Fourth International I.U.D. Conference
The fourth International Conference of the UPSA Pain Institute was held on November 19,
2004, in the framework of the third national conference of the “Société d’Étude et de
Traitement de la Douleur, in Montpellier. At this time, Dr. Pierre Rainville, of the Montréal
(Canada) medical school’s medical imaging and neurology department read an original paper
on the theme “The painful experience and its cognitive modulation: the contribution of
functional cerebral imaging”. This conference will be covered in a special issue of the
I.U.D.’s newsletter in 2005.

ORIGINAL WORKS
• The updating of the “nurse and pain” books, now entitled “Pratique du traitement
de la douleur” (Pain Treatment Practices) to reach a broader audience,
and “Soins palliatifs en équipe: le rôle infirmier” (Palliative care in a team:
the nurse’s role), began in 2004 for publication in 2005.
• The writing of the book “Les douleurs induites” (Induced pains) also began in 2004.
It will be published in the second quarter of 2005.

• Letter no. 21: “Third I.U.D. international conference. Visceral pain: From physical
pathology to diagnostics and treatment” by Dr. Maria Adele Giamberardino
(Department of aging medicine and sciences, G. d’Annunzio university, Chieti, Italy).

• Letter no. 8: “Daily chronic headaches” by Dr. Michel Lantéri-Minet,
Department of pain evaluation and treatment, Nice university hospital.
• Letter no. 9: “Updated EULAR recommendations on the care of
gonarthrosis” by Dr. Bernard Bannwarth (Rhumatology service,
Pellegrin university hospital, and therapeutic laboratory, Victor Segalen
university, Bordeaux).
