The names of our supporters go back to parents and
grandparents who were involved in the creation of CCHS, to alumni who represent our founding classes and
beyond, to our current parents who actively support us with their time, talent and treasure, to friends who have
been inspired by our mission, spirit and community. All of these people work together to help Carmel provide the
best for its students. This has always been the Carmel way.
When you receive your Donor Proof, please use it to affirm or correct your gift listing, adjust your gift club giving
level or make a first gift of the year—use it as it was designed. However, when you are finished, please go back
and spend a few minutes reading the names of those who support the school. You will see alumni 40 years
removed from their graduation, still supporting their alma mater. You will see grandparents and past parents who
worked hard to help start a Catholic high school in Mundelein, helped to initiate Street Scenes…as well as so many
other traditions. By reading the Donor Proof you will be reading the Carmel success story—a story that faculty,
staff and administration, alumni, parents and friends together have helped to write.
Our community is strong, involved and diverse. Thank you to all who step forward, whether you are asked or not,
to help Carmel Catholic be the best it can be. You serve as positive proof of the vibrancy of our community and
you help to ensure that Carmel’s future remains full of possibility!
