Las fibras naturales han sido durante siglos la principal fuente de trabajo en la región de Izalcos.
Desde finales del siglo XIX la producción de petates y cestería proveía el consumo nacional,
luego de un letargo producido por la introducción de materiales sintéticos en el mercado,
organizaciones comunales y culturales de la región han logrado reactivar y modernizar la
artesanía. De la producción mobiliaria y cestera, los artesanos nahuizalqueños saltaron a la
decoración de interiores y los accesorios de vestir. El impacto de la innovación en el diseño
tradicional fortalece las posibilidades de competencia en el mercado local.
The natural fibers have been during centuries the main source of work in the region of Izalcos.
From the end of the XIX century the production of petate bed rolls and basketworks provided
the national consumption, after a lethargy caused by the introduction of synthetic materials in
the market, communal and cultural organizations of the region have managed to reactivate
and to modernize the crafts. From the furniture production and basketwork, the craftpeople from
Nahuizalco leapt into interior decoration and clothing accessories. The impact of the innovation
in the traditional design fortifies the competence possibilities in the local market.
