Autism is not a tragedy, ignorance is the tragedy!
¡El Autismo no es una tragedia,
la ignorancia es la tragedia
Las Caras
del Autismo
Por David Triana
El Autismo no discrimina entre razas,
etnias, nivel social o educacional.
roja, etc. Desde que entre “en el
mundo de Autismo y me involucre
con organizaciones relacionadas, he
conocido a Latinos, Anglos, Musulmanes,
familias afectados.
The Faces of
Autism
Por David Triana
Autism does not discriminate based
on race, ethnicity, nor on social or
educational status. The “Faces of Autism”
are white, brown, black, yellow, red, etc.
Since I first entered the “world of Autism”
and involved in related organizations, I
have met Hispanics, Caucasians, Muslims,
Catholics, Protestants, girls/boys, adults,
rich ones, middle class ones, poor ones…
all kinds of people affected by it.
The statistics are incredible...1 in 69
children are diagnosed with Autism.
That means that we currently have 1 to
1.2 million individuals under the age of
21 in the United States who have been
diagnosed with Autism!
April is “Autism Awareness Month”. But,
what is Autism? To better explain it, it is
sometimes easier to start by saying “what
Autism IS NOT!”
We hope everyone is
doing great! I recently
went and watched an
outstanding movie.
It is called “Miracles
from Heaven” and it
start Jennifer Garner
and a wonderful
cast that includes
Eugenio Derbez. It is a
beautiful movie based
on the true story of
a little girl from Texas who was miraculously
healed of a deadly condition she had with her
intestines. Eugenio Derbez did a great job as
the Mexican physician who was treating the
young girl. Eugenio is a multi-talented actor,
producer and director who many have seen
in the movie “Instructions Not Included.” That
movie broke records a couple of years ago for
Hispanic films released nation-wide within the
United States. I highly recommend everyone
goes and watches “Miracles from Heaven.” It is
just a great movie that I know will touch you.
This month, Conexión Media Group, in
partnership with the Big Bend Minority
Chamber of Commerce (BBMC) will host a free
½ day seminar in Tallahassee titled “Connecting
with the Hispanic Market.” It will take place on
April 28th at Good Shepherd Catholic Church
in Tallahassee. I take this opportunity to thank
Gina Kinchlow of the BBMC for her support. We
also thank Dr. Sindy Chapa and attorneys Gisela
Rodriguez and Aisha Chaney for being a direct
part of it via their presentations. See the related
ad in this edition and also look for it in Facebook
and other social media outlets. We have sent
information to Tallahassee newspapers and
websites to promote it. We have given similar
había dado muerte accidental a cuatro personas
seminars to members of the Greater Fort
Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce and we
hope to take them throughout the area this
year and next.
Our region’s Hispanic community continues to
grow and we want to make sure people know
about the positive impact of that growth. We
want to play a positive role in the growth that
will continue in our North, NW Florida and SE
Alabama areas.
Also within this edition, there is an advertisement
for United for a Good Cause’s 3rd Annual
Leadership Conference, which will be held on
April 23rd in Fort Walton Beach. We hope that
ALL parents who may be reading this and have
kids in 8th – 12th grades and live in the vicinity
of Fort Walton Beach will register their kids to
attend. It will be a great conference. See the ad
in this edition and also look for info in Facebook.
Cinco de Mayo will arrive before our next
edition comes out! As you will see throughout
this edition, several of our advertisers are having
specials on that day at their restaurants. We
hope you will take advantage of those great
specials and go out and have a good time
while you support those that help make this
newspaper possible. We would not be able to
publish Conexión without the advertisers! We
welcome several new clients in this edition,
including Pappadakis from Quincy. Pappadakis
has some great vehicles in their ad and in their
website!
Do not forget amigos! Mother’s Day is right
around the corner! Until next time. May God
bless everyone and we thank you for reading
No debe haber exclusión
LINDAS CONFESIONES
Por Linda Del Grego - En Facebook y @Lindacarreno en twitter
A tener un macho en casa
En este mes de abril
quiero invitarlos a
9. Él Nunca te guarda rencor, aunque lo
reprendas y humilles delante de toda la
familia.
animalito, macho o hembra, gato, perro
o caballo, bien llamados mascotas.
