Managing Director’s review
Traffic safety was seen and
heard - several factors
underlying the favourable
development of safety
With regard to Finnish road traffic, 2012 was
the safest year since 1942. Traffic deaths
and injuries decreased compared to previous
years. Furthermore, the number of seriously
injured people decreased considerably.
The favourable trend can be seen in several
areas. The safety of moped drivers and motorcyclists
improved, as did pedestrian safety.
There were also fewer drunk driving-related
accidents than before. The development of
safety is good evidence of the determined and
diverse work carried out by several parties at
the same time, aiming for a common goal.
LIIKENNETURVA succeeded well in its work. We
took part in the planning and implementation
of nationwide traffic safety work. Liikenneturva
has implemented new traffic policy as laid down by
the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
Cooperation with the member organisations
was made a focus area in the action plan. As a
national central organisation, Liikenneturva once
again succeeded in involving parties from several
fields in road traffic safety work. We supported our
members by producing diverse materials and operating
models. The Finnish Parents’ League joined us
at the beginning of the year under review. Liikenneturva
joined the development of the Turvassa
tiellä (“Safely on the road”) road traffic safety campaign
for upper school children headed by the national
motorsport organisation, AK-Motorsport. We
created the Päätä itse (“Decide for yourself”) project
traffic-related projects originating from young people
themselves.
We continued active work in municipalities.
Only five percent of Finns lived in municipalities
where Liikenneturva does not operate at all. Local
work is one of the key tasks of Liikenneturva’s regional
offices. Liikenneturva was a popular partner
for diverse municipal tasks and among various age
groups.
