COLLOQUIUM
FROM THE PRESIDENT
VOLUME 50, ISSUE 1
Dear Families and Friends of Carmel Catholic,
Welcome back to a new school year! I hope that the summer months provided many
opportunities for rest, relaxation and quality time with family. Besides all of the things going
on around the campus, namely construction and preparations for the 1:1 student computing
program, the summer brought one of my favorite four year events – the OLYMPICS!
I have never traveled to Europe so I was interested to learn about the U.K. I always think of
them as our distant cousins so it’s fun to see where our similarities and differences lie. Good
weather, national pride, historic places (the Tower of London!), a sitting monarchy – there were
many things I found fascinating about the host country. Of course the big stories came to the
viewers through the mini-biographies of the athletes. No two were identical but there certainly
were some common themes which transcended gender or type of competition.
Each athlete gave accolades to parents, coaches, teammates, sponsors, and members of
competing teams. Tales of long hours and hard work, skipped vacations and rigorous diets
were cited as some of the sacrifices that contributed to each one’s moment in time – this
competition. Among the hundreds of athletes, there was one who stood out as a most amazing
person, nothing any sports aficionado had ever seen.
His name is Oscar “The Blade Runner” Pistorius from South Africa. When I first heard of
him, I was sure that the commentator was previewing the Paralympics. I was wrong. This 25
year-old young man, double amputee before the age of one, was going to run in the Olympic
competition. I kept checking the schedule to make sure that I didn’t miss his race. This was an
event of historical significance. It was Sunday morning and I was watching the clock so as not
to be late for Mass. I watched him take his mark, listened for the pistol fire, and off he went
like nothing I had ever seen. Before he reached the finish line, I was reaching for a Kleenex.
I had just seen one of the most courageous people in the world. He did not think he would
win – he just wanted to RUN!
What is your race this year Where will you be called upon to exhibit courage Who will
be the people to support you Will you take that one shortcoming (we all have them) and
circumvent its power to limit you Will you turn it into strength and share it with the world
We have Corsair GOLD…
Sincerely,
Judith Mucheck, Ph.D.
From the Principal’s Desk…
When I became an English teacher,
oh so many years ago, my education
classes prepared me for teaching
writing, grammar and literature by
requiring my own personal study
in those areas. The additional
requirement of education classes
focused on lesson plan development,
Illinois Education Law, and various
learning theories. As I look back, I
realize that all of this had little to do
with what I now understand education
is all about.
My first few years were rough. I wanted to be the best teacher
and I thought that meant being the most popular. It was pretty
easy to be popular; I was 21 and my senior students were 18. I
wasn’t their teacher; I was their “BFF”. After six weeks I realized
I had absolutely no classroom management and when I tried to
recover that, I lost my popularity. They saw me as the “buddy”
who turned on them. As I approached my second year, I was
determined not to let that happen again, so I became the wicked
witch of the west – I had great control of the class, control built
on fear. In both cases I failed as a teacher.
Failure was a powerful lesson – much stronger and more effective
than anything I garnered from my education classes. I had
wanted to be a teacher my whole young life, I wasn’t about to
end in failure. I started my third year, only this time, I started
to focus on what education really needed to be, on what was
necessary for the kids as they struggled to learn and to grow. I
started to let go of myself and focus on what they needed. In a
sense, I needed to let them teach me. In doing that it became
very clear that my students, all students, needed more than
information for the sake of information, rather they needed to
understand the relevance of what they learn and how knowledge
reveals the truths and beauty of life. Along with this, I learned
that ignorance is a product of blind obedience and for that reason
students need to question and investigate and discover.
It is very gratifying to see that education in its evolution is now
built around this philosophy. It is no longer acceptable to be a
teacher who spouts information from the front of the classroom.
The successful teacher must be a facilitator who empowers
students to master learning through inquiry, analysis, research,
evaluation and comparison in order to draw conclusions of their
own. This is the platform that best prepares students for life long
learning and for life itself.
I learned that students need structure but they don’t need to be
controlled; they needed to be respected and challenged and
to understand that choices have consequences. They get the
structure they long for from knowing what is expected and from
a consistent response to failures to meet those expectations.
Respecting students means the educator must call them to
responsibility for their actions, a signal to them that we care
enough to respond and that we rely on their follow through.