Desafortunadamente todavía vemos
animales que no cuentan con una familia
que los respete o los quiera. Algunos
animalito. En este mes celebro con
los míos haber conocido a través de
ellos el amor eterno e incondicional.
Un lambetazo gigante para todos de
nuestra parte.
Babushka goes to Hispanicize 2016
By Bohemian Babushka
HolaHolaHola Beautifuls! By the time
you read this, Babushka would have
attended her fifth Hispanicize. Five
times? Is an event really worth going
that many times? JU SO FONII!!! Not
only is it worth attending, it’s become
a pilgrimage of sorts for many of us in
social media and other arenas because
it gets bigger and better every year.
“#Hispz16 is the iconic, largest annual
event for Latino trendsetters and
newsmakers in digital content creation,
journalism, marketing, entertainment
and tech entrepreneurship. The
Hispanicize event is a launch pad for
creative endeavors, new products,
technologies, marketing campaigns,
films, books and more targeting
Latinos in the U.S. and/or Puerto Rico.”
And founder/organizer Manny Ruiz
promises “this year Hispanicize will be
more than just an event; we want to
make sure we make a great difference
for our Latino community.”
One of the differences will be sponsoring
the launch of @TheLSBProject, a social
good effort for those living with Spina
Bifida. “Spina bifida is a congenital
birth condition that affects the
spine. The spine is left undeveloped,
unclosed, with nerves exposed. While
this is corrected surgically upon birth,
secondary permanent effects can
include paralysis, hydrocephalus (water
on the brain), bladder and bowel
incontinence, as well as other issues.
There are as many as 166,000 people
living with spina bifida in the country.
According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, Latinos have
the highest incidence of spina bifida
of all ethnicities.” The nonprofit is led
by BB’s querida amiga, Laurita Tellado
who was born with Spina Bifida and
knows first-hand the frustrations and
limitations experienced because of
the disease. The website to learn
more about the project, visit www.
lauritaspinabifidaproject.org
Hispanicize is about advancement,
collaboration, and celebration of our
Latino community in all aspects del
mundo y en todo el mundo. Porque
honestly beautifuls, who better than
nosotros to do it? Next month more
Big Bend Minority
Chamber of Commerce
About the Big Bend Minority Chamber of Commerce
By Gina L. Kinchlow, MBA
Sean Pittman, BBMC Founder
The Big Bend Minority Chamber of
Commerce was organized in November
of 2012 in response to the looming gap
in economic opportunities for minorityowned
and woman-owned businesses
in Tallahassee and the four contiguous
counties. These businesses are largely
un-networked, lacking in reliable
advocacy, and in dire need of assistance
that will connect them to wealthbuilding
opportunities. With a mission
to stimulate grassroots economic growth
and development for minority and
women business enterprises, the BBMC
has designed a three-point strategy that
collectively addresses key areas of need.
ADVOCACY: BBMC leaders speak on
behalf of the membership on city, county,
state and national levels. They do this
by serving on key decision-making
committees that impact the business
community. They maintain a presence
and influence on Florida’s legislative
community and support political leaders
whose platforms address the concerns
of minority and women business
enterprises. By participating in activities
that provide a platform for the BBMC
message to be heard, this opens doors of
opportunity for BBMC members.
EDUCATION & INFORMATION: Research
shows that successful business
owners strategically stay connected to
knowledge sources and information
that make it possible for them to run
up-to-date enterprises. The BBMC
provides it members with a year-round
menu of industry-specific guest lectures,
workshops, symposia, networking
exchanges, online resources, and a library
of data and information that addresses
all aspects of business ownership.
Additionally, members gather on a
regular basis to share ideas and showcase
their goods and services.
