128 "'" HISTORIA "'" propios términos. No hay otra manera, no po<strong>de</strong>mos salir <strong>de</strong>l círculo virtuoso <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> interpretación. El mo<strong>de</strong>lo tradicional <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> verdad como correspon<strong>de</strong>ncia suponía <strong>la</strong> contrastación imparcial <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s afirmaciones con respecto a los hechos, y <strong>la</strong> suposición <strong>de</strong> que una vez alcanzada <strong>la</strong> verdad, <strong>la</strong> crítica cesa. 1bdas <strong>la</strong>s concepciones contemporáneas <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> verdad sostienen que el conocimiento es un proceso, no un estado, y por ello <strong>la</strong> crítica es su elemento permanente. La analogía entre el <strong>de</strong>sarrollo <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s ciencias naturales y <strong>la</strong>s humanida<strong>de</strong>s levantaba <strong>la</strong> sospecha sobre éstas en tanto que parece que nunca existen acuerdos, que todo se discute y se critica, como si en <strong>la</strong>s ciencias naturales eso ya no existiese. Esa imagen errónea, pero muy difundida, <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> ciencia parecía inhabilitar los esfuerzos <strong>de</strong> investigación en <strong>la</strong>s disciplinas don<strong>de</strong> eso no ocurre. Y si efectivamente eso no ocurrirá, tampoco significa que no se alcancen conocimientos. El conocimiento como un proceso requiere <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> crítica. En cambio, don<strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> crítica cesa, sólo existe <strong>la</strong> opinión. Gadamer sostiene que <strong>la</strong> "Opinión es lo que reprime el preguntar. Le es inherente [a <strong>la</strong> opinión] una particu<strong>la</strong>r ten<strong>de</strong>ncia expansionista; quisiera ser siempre opinión general, y <strong>la</strong> pa<strong>la</strong>bra que entre los griegos <strong>de</strong>signaba a <strong>la</strong> opinión, doxa, significa al mismo tiempo <strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong>cisión alcanzada por <strong>la</strong> mayoría en <strong>la</strong> reunión <strong>de</strong>l consejo".l La hermenéutica no es pues el reino <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> opinión, el espacio don<strong>de</strong> todo se vale, pues todo <strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> interpretaciones. La hermenéutica constituye una actividad reflexiva que crea conocimientos. Preguntar y respon<strong>de</strong>r son activida<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong> diálogo, <strong>de</strong> comunicación, que obviamente se enfrentan a dificulta<strong>de</strong>s que en principio, pue<strong>de</strong>n superarse. Así, <strong>la</strong>s interpretaciones se someten a <strong>la</strong> crítica especializada. El diálogo entre <strong>la</strong> diferencia y lo mismo es permanente. El conocido dilema expuesto en el Menón, <strong>de</strong> P<strong>la</strong>tón, y analizado por Gadamer en Verdad y método, según el cual, cómo po<strong>de</strong>mos conocer lo que ignoramos si no lo conocemos y si ya lo conocemos para qué lo buscamos, ilustra esa ten<strong>de</strong>ncia aproximativa <strong>de</strong>l conocimiento, lo <strong>de</strong>sconocido se <strong>de</strong>ve<strong>la</strong> mediante <strong>la</strong> analogía <strong>de</strong>l como sí (<strong>de</strong>l als Ob <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> poesía y <strong>la</strong> filosofía). En fin, consi<strong>de</strong>ro que el supuesto ontológico <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> hermenéutica es el <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> permanencia <strong>de</strong>l sentido. Evi<strong>de</strong>ntemente existen grados, obras con un enorme contenido simbólico, otras con menos y algunas hay que interrogar<strong>la</strong>s <strong>de</strong> manera peculiar para <strong>de</strong>scubrir su sentido; por ejemplo, los estudios sobre aspectos <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> vida cotidiana han requerido <strong>de</strong> nuevas perspectivas en su análisis, a partir <strong>de</strong> series documentales que son básica- 1 H.-G. Al parecer, todas nuestras activida<strong>de</strong>s están dispuestas <strong>de</strong> modo tal que siempre gotean significaciones. Así pues, no sólo el arte, <strong>la</strong> política, <strong>la</strong> ciencia, <strong>la</strong> filosofia y <strong>la</strong> religión crean sentidos, sino que también 10 hacen <strong>la</strong>s activida<strong>de</strong>s más insignificantes <strong>de</strong> nuestra existencia. La permanencia <strong>de</strong>l sentido se manifiesta, repito, en <strong>la</strong>s diferencias, cuando una diferencia carece <strong>de</strong> significado simplemente no existe.
