Roland Bar, More than a Century
of Characters and Stories...
El origen de este
antiguo y famoso bar
se remonta a los
inicios del siglo
pasado, por allá por
1901, cuando fue
creado por un marino
alemán en el "Barrio
Chino" del puerto,
específicamente en la
calle Bustamante
N°49, siendo
bautizado con ese
nombre en honor al
monumento del
gigante "ROLAND", el
cual forma parte de la
historia medieval de la
ciudad alemana de
Bremen.
The origin of this old
and famous bar goes
back to the beginning
of last century,
around 1901, when it
was created by a
German sailor in the
port´s “Chinese
Neighborhood,”
specifically on
Bustamante 49. It
received that name to
honor the monument
of the grand
“ROLAND” who is
part of the medieval
history of the German
city of Bremen.

Sdel tiempo, viviendo su
mejor época a mediados
de siglo con los hermanos
Papic, de origen yugoslavo
como propietarios, siendo
Esteban el más popular, quien
cambio las salitreras del norte
por este rincón bohemio.
Por estos años comenzaron a
contarse las más diversas
leyendas de intriga y misterio;
por ejemplo, se dice que para
la Segunda Guerra Mundial
fue un centro de espionaje
pro nazi, donde algunas
mujeres de la alta sociedad
seducían a ciertos hombres
para obtener valiosas
informaciones. También se
dice que fue un centro de la
"Mafia Porteña" y por eso que
los baños de los hombres
tenían unas ranuras a la altura
de los ojos, para ver quien
entraba después, por si fuera
necesario protegerse de una
"Vendetta”.

best era in the midst of the
century with the Papic
brothers who were the
Yugoslavian owners, among
them the most popular one
being Esteban, who traded the
nitrate fields of northern Chile
for this bohemian corner.
Around this time, the most
diverse, intriguing and
mysterious legends began to
be told. For example, they say
that for the Second World
War, it was a pro-Nazi spy
center, where some high
society women seduced certain
men in order to obtain
valuable information. They
also say that it was a center
for the “Port Mafia” and that´s
why the men´s bathroom had
some openings at eye level, in
order to see who entered
afterwards and in case it
became necessary to protect
oneself from a “Vendetta.”