NETWORK INTEGRATION & SUPPORT:
Capital and connections. The BBMC
understands these are two items at the
top of the list of needs for most minority
and women business owners. Through
our partnerships with banks, credit
unions, and financial support institutions,
we are able to successfully direct our
members to varying ranges of capital
from short-term, microloans to funding
for major capital projects. Hand-in-hand
with the capital is the pressing need to
connect to business opportunities in
both the public and private sectors where
minority business owners and women
business owners can compete on a level
playing field. The BBMC aggressively
seeks to ‘match’ its members to lucrative,
wealth-building job contracts through
matchmaking activities.
Autismo cont.
Las estadísticas son increíbles...1 en
cada 68 niños son diagnosticados con
Autismo.
• Risa y sonrisa inapropiadas
• Ningún temor real a los peligros
• Poco o ningún contacto visual
• Aparente insensibilidad al dolor
• Ecolalia (repetición de palabras y frases
en vez de un lenguaje normal)
• Prefiere estar solo; posee una manera
reservada
• Demasiada o poca actividad física que
se manifiesta en lo extremo
• Las rabietas; exhibe angustia sin
ninguna razón aparente
• No responde a indicaciones verbales;
actúa como si fuera sordo
• Apego inapropiado a objetos
• Dificultad en expresar sus necesidades;
emplean los gestos o señalan a los
objetos en ve z de usar palabras.
occurs in both boys and girls.
Individuals with Autism generally exhibit
at least half of the characteristics within
the following list and the symptoms can
vary from mild to severe and may vary in
intensity:
• Difficulty in socializing with other
children
• Insisting in sameness and resistance to
change
• Smiles or laughs at inappropriate
times
• Has no real fear to dangers
instead of having normal language)
• Prefers to be alone, possesses a
La pereza es hoy
en día uno de
los enemigos
más difíciles en
la vida de un estudiante, la constante
demanda de elevación de nivel de
vida y los numerosos cambios en las
circunstancias del medio en el cual va
formando su carácter, logran la fórmula
perfecta para crear un ambiente de ocio.
El perezoso sufre tremendamente, hace
su trabajo con desgana y además, se
aburre en su tiempo libre. Todo le cansa,
todo le aburre, le resulta muy difícil
cualquier esfuerzo.
Estados Unidos y tienen DACA. Me gustaría
P: Me hice ciudadana mientras mi hija era
Usted no
Swimmer’s Ear
By Marcos Otero / Gulf Coast Immediate Care Center,
Fort Walton Beach, FL
Spring is here and everyone enjoys
going to the beach or the pool. The
fun can quickly turn painful because
of a swimmer’s ear. When your ear is
exposed to excess moisture, water can
remain trapped in your ear canal. The
skin inside becomes soggy, diluting the
acidity that normally prevents infection.
A cut in the lining of the ear canal also
can allow bacteria to penetrate the
skin. When this happens, bacteria and
Symptoms of swimmer’s ear usually
appear within a few days of exposure to
contaminated water, and may include:
severe pain on moving your outer, pain
¡Paella, Por Favor!
debe quedar crujiente y tostado
Paella, Please!
By Juan Ten / Real Paella Catering / www.realpaella.com
Paella is a traditional rice dish from
Valencia cooked and served in a
large, shallow pan. This colorful dish
is composed of a wide variety of
ingredients, but Valencian rice, olive oil,
and saffron are essential to the recipe.
Rice has been a Valencian staple since the
16th century, and was frequently baked
in clay pots. It was not until the midnineteenth
century that modern paella
was created in an area around Albufera
(a bay south of Valencia), although there
is evidence of the dish being present
since the 18th century.
“La Paella” is the cooking pan,
traditionally and preferably made of iron.
The pan is circular and shallow with two
round handles on opposite sides with
a reasonably thick, flat base. Linguists
believe that the word paella comes from
the name of the pan in which it is made
in. The word itself is derived from the
Latin term patella: a flat plate on which
offerings were made to the Gods.
