Abstract
Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira
This publication contains information about the animal disease status of
Finland in 2008. Current information is provided in the publication about the
prevalence of animal diseases in Finland and about the associated surveillance
and monitoringcontrol and surveillance programmes. The publication also
describes action taken to prevent and fight animal diseases.
The animal disease status remained good in Finland also in 2008. The only
controlled, highly contagious animal diseases found in 2008 were Newcastle
disease detected in racing pigeons and viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS)
detected in a few open sea fish farms. Due to the bluetongue infections
reported in Southern Sweden, control activities for bluetongue were
enhanced in the entire country, particularly in Western and Southern Finland.
A bluetongue strategy was also developed with preparations started for
possible bluetongue vaccinations. Other reported animal diseases included
e.g. anthrax found in one bull in the same farm in which the disease occurred
also in 2004, as well as Q fever, which had never before been detected in
Finland.
