El cacao es uno de los cultivos históricos de <strong>la</strong> región<br />

centroaméricana. Su presencia ha sido ancestral y ha<br />

diversificado su <strong>con</strong>sumo y comercio en el tiempo. En <strong>la</strong><br />

última década, el cultivo ha regresado a <strong>la</strong> producción<br />

agríco<strong>la</strong> nacional a través de diversas iniciativas y<br />

programas que buscan rescatar <strong>la</strong>s variedades de cacao<br />

e innovar sus formas de cultivo.<br />

Desde <strong>la</strong> bebida sagrada de <strong>la</strong> cultura maya hasta <strong>la</strong><br />

innovación agroecológica, el cacao ha logrado generar<br />

una cultura que busca impactar <strong>la</strong> e<strong>con</strong>omía y <strong>la</strong> ecología.<br />

The cacao is one of the historical crops of the Central America region. Of ancestral presence,<br />

it has diversified its <strong>con</strong>sumption and commerce through time. In the <strong>la</strong>st decade, its culture<br />

has returned to the national agricultural production through diverse initiatives and programs<br />

that aim to rescue the varieties of cacao and to innovate forms of culture.<br />

From the holy drink of the Mayan culture to the agroecology innovation, the cacao has<br />

managed to generate a culture that looks to influence the country's e<strong>con</strong>omy and ecology.<br />

Actualmente, en el país, 3,824 manzanas en 109 municipios están destinadas a su<br />

producción. Se trata de un cultivo generoso, que puede sembrarse en topografías<br />

diversas. Además de su valor nutricional, el bosque de cacao tiene <strong>la</strong> capacidad de<br />

regenerar suelos, mantener los mantos acuíferos y puede combinarse <strong>con</strong> otros cultivos.<br />

At the moment, in the country, 2.695 hectares in 109 municipalities are destined to its<br />

production. It is a generous crop, and can be seeded at on diverse topographies. In<br />

addition to its nutritional value, the cacao forest has the capacity to regenerate the soil, to<br />

maintain the aquifers and to be able to be p<strong>la</strong>nted along with other crops.<br />