The peasants of Valencia would use
the paella pan to cook rice with readily
available ingredients such as snails and
vegetables. Rabbit and chicken were
sometimes added for special occasions.
At lunch time, workers in the fields
would gather around a citrus wood fire
were the meal was cooked using this flat
pan.
with wooden spoons. Large paellas are
usually cooked on a bonfire.
Valencian Paella is the most authentic
paella cooked in Valencia. There are
nine ingredients that must be used to
prepare it: olive oil, saffron, Valencian
rice, fresh rabbit and chicken, and
fresh vegetables: garrofó (lima beans),
tavella, ferraúra (wide green beans) and
tomatoes. Traditional paella has a crispy,
caramelized bottom (called socarrat in
Valencian) that is considered a delicacy.
Another typical type of paella in Valencia
is the seafood paella. It is made with fresh
seafood from the Mediterranean Sea.
Paella is now becoming an international
dish and is growing in popularity among
Americans.
Real Paella is a unique catering company
that brings authentic paella to North
Florida. Valencia native, Juan, is the
owner and main chef, and uses his
family recipes to recreate the traditional,
delectable flavors of Spain. Real Paella
is more than a catering company, Real
Paella offers guests a very unique and
entertaining culinary experience with
cooking demonstrations, live flamenco
music, delicious Spanish tapas and of
course, authentic savory paella.
Typically, paella is cooked in Valencia on
Sundays. In many family get-togethers,
the paella is placed in the middle of the
table and is eaten directly from the pan
¿Por qué el marketing
Hispano es único?
Por María Fernanda Bayona - Master in Integrated Marketing Communication
M., & Albert, N., 2011). La población
hispana incrementó significativamente
comparada con el año 2000 en donde
representaban el 13% de la población
total. No resulta sorprendente entonces
cultura, lenguaje y patrimonio.
En palabras de Felipe Korzenny, estos
antecedentes homogéneos han hecho
que el marketing Hispano sea posible,
productivo y lucrativo (Korzenny, F., &
Korzenny, B., 2012). Pero más allá de una
tendencia, el mercado Hispano representa
un gran reto para aquellas compañías que
buscan consumidores multiculturales. En
relación con los beneficios de marketing
Hispano, las cifras muestran que a mayor
número de personas, mayor es el poder
de compra que representan. El Selling
Center for Economic Growth determinó
F., & Korzenny, B., 2012). A mayor
What make Hispanics
uniquely targetable?
By María Fernanda Bayona - Master in Integrated Marketing Communication
mbayona9.wix.com/mariabayona
Without doubt, the U.S. population is
more diverse than ever. A variety of
ethnicities are now into consideration of
marketers and researchers. One of those
groups with a strong presence are the
Hispanics or Latinos. According to the
2010 Census, 308.7 million people reside
in the United States on April 1, 2010, of
which 50.5 million (or 16 percent) were
of Hispanic or Latino origin (Ennis, S.,
Ríos-Vargas, M., & Albert, N.,2011). The
Hispanic population increased from 35.3
million in 2000 when this group made
up 13 percent of the total population. It
is not a surprise that the majority of the
growth in the total population came
from increases in those who reported
their ethnicity as Hispanic or Latino. With
those numbers, marketing to Hispanics
in the U.S. has become more common
because of the sheer size of the market
and its particular characteristics in terms
of culture, language and heritage.
In words of Felipe Korzenny, “this
homogeneity in background has made
Hispanic marketing possible, productive
and lucrative” (Korzenny, F., & Korzenny, B.,
2012). But, more than a trend, targeting
to Hispanics represents a challenge
for marketers seeking multicultural
consumers. Regarding to the advantages
of marketing to Hispanics, results show
that the larger the population the more
purchasing power represents. The Selling
Center for Economic Growth place the
purchasing power of US Hispanic in
2008 at approximately 951 billion dollars
(Korzenny, F., & Korzenny, B.,2012). A
conservative estimate according to
the same source is that by 2013 the
purchasing power of US Hispanics was
1.4 trillion dollars. According to this data,
the Hispanic segment could be very
lucrative for the industry.
