ACTIVITES DU UA/CPI/UA’S/IAPSC’S ACTIVITIESAfrican countries in the activities of the OIE, IPPC andCAC during the formulation of international standardson food safety, animal and plant health.The Beneficiary Countries are ACP member states ofthe African <strong>Union</strong> that are members of the WTO, participatingin the activities of the OIE, IPPC and CAC.It was noted that the workshop was organized in linewith that project and was aimed at bringing countriesto a common position and strengthening their technicalcapacity as regards phytosanitary standards.5. Review of documents and discussion on draftISPMsThere were presentations made on each of the draftISPMs, followed by discussions on the drafts, duringwhich comments, corrections for inclusion on the templateswere made for each draft standard.Participants were invited to take note of the commentscollected at this workshop and use them as they feltappropriate in their preparation of national comments.National comments should be submittedthrough the NPPO contact point to the IPPCSecretariat no later than 30 September 2009 andparticipants were reminded to follow the Instructionsfor the use of the draft stabdards.6. IPPC standard setting work programme andopportunities for participation in the standardsetting processThe IPPC standards setting work program was presentedby Dave Nowel and the list of adopted ISPMstopics for future ISPMs was discussed. Possibilities forinput into the topics and priorities for standardsalready on the work program and for future standardswere outlined.6.1 Suggestions of work programme topicsThe meeting went through discussions for possibletopics to be forwarded to the standard setting committee.The following was brought forth:1. International movement of soil and growing media2. Management and control of pathogens to reducemycotoxin production in crops3. Post harverst treatments for Bactrocera invadens in fruits4. Treatment of Rejected ConsignmentsA number of possible protocols were also brought forwardfor pests management.The following were high-lighted for development ofprotocols :1. Management and control of Cassava viruses2. Management and Control of Red Spider Mitesin crops3. Management and Control of Gray leaf Spots4. Management and control of Larger Grain Borer5. Management and Control of Banana BunchyTop Virus8. Other issuesThree important pieces of information were releasedto participants respectively by Corné Van Alphen fromNetherlands on building process of EU common positionon IPPC , Lucien Kouame on good forest healthpractices in support of international phytosanitarystandards and Jack Suglo on the Green CustomsInitiative.- Building process of EU common position on IPPC :Cooperation and coordination is necessary to preparepositions and statements at IPPC meetings.
