He caught the biathlon bug after watching a shortprogram on the 1998 Olympics. The shooting aspect was of greatinterest. His first experience was on a new pair of skis using a riflethat was too small. Scott <strong>de</strong>scribed the feeling of his first raceakin to having a heart attack! But the experience didn’t scarehim off and he continued with biathlon as his winter sport untilhe heard about the 2003 <strong>Canada</strong> Winter Games. He <strong>de</strong>speratelywanted to make the team so <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d not to return to universitythe following year and train full time instead. His <strong>de</strong>dicationpaid off by finishing third in the 15km Individual and third in therelay. The following year he placed second overall at CanadianChampionships, and was also second in the sprint. Il est <strong>de</strong>venu mordu du biathlon après avoirregardé une courte émission sur le sport lors <strong>de</strong>s Jeux olympiques<strong>de</strong> 1998. Il s’intéressait beaucoup au tir. La première fois où il s’estessayé au sport, il avait <strong>de</strong>s skis tout neufs et une carabine troppetite. Scott dit que sa première épreuve tient beaucoup d’une crisecardiaque! Mais il n’a pas pris peur et il a continué à faire le biathloncomme sport d’hiver jusqu’au moment où il a entendu parler <strong>de</strong>s Jeuxd’hiver du <strong>Canada</strong> 2003. Il tenait vraiment à être membre <strong>de</strong> l’équipealors il a décidé <strong>de</strong> mettre <strong>de</strong> côté ses étu<strong>de</strong>s universitaires ets’entraîner à temps plein. Ce dévouement a porté fruit : il a remporté3e place à l’épreuve individuelle <strong>de</strong> 15 km et 3e place aux relais.L’année suivante, il a fini en 2e place au classement général et 2e ausprint aux épreuves nationales canadiennes. Cela lui a renforcé laconfiance et il a décidé par la suite <strong>de</strong> déménager à Canmore afin <strong>de</strong>s’entraîner à temps plein au Centre nordique <strong>de</strong> Canmore.

A co-worker at the time, who was abiathlete, invited her to come and try it out. She gave it a whirl,fell in love with it immediately and began racing that winter.Following her Gra<strong>de</strong> 12 year, Melanie travelled for a year as partof a <strong>Canada</strong> World Youth exchange program. During this time shereally missed biathlon and <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d to return to post-secondaryeducation at the University of Alberta – Augustana Faculty –where she also participated on the biathlon team. Melanie has aBachelor of Science <strong>de</strong>gree with an Environmental Science majorand Physical Education minor. Un collège àl’époque, qui était biathlète l’a invitée à venir s’y essayer. Elle l’afait, et s’en est éprise tout <strong>de</strong> suite; elle a commencé à concourirce même hiver. Après sa douzième année à l’école, Melanie avoyagé pendant une année dans le cadre <strong>de</strong> l’échange-jeunesseinternational du <strong>Canada</strong>. Pendant ce temps, le biathlon luia manqué et elle a décidé <strong>de</strong> retourner dans un programmed’étu<strong>de</strong>s postsecondaires à l’Université <strong>de</strong> l’Alberta – FacultéAugustana – où elle a également fait partie <strong>de</strong> l’équipe dubiathlon. Melanie a un diplôme ès sciences, avec une majeureen sciences environnementales et une mineure en éducationphysique. En <strong>de</strong>hors <strong>de</strong> l’entraînement et la compétition, elle aimefaire du vélo <strong>de</strong> montagne, essayer <strong>de</strong> nouvelles recettes,et lire les blogues sur la cuisine.