However, some marketers unrealistically
have attempted to reach the Hispanic
market as a homogeneous whole and
have failed. This mistake is common
due to the complexity involved in
understanding such a diverse culture.
Hispanics cont.
In words of Muller, while members of
the US Hispanic population understand
themselves to be a part of a common
ethnic group, most have a stronger
identification with their nationality
(Mueller, B., 2008). It is easy to get
lost when targeting to Colombians
compared with Mexicans, because
Hispanic emigrated from diverse reasons,
countries and times. Specific subgroups
based on country of origin can be quite
different.
Evidently, Hispanics represent a unique
target making the implementation
of the cultural perspective worth it in
terms of opening the market to a new
multicultural world. The unique cultural
background of Hispanics consumers
which differentiates them from non-
Hispanic “must be taken into account
in order to gain that confidence and
connection as consumers for the
marketer’s brand” (Korzenny, F., &
Korzenny, B., 2012). The most understood
of these consumers, the stronger the
connection in terms of marketing results,
helping marketers to create useful and
powerful strategies focused on the
Hispanic population. At the end, effective
marketing and advertising to Hispanic
American make sense with a deeper
understanding of heritage, values,
customs and preferences of those who
are valuably different.
Swimmer’s Ear cont.
or lymph nodes in your neck. Feeling of
fullness or stuffiness in your ear. Hearing
loss.
Swimmer’s ear is common in children and
in young adults. You may be at increased
risk of infection if a skin condition such
as eczema causes you to scratch your
ears excessively. Earwax buildup also
may increase your risk by trapping water
in your ear and increasing the likelihood
that you’ll cut the skin while cleaning
your ear.
Make an appointment with your doctor
if you have pain or swelling in your ear or
drainage from your ear. Swimmer’s ear
usually isn’t serious, but complications
can occur if it isn’t treated. Complications
may include: hearing loss and recurrent
outer ear infections (chronic otitis
externa).
The goal of treating swimmer’s ear is to
clear up the infection. Treatment may
include: cleaning, eardrops and or oral
medications.
To avoid swimmer’s ear: dry your ears
thoroughly after exposure to moisture
from swimming or bathing. Never
insert your finger or any other object
into your ear. Avoid swimming in
polluted water. Use earplugs designed
specifically to keep water out of your
ears when swimming. Mix 1 part white
vinegar with 1 part alcohol to make an
effective eardrop to use before and
after swimming. Pour 1 teaspoon of the
solution into each ear and let it drain
back out. This mixture may help prevent
the growth of bacteria and fungi that
can cause swimmer’s ear.
GEORGE GAINER - Candidate for Florida Senate
After selling cars for a few years, in 1968
George decided to buy his own dealership.
That began nearly five decades of
ownership and operations of automotive
dealerships in Florida, Alabama and
Georgia.
It was also in 1968 that George turned
to public service in an effort to give back
to his community. He was elected to the
Bay County Commission at the age of 25,
making George one of the youngest -- if
not the youngest -- elected official in the
state of Florida.
George Gainer is a firm believer in serving
the public. He’s been a Bay County
Commissioner for a total of 18 years and
has helped the county grow and progress.
His dedication to public service is shaped
by his Northwest Florida roots and his
strong belief that hard work, honesty, and
humility define a person’s character.
After more than a decade of service on
the Bay County Commission, George is
running to represent Northwest Florida
in the State Senate. His overall reason is
simple – he cares deeply about this area
and wants to ensure NW Florida receives
the strongest leadership possible for the
state legislature.
Born in Jackson County, the family moved
to Washington County where his father
rented boats and sold bait to people fishing
in the Sandhill Ponds. When the ponds
dried up in 1954, the Gainer family moved
to Bay County settling in Panama City.
George says his family was “poorer than a
drink of water.” Hard work was a must in
order for the family to survive. Everyone in
his family had a job including George, who
at the age of 12 started a newspaper route.
