QUERETEANDO
The archaeological zone of “El Cerrito” is the
northernmost ceremonial center of Mesoamerica.
It consists of a Pyramid Base, the Plaza de las Esculturas,
the Plaza de la Danza, the Obsidian Altar
and the Altar of the Skulls, Palace of the Four
Altars.
The Cerrito functioned as “Tollan”, ceremonial and
political center, from which Toltecas, Chichimecas,
Purépechas and Otomíes were recovered.
It is built on 13 levels with slopes of approximately
1.80 to 2.00 meters each, to reach 30 meters. On
its summit was built the Fort, of eclectic architecture,
dating from 1887.
The Site Museum presents the history of the site,
taking as its central axis the Toltec cosmogony,
and is the most important archaeological museum
in the state of Queretaro with an extension of
350 square meters.
The museum allows to understand and interpret
the historical and spiritual strength of this
site. Through four museum sections, it exhibits
around 170 pieces, most of them recovered during
the exploration work at the site. In addition, two
private collections were handed over to INAH for
safekeeping and objects belonging to the Regional
Museum of Queretaro.
