Welcome Address 

Dear Colleagues 

The subspeciality of cardiac electrophysiology and pacing in 

Egypt continues to attract increasing numbers of young investigators. 

Today, cardiac pacing and interventional electrophysiologic procedures 

are being practiced in over 10 university and academic hospitals as 

well as in public health, military and non academic private hospitals. 

Starting by a small working group in the eighties, Egyptian 

pioneers of cardiac pacing and electrophysiology pursued the hard 

task of promoting the specialty and encouraging practicing 

cardiologists and critical care physicians to go into the field rewarded 

only by scientific achievements and mastering skills of the expanding 

advances in ablation. 

Today, we are announcing the 8 th international meeting of the 

Egyptian Cardiac Rhythm Association (ECRA) to be held in Cairo. With 

its 15 guest speakers, we are hoping to make it a spectacular event. 

You are invited to attend this meeting which comprises plenary 

sessions, minicourse, lectures and satellite symposia on both 

diagnostic techniques as well as interventional and device therapy in 

tachy and brady arrhythmias, besides interactive and case scenario 

sessions.

Nabil El-Sherif (United States of America) 

Graduated from Cairo University School of Medicine in 1960, 

received post graduate training at Cairo University Hospitals and 

Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida. In 1978 he 

became a Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the State 

University of New York (SUNY), Downstate Medical Center and in 

1984 became the director of the Cardiology division at 

Downstate. He is currently the director of the Cardiology Division 

at the New York Harbor Veterans Affairs Health Care Center, 

Brooklyn campus. Dr. El-Sherif is an internationally recognized authority in Cardiac 

Electrophysiology. He is a member of several National and International medical societies 

and serves on the editorial board of several journals. His research has been consistently 

supported by federal and non-federal grants for the last 35 years and has dealt with the 

link between molecular biology, ion channel physiology, cellular electrophysiology and 

clinical presentations of cardiac arrhythmias. He has published over 500 peer reviewed 

manuscripts, reviews, and book chapters and has edited 8 books in the field of cardiac 

arrhythmias. He has received several honorary awards including the 2007 Outstanding 

Achievement Award from the European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society (ECAS) and the 2010 

Pioneer of Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology from the Heart Rhythm Society. 

Ricardo Cappato (Italy) 

Consultant in the Cardiology Department, Ospedale Civile, Cento 

(Ferrara), Italy. Member of the National Association of Hospital 

Cardiologists since April 1995. Member of the Scientific Program 

Organizing Committee of the European Society of Cardiology 

Working Group on Arrhythmias. Member of the Italian 

Arrhythmology and Clinical Pacing Association. Director, Center of Clinical Arrhythmia and 

Electrophysiology, Policlinico S. Donato, S. Donato Milanese, Milan, Italy. Co. Director of 

"Centro di Aritmologia delle Cliniche Casa di Cura Privata Clinica San Rocco di Franciacorta, 

Ome (Brescia) and Casa di Cura S. Anna, Brescia. Member of the Sudden Death Task 

Force, European Society of Cardiology. Creator and Coordinator of the BEDS Study

Sabine Ernst (United Kingdom) 

Honorary senior lecturer Lead for electrophysiology research 

Her clinical expertise is mostly focused on catheter ablation of 

complex arrhythmias with a special emphasis on atrial 

fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. 

Before joining Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation 

Trust, Dr Ernst was director of the magnetic navigation laboratory in Hamburg, Germany, 

where she and her team performed pioneering work developing this new technology. 

Dr Ernst is also a member of the educational board of the European Heart Rhythm 

Association (EHRA) and is the course director for the European teaching course for EP. She 

is a member of the EP guideline committee of the German Cardiac Society. She is on the 

editorial board of the Journal of Interventional Cardiovascular Electrophysiology. Dr Ernst 

has been a co-author of several cardiology and EP books. Most importantly, she 

contributed the chapter on “Catheter ablation of accessory pathways” in the Zipes´ EP 

textbook.