A year later, he went to work as a deckhand
on the fishing boats in St. Andrew. Those
early, formative years taught George a
valuable lesson – that success comes from
the effort you put into it.
George was defeated in his bid for reelection
in 1972 a valuable lesson that has
influenced his decisions to this day. George
focused his efforts on building his business
and his growing family. Today he owns 8
automotive dealerships -- all located in
North Florida. George is most proud of his
family. He is married to Jan Gainer and has
6 children and 12 grandchildren. They are
his pride and joy.
It was thinking about future opportunities
not only for his children and grandchildren,
but for all of Bay County residents that
George decided to run again for the county
commission in 2002. He was elected and
continues to serve. In that capacity, George
has helped lead growth in a fast-changing
county. Commissioner Gainer has voted to
cut taxes while also providing for critical
public safety and transportation needs.
He’s pro-growth while also ensuring Bay
County’s natural resources are protected.
Following the BP oil spill in the Gulf, George
was appointed to the Commission for Oil
Spill Response Coordination and served as
Chairman.
In addition to his responsibilities as a county
commissioner, George serves on various
community boards and organizations. He
is a Mason and a Shriner and has been an
active member of the First Baptist Church
of Panama City since 1954.
LIDERAZGO Y EMPRENDIMIENTO
leadership and entrepreneurship
¡10 pasos para tener éxito
haciendo contactos!
Por Peggy Brockman
6. ¡Sólo sonríe!! A veces olvidamos lo
importante que es eso. La sonrisa es
una de las mejores formas de conectar.
La gente se siente más cómoda en
aproximarse a ti.
7. El conectarte es imprescindible.
Cuando entres en una conversación, haz
preguntas abiertas.
evento?”
UN CONSEJO:
¡DIVIERTETE!! Y recuerda que el
seguimiento es una de las cosas más
importantes en cuanto a tus conexiones.
Cuando uno se conecta con alguien
debes tratar de contactarlos lo más pronto
posible después de conocerles.
10 Steps to Successful Networking!
By Peggy Brockman
1. Know what your goals are when
attending specific networking groups.
Once there you can decide if it is the right
group for you and one you can benefit
from.
2. Visit as many groups as possible that
spark your interest. Notice the tone and
attitude of the group. Do the people
sound supportive of one another? Does
the leadership appear competent? Many
groups will allow you to visit a couple of
times before joining.
3. Arrive early. It will be calmer and
people will not have settled in to groups
yet. You can also position yourself in a
visible area to speak with people you have
planned to connect with.
4. To get referrals, it’s important to have
a clear understanding of and be able to
articulate what you do. You need to also
be clear on why you do it, who you do it
for, and why is it special or different from
others doing the same thing.
5. DO NOT hijack someone’s story! The
most successful networkers are good at
making other people feel important. Look
people in the eye, repeat their name, listen
to what they have to say, and suggest
topics that are easy to discuss. NEVER
discuss politics or religion!
6. Just SMILE!! We sometimes forget how
important this piece is. Smiling is one of
the best ways to connect. It makes people
feel more comfortable approaching you.
7. Connecting is critical. When in a
conversation, ask open-ended questions.
This means questions that ask who, what,
where, when, and how versus those that
can be answered with a simple yes or no.
It opens up the conversation.
8. Become the “go to” person. Once you
become a strong resource, people will
remember to turn to you for suggestions,
ideas, names of other people, etc. This
keeps you visible to them.
9. Have a specific “ask” in mind –
know what you want from your new
connections. When you have a specific
need, it makes you more memorable
as they go through their week and hear
other conversations. The chances of
getting referrals are much higher.
10. Don’t stand around the edges of the
room, waiting for someone to approach
you. To get the conversation started,
simply walk up to a person or a group, and
say, “May I join you” or “What brings you to
this event?”
BONUS TIP:
HAVE FUN!! And remember that FOLLOW-
UP is one of the most important things
you will ever do. When you connect with
someone you want to be in touch right
away.
