Training stems from our <strong>de</strong>termination to improve the knowledge<br />

and handling of pain, for all medical and paramedical professionals.<br />

Fourth International I.U.D. Conference<br />

The fourth International Conference of the UPSA Pain <strong>Institut</strong>e was held on November 19,<br />

<strong>2004</strong>, in the framework of the third national conference of the “Société d’Étu<strong>de</strong> et <strong>de</strong><br />

Traitement <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> Douleur, in Montpellier. At this time, Dr. Pierre Rainville, of the Montréal<br />

(Canada) medical school’s medical imaging and neurology <strong>de</strong>partment read an original paper<br />

on the theme “The painful experience and its cognitive modu<strong>la</strong>tion: the contribution of<br />

functional cerebral imaging”. This conference will be covered in a special issue of the<br />

I.U.D.’s newsletter in 2005.<br />

ORIGINAL WORKS<br />

• The updating of the “nurse and pain” books, now entitled “Pratique du traitement<br />

<strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>douleur</strong>” (Pain Treatment Practices) to reach a broa<strong>de</strong>r audience,<br />

and “Soins palliatifs en équipe: le rôle infirmier” (Palliative care in a team:<br />

the nurse’s role), began in <strong>2004</strong> for publication in 2005.<br />

• The writing of the book “Les <strong>douleur</strong>s induites” (Induced pains) also began in <strong>2004</strong>.<br />

It will be published in the second quarter of 2005.<br />

THE I.U.D. LETTER<br />

• Letter no. 21: “Third I.U.D. international conference. Visceral pain: From physical<br />

pathology to diagnostics and treatment” by Dr. Maria A<strong>de</strong>le Giamberardino<br />

(Department of aging medicine and sciences, G. d’Annunzio university, Chieti, Italy).<br />

gonarthrosis” by Dr. Bernard Bannwarth (Rhumatology service,<br />

Pellegrin university hospital, and therapeutic <strong>la</strong>boratory, Victor Segalen<br />

university, Bor<strong>de</strong>aux).<br />