This approach supports their maturation. In recent years I have
noticed that this philosophy contradicts a mindset in some social
circles that promotes denial, and a refusal to acknowledge
consequences while encouraging a pattern of deflecting
responsibility as the way to go. Placing blame, avoiding
challenges, promoting attitudes of entitlement accompanied by
a blatant disrespect for others are a direct contradiction to what
the students need to move into the world with a foundation
that strengthens them. This false message educates them to the
process of personal and moral failure.
I learned that students need a lot more than the academic lessons
to navigate life. They need to recognize their strengths in order
to build on them, their weaknesses in order to work on correcting
them, their own personal responsibility so that they can accept
the opportunities and struggles that come their way. They need
faith to sustain them, comforting them with the knowledge that
they are never alone and that they have purpose. They find
faith through experiences that validate the existence of God in
their lives: the love and support of family and friends, service to
the greater community which defines their value and purpose,
struggles and pain which allow them to discover inner strength.
These realizations began in my third year and continue to grow
to this day. The underlying current of all that I have learned rests
on the knowledge that holistic development is the only way to
define true education - education in which the components of
mental, physical, social and spiritual development work together,
each supporting the other for the purpose of allowing the child
to blossom.
Advancement News
It’s that time of year again. School has
begun and the hallways are buzzing
with the sound of student’s voices
and the (new this year!) clicking of
keys on their tablet computers. Board
committees are back in full swing as
the leadership of the school returns
to address the present reality and the
future plans for Carmel Catholic. These
signs of life on campus leave no doubt
that it is time to kick-off our Annual
Fund campaign.
Our Annual Fund addresses the void between the cost of tuition
and the actual expense of operating this magnificent educational
institution. The theme of the campaign remains the same:
One Goal, One School, One Community. The items the fund
underwrites, however, do change each and every year. This
year our donors will provide for new whiteboards in classrooms,
choral risers for the Auditorium, instructional software for the
Business Department, and upgrades to our computer network.
Visible or invisible, used by your family or your friends, these
elements will allow Carmel students to experience an education
consistent with the demands of the 21st century.
As a new member to the Advancement Office, I am grateful to
be writing to you today. I come to this position having served
for two years as the Director of Student Activities. That position
allowed me to experience first-hand the joy of being a member
of the Carmel Community. While I was leading activities and
working with clubs I was also completing a master’s degree in
Nonprofit Administration. I join Carmel’s class of 2012 in having
celebrated my graduation in May.
As a member of one of Carmel’s founding communities, I am
grateful to bring my many years and varied experiences here. I
am grateful to have the opportunity to offer my expertise to this
wonderful school that is grounded in faith and guided by the
spirit and charisms of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin
Mary (BVMs) and the Order of Carmelites (O.Carms.).
It’s that time of year again. May it be a wonderful time for
you, too!
Blessings,
Carmel at the Threshold—
Library Update
With all of the construction going on in the building, the library
has moved to room 605 until our gorgeous space is completed.
This is a prime spot for us to view the construction of the new
library space.
With students working with tablets this year, we anticipate a
growth in information use. With this use comes responsibility. This
is where the library fits into the puzzle. We provide students with
numerous online databases for scholarly research, help students to
become analytical about the way they research, and help students
follow through by giving credit to the creators of the information.
All of this is called “information literacy” and you can learn more
about it by visiting http://www.ala.org/aasl/guidelinesandstandards/
Student Services
August was an exciting month as we welcomed our freshmen to
Carmel Catholic and assisted them in transitioning into their new
school. We are proud of our school’s freshmen orientation process,
and stress with parents the importance of making connections early
with school personnel.
This year we are welcoming the new 1:1 tablet program by
incorporating the tablets into our counseling program. Students
will receive electronic passes on their tablets inviting them to
meet with their counselors. Students are assigned counselors
based on the alphabet (first letter of their last name). Counselors
see students regarding academic, social, and general concerns
that arise during their daily activities. During these meetings
counselors review the students’ four-year plans, grade point
averages, and discuss career goals. As students approach their
junior and senior years, counselors assist students in matching
colleges with their career choices.
meeting with senior students the first month of school to answer
questions about the application process.
Elizabeth Carlson, our Social Services Director, will be providing
group sessions for transfer students to ensure a smooth transition.