Conexión Celestial
Celestial Connection
izquierda.
Uno de los Malhechores que estaba
colgado le injuriaba, diciendo: Si tú eres
el Cristo, sálvate a ti mismo y a nosotros.
Respondiendo el otro, le reprendió,
diciendo: ¿ni aun temes tu a Dios,
estando en la misma condenación?,
nosotros a la verdad justamente
padecemos, porque recibimos lo que
merecieron nuestros hechos: más este,
ningún mal hizo. Y dijo a Jesús: Acuérdate
estaba crucificado.
NO VES.
Dios actuara a tu favor.
AMEN
Marcando La Diferencia
Making a Difference
Tenientes Camilo y Mónica Rojas
El teniente Camilo Rojas nació en Bogotá,
Colombia, en 1981. Creció en un ambiente
cristiano rodeado de actividades de la
iglesia, sus padres han sido pastores de
la Iglesia de Dios. A mediados de los
años 90, en Colombia los grupos de la
oposición (guerrilla) emprendieron una
persecución contra los grupos religiosos
que enseñaran (predicaran) en contra
de las actividades que estos grupos
desarrollaban.
vida a servir a Dios.
Durante este tiempo, Camilo empozo a
congregarse en la Iglesia del El Ejército
de Salvación (The Salvation Army) en
Miami FL. En 2008, conoció a su esposa
Mónica.
Lt. Mónica Rojas nació en Bogotá,
Colombia.
Atlanta Georgia). El 7 de Junio de año
pasado, Los tenientes Camilo y Mónica
fueron comisionados como oficiales
del Ejército de Salvación, y asignados
como Oficiales encargados (Pastores/
Administradores) de la operación de El
Ejercito de Salvación para los Condados
Okaloosa and Walton; con sede principal
en la ciudad de Fort Walton Beach,
Florida.
Lieutenants Camilo and Monica Rojas
Lt. Camilo Rojas was born in Bogota,
Colombia in 1981. He grew up in a
Christian environment surrounded
by church activities, his parents have
been pastors form the Church of God
for 40 years. Years later, in the mid-90s,
in Colombia the opposition groups
(guerrillas) determined that Christians
were their enemies.
In 2002, to protect their life from physical
harm, Lt. Camilo and his family had to
leave Colombia to seek political asylum in
the United States. In 2005, their political
asylum case was approved. Through all
this process, God showed Lt. Camilo that
He has great plans for him in this country,
so Lt. Camilo consecrated his life to serve
God.
During this time, Camilo was introduced
into The Salvation Army in Miami FL. In
2008, He met his wife Monica.
Lt. Monica Rojas was born in Bogota,
Colombia. Her family moved to the
Unites States after her father received a
English. The available products will include
greeting cards, ornaments, home décor and
gifts and gift presentation items for both
everyday occasions as well as key seasons
like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and
Christmas.
“We recognize the importance of family,
celebration and optimism in the Hispanic
culture,” said Hallmark multicultural leader
Carlos Ayala. “While the Spanish language
is the primary attribute when it comes
to cultural specificity, the VIDA brand will
deliver distinct product solutions for these
holidays and occasions that showcase the
way Hispanic celebrations are unique and
special.”
Recognizing the importance and symbolism
of mothers and grandmothers in the
Hispanic culture, Hallmark Vida products
will be available in time for Mother’s Day.
VIDA will be found wherever Hallmark
products are sold including Hallmark Gold
Crown stores, mass-channel retailers such as
Walmart, Walgreens and CVS and online at
including in the 17 Spanish-speaking
countries that Hallmark already does
business in, building the foundation for
future opportunities.
field of architecture. When she was 11,
she and her family became Christians,
and since that moment, she has been
involved in different ministries in the
church. Lt. Monica and Camilo have been
first time that she visited The Salvation
Army, she fell deeply in love with all
the work and ministry that involves this
amazing Christian organization.
Lieutenants Rojas received the call to be
officers of The Salvation Army in the year
2012. In 2013 they were accepted into
