FIVEONFIVEDOCUMENTARIESRUMOS ITAÚ CULTURAL CINEMA AND VIDEO 2006-2007Fade in. In the interweaving of the electronic flow,an image appears. A face, a landscape and a storyto be told. People, geographies, asphalt, land, andthe horizon of a place. In the search for the idealcharacter and the plans that are best identified withthe proposed idea, in fast forward, the adventureof representing reality through a documentary isonce again undertaken by the producers awardedby the Rumos Cinema and Video 2006-2007. In thefilms by Miriam Chnaiderman, Andre Costa, CamiloCavalcante and Claudio Assis, Maya Da-Rin andPaula Gaitán, memories, the city, childhood, Amazonborders and migrations in kaleidoscope-like imagesof Brazilian contemporaneity. In this edition, a specialprize has been awarded to the Diário de Sintraproject, produced by Paula Gaitán. This documentaryis structured upon personal aspects of the everydaylife of filmmaker Glauber Rocha in the Portuguesecity where he lived with his wife, Paula Gaitán, andhis two children Eryk Rocha and Ava Rocha in 1981,some time before his death.The proposal of the 5th edition of the program,which is extended and has greater financial support,highlighted Rumos Cinema and Video as the mostimportant program to support documentaryproductions, developed by a cultural institute withnational coverage. Besides the first goal of this project,that is, to enable the production and finalization ofthe films, all of the processes of releasing, marketing,analysis and development of the program fosterdiscussion and allow for the creation of a networkconnecting the interested audience, producers,researchers and movie directors, thus promotingand giving incentive to reflect on Braziliandocumentaries and the context of their productionin the contemporary scenario.With the participation of a selection committeewhich is more integrated to the program releaseand marketing process, the scope of the projecthas been extended and the action plan has beendiversified. Liliana Sulzbach, Paschoal Samora andLuís Eduardo Jorge joined Rumos Cinema andVideo’s coordination staff in a journey across 13cities where meetings, lectures and festivals wereheld to inform and discuss the project with theinterested audience. This group was joined by moviedirectors and researchers Cláudia Mesquita, CaoGuimarães, Érika Bauer, Francisco Elinaldo Teixeira,Sheila Schvarzman, José Carlos Avellar, ConsueloLins and Carlos Nader, distinguished partners in theprocess of reflecting upon and understanding thescenario of documentary productions nationwide.The result of this process is included in the SobreFazer Documentários (On Making Documentaries)edition, which presents critical essays on thecountry’s documentary production context.
