Strings attached In the absence of a proper boxing ring, trainee fighters in Kinshasa are tied together with rope to help them overcome their fear of getting physical with an opponent. Discipline is crucial and the young pugilists must train morning and night. On Friday evenings they often participate in matches in the DRC’s only semi-professional ring at Shark Club, a sports centre in central Kinshasa. For a nominal fee ($1/€0,75 for balcony seats and about $25/€19 for ringside seats) spectators can come along and watch. Competitors can win up to $500 (€374), but for the boxers, it’s as much about the taking part as it is the prize money.