She will assist them in selecting clubs or activities to join so they
get connected to our school. Mrs. Carlson is also planning our
Red Ribbon Week and organizing Sigma Alpha Delta.
As our school continues to be innovative with the new computer
tablets, counselors will be working with students to use the tablets
to manage their course loads by entering their four year plans
on the Naviance website. We are excited about the new school
innovations and we look forward
to assisting students in finding
new ways to use their new
instructional tools!
Counselors are currently meeting with seniors, assisting
them in using the software “Naviance” for their college
searches, monitoring their college applications and teacher
recommendations. Seniors may bring their tablets and log onto
Naviance to work with counselors on their college applications.
Carrie Egan, our College and Career Coordinator, has begun
hosting senior application meetings. Seniors struggling with
completing their application attended one of the senior application
completion nights. In addition, individual counselors will be
New Faces of Carmel Catholic High School
On August 16, 2012 Carmel Catholic High School officially
welcomed the Class of 2016. Over 360 new faces walked through
the many entrances of our high school, anxiously awaiting the
start of their Carmel Catholic experience. Students from over 65
different grade schools were beginning their academic journey
together. Although this was the first time this class came together
in a formal academic setting, these students were already familiar
with one another, with over 97% of the incoming Freshmen Class
participating in the Freshmen Experience.
The Freshmen Experience is a one-day retreat that serves as a
social catalyst, where the freshmen come together to participate
in team building and icebreaking activities led by a retreat group
from LaSalle Manor, in Plano, Illinois and a group of dedicated
Carmel Catholic upper-class students who acted as peer leaders.
Some activities are active and others are thought provoking, and
participation in these activities allows students the opportunity to
branch out and meet other students in their class. The Freshmen
Experience is geared towards fostering new friendships within the
freshmen class while strengthening existing ones.
For the third consecutive year, the Freshmen Experience took place
on the campus of Carmel Catholic and was very successful. Hosting
the Freshmen Experience on campus gives our Freshmen Class a
unique opportunity to have an organized event on campus prior
to the start of the school year allowing students to become more
familiar with one another while acclimating to the larger campus
(for most). The Experience was held over August 3rd, 6th and 7th.
On August 16, 2012, I expected the halls to be alive with more
excitement than anxiety, and they were. These students reaffirmed
my belief that we are very fortunate to have them join the Carmel
Catholic family! Their energetic and accepting nature has been on
display from day one and are certainly hallmarks of this class.
I am very proud to welcome the Class of 2016!
Dramatic Arts
The Dramatic Arts Fall play, Loving Lives, under the direction of
Mrs. Denise Sebastiano, has been cast and begun rehearsing.
It’s 1948, in the dead of winter and it’s time for ‘Loving Lives’, a
radio soap opera which is on its last legs. The show is written and
sponsored by the Nightengale Soap Company. The setting for the
once great running radio show is now in an old run down theatre
building. As the story unfolds, you see how each character adds
their own unique talents and personality in making the story come
alive and how each person has contributed to the hilarious demise
of the radio show.
A Carmel Tradition For 39 Years—
Street Scenes Ad Drive Underway—Volunteers Needed For Collection Days
Carmel Catholic High School’s
Street Scenes Ad Drive began
Thursday, August 30th and
extends through Friday, October
5th. This important fundraiser
supports Carmel’s annual
operating budget—providing
funds to meet normal operating
expenses. Funds raised help to
keep Carmel’s tuition lower than
any other Catholic high schools
in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
As outlined in the Student Handbook, each student is required to
raise a minimum of $150 in the Street Scenes Ad Drive. Possible
ways to fulfill this quota include: selling ads, selling admission
tickets, and/or making a donation to the school. Extra ad drive
order forms and admission ticket forms are available in the
Business Office and Attendance Office. Students who do not
bring in the mandatory amount of $150, will have their tuition
account billed during the fall semester.
There are many ways to help your student or his/her class
become the big winner this year:
1. Sell tickets to your family, neighbors and friends; or buy
tickets for yourself. Why not give tickets as a gift to your
secretary, boss or co-worker for Christmas Tickets are mailed
in the middle of January to the address on the ticket form,
so please print legibly. In the meantime, you can give a ‘gift
certificate’ or ‘IOU’.
