Activities Week
Newsteam
On the Thursday of Activities
Week a group of
students formed to act
as journalists for the
day. All of the stories
and photographs that
follow are the work of
this group of students.
Activities Week
Activities week aims to
provide a fun and enjoyable
week for all the students
but also plays a major
role in the curriculum .
Activities such as emergency
services day aim to
open students eyes to the
real world and is a handson
approach to learning.
Another major part of activities
week, includes
learning about careers and
the world of work. This is
something that all year
groups take part in. Year 7
go to work with one of
their parents
for the day,
similarly,
Year 9 go job
shadowing for
a day with
someone
other than
their parents.
Year 8’s
spend a day
playing ‘the
real game’
which involves
a quiz
about the
world of work and an exercise
in which they are
given their own ‘career’
and try to manage their
own funds etc. Year 10’s
on the other hand spent
two weeks previously doing
work experience.
There are a number of difficulties
in organising an
event such as this. Arrangements
have to be
made to get in outside
speakers and to book activities
outside of school
such as water-sports at
Hengistbury Head.
Many activities are arranged
by members of
staff and much of the planning
starts in
January!
All the
faculties
have providedactivities
for students.Languages
organized
a Year 7
trip to
France, PE has put on an
alternative sports day for
Year 10, English and
maths have provided activities
for Year 7’s, Technology
have organized
bridge building, textiles,
Remote control car activities
among other things,
Art has put on sculpting
and flag making, Expressive
Arts has organized
dance, drama and music
days for Year 9 and science
have put on a trip for
Year 8’s and robotics
among other things.
Report by Dan Davies
Year 7’s Activities Week
The Year 7’s first Activities
Week has been eventful
and exciting. The year
group had their first taste
of the world of work in the
form of ‘Take your child to
work day’, followed by a
day learning about various
Emergency Services. After
that was a day trip to Boulogne
in France, and after
a later start than usual to
the day, English and Maths
activities were scheduled
for the next day.
‘Take your child to work
day’ is a valuable part of
the school’s careers program,
giving students their
first insights to the work-