2. Sell ad space to businesses, colleges, churches,
organizations, etc; or place a personal ad for your family.
All ads are placed in the comprehensive and professionally
produced 400-page advertising directory—given to every Street
Scenes guest!
3. You receive free tickets with each ad purchase.
4. Make a tax-deductible donation. Please ask your employer
for a Matching Gift Fund form.
Volunteers Needed!
We are in need of volunteers, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the
Street Scenes Ad Drive Collection days; September 5th, 10th,
18th, 24th, 27th, Oct 2nd and 5th. Please call Mrs. Collette at
847-388-3377 if you can provide assistance any or all of these
days.
Thank you very much for encouraging your student to do his/
her part for this important Carmel fundraiser.
Strategic Planning Process Completed
At the June 7, 2012 meeting of the joint boards the results of the
strategic planning process were unanimously affirmed. The 2012-
2017 plan articulates issues surfaced by the four focus groups.
Special thanks to all of those who participated in the process!
Catholic Identity and Mission
1. That Carmel Catholic High School promotes an academic
environment where students question, understand, and
develop authentic faith encouraging a conversion of heart that
allows them to own and live that faith.
2. That, recognizing parents’ role as the primary faith educators
of their families, Carmel Catholic High School creates
opportunities for their spiritual enrichment in the
Catholic tradition.
3. That Carmel Catholic High School nurtures a more dynamic
and collaborative relationship between the school and the
surrounding parishes and churches to foster ongoing spiritual
growth and active parish participation.
4. That Carmel Catholic High School evaluates and updates the
mission statement of the school.
Curriculum
1. Enhance critical thinking within a rigorous, supportive climate,
which differentiates for individual learning styles and abilities.
2. Implement and evaluate effective technology use to empower
students, teachers, and administrators to expand learning the
learning opportunities at Carmel.
3. Collect academic data from appropriate resources to analyze,
make improvements, and communicate results.
4. Evaluate and update curriculum and educational opportunities
to prepare students for college, career, and life.
Finance and Sustainability
1. Evaluate the anticipated need for financial aid and
scholarship for the next five years and compare to the internal
and external resources available to fund that need; develop
additional funding.
2. Increase investment in marketing/admissions in order to grow
enrollment to reach optimal capacity.
3. Increase investment in alumni and community outreach to
substantially grow the endowment and annual fund.
4. Increase and promote the summer program offerings to
prospective students to strengthen exposure in all areas –
athletics, fine arts, academics.
Organizational Processes
1. Implement a centralized, electronic communications
system that is accessible and customizable by internal and
external stakeholders.
2. Develop a facilities planning tool for reserving all physical
spaces on campus.
3. Re-evaluate outdoor space and remedy traffic flow throughout
campus to accommodate growth and all users.
Notification Concerning Asbestos Content and Management Plan for
Carmel Catholic High School
In 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency
Response Act (AHERA). That law requires all schools,
kindergarten through twelfth grade, to be inspected to identify
any asbestos-containing building materials. The law further
requires the development of a Management Plan, based upon the
findings of the inspection, which outlines our intent in controlling
the potential for exposure to asbestos fibers in our school.
In the past, asbestos was used extensively in building materials
because of its insulating and fire retarding capabilities. Virtually
any building built before the late 1970’s contains at least some
asbestos in pipe insulation and structural fireproofing. We, too,
have buildings that contain asbestos materials. The primary
concern arises when these materials begin to deteriorate or
become damaged.
The inspection of this school is complete and some asbestoscontaining
materials were identified in the building. The
materials are distributed in various locations and include pipe
insulations and mechanical areas not readily accessible to
building occupants or students.
The Inspection Report and Management Plan outlines in detail
the methods we will use to maintain the materials in a safe
manner. Carmel has had, or is in the process of having, people
properly trained to successfully administer this program.
Every three years the asbestos in this school is required to be
re-inspected. The re-inspection report notes any changes in the
condition of the asbestos since the previous report. The last
three-year inspection was conducted at this school in December
of 2011 and has been added to the management plan. This past
summer, asbestos removal was performed in the student lounge,
library and monastery. A copy of the three-year inspection report
and the management plan is on file at Carmel Catholic High
School in the Academic Office for your review if you so desire.
